Rear riser landings, when is too soon?

Three, apparently. "¯"`-._.-¯) ManBird (¯-._.-´"¯" Click -
I must say, that was some serious tri-tip and corn. Thanks again for the hospitality. I should be out there again over Labor Day weekend. "¯"`-._.-¯) ManBird (¯-._.-´"¯" Click

Do a high pull and find out up top. These questions are hard to answer without experience on your canopy at your wingloading and your technique. "¯"`-._.-¯) ManBird (¯-._.-´"¯" Click

Spectre : Is still a useful canopy ?
ManBird replied to nicolesser's topic in Swooping and Canopy Control
Aerodyne's Pilot is a semi-elliptical 9-cell, in the same class as PD's Sabre2. PD's Spectre is a tapered 7-cell. The Pilot will definitely be a quicker canopy than the Spectre. All of them will be about as easy to pack as the next, though a Spectre might cut about 0.6s out of your pack job because it has two less cells. All three above mentioned canopies will be forgiving, but will also allow you to learn more advanced canopy flying techniques, if that's what you're looking for (and everyone seems to be these days). With your experience, you won't want to load it too much -- no more than 1.1, says I. Any of these canopies, even at a low wingloading, will provide some swoop. Totes. On my Sabre2 and on every new Sabre2 I've seen here at my home DZ, it's generally about four inches. This may be changing on the HP side. My Katana shipped with the lowers let out just right (maybe even a hair long). Reportedly, it's the same deal with Velos. And I know this is the case with the demo fleet of Katanas and Velocities, as well. "¯"`-._.-¯) ManBird (¯-._.-´"¯" Click

I agree with both of Dave's comments. At 170 jumps, I agree that you really shouldn't be concerned with more speed just yet, and you're underloading that canopy for what you want to do with it. Furthermore, starting with double fronts on any canopy is going to yield a lot of pressure. Generally, one does a front riser turn, and only goes to double fronts for adjustments after the turn. Yeah. I think they were talking about making it a monthly event for the summer. So, maybe once or twice more this year. It pretty much needs to be during the week, as they do a lot of tours on the weekend. Jared's the LO. The video wasn't super. Jared left a hair late or I left a hair early. Then he went straight for a bit and I turned right almost immediately, so he's not in frame for most of the jump. But we have a better exit for next time. Man, I wish I got the landings on video (including mine). I habitually shut my camera off under canopy. It was fun swooping in to that farm. Jared tore it up on a Sabre 150, Darren had a very ballsy obstacle-ridden swoop, and Zaz flipped. Fun stuff. Didn't see Jeff's or Steph's... I was already packing in a failed attempt to do a second jump. "¯"`-._.-¯) ManBird (¯-._.-´"¯" Click

I've had that movie on DVD for over a year and a half now. My friend saw it in the theater in China on opening day, and called me from a payphone to tell me about it. It's that absolutely amazing. He bought the DVD as soon as it came out and shipped it off to me. I've seen it a good two dozen times since. Jet Li fans might like it, but Zhang Yimou fans will love it (I am the latter -- he's my favorite director). FYI, Quentin Tarantino had zero to do with this movie other than buying the rights for US distribution and slapping his name on it. Do not be deceived. This is a Zhang Yimou film. Regardless, definitely see it as soon as you can. "¯"`-._.-¯) ManBird (¯-._.-´"¯" Click

IMO, throw the technical bullshit aside. If you feel like you're falling before your canopy starts flying, it's a BASE jump. And if it's not. Who cares. It's still fun. "¯"`-._.-¯) ManBird (¯-._.-´"¯" Click

Did a two-way this morning before work. It was freaking awesome. I did a full float exit from one side of the balloon and my friend exited facing outward on the other side. I went head low for a bit as I was trying to film him (which had me putting my chest out). Still managed to get 35s in 2700' of freefall -- not too bad. Opened right over where we launched the balloon. Surprisingly enough, all six on that load landed back at the launch site (wingsuit or not). My friend, Jared, was borrowing my GTi. It was his sixth wingsuit jump and he got 30s in a 2,200' freefall (and he had a better exit than I did). It freaking rocked. I love crap like this. "¯"`-._.-¯) ManBird (¯-._.-´"¯" Click

Rear riser landings, when is too soon?
ManBird replied to WrongWay's topic in Swooping and Canopy Control
I started getting on my rears in the high 700s, but I was coached on it, and had 200+ jumps on that canopy. Maybe a little early, but having some actual training on the matter definitely helped from both a performance and safety view. "¯"`-._.-¯) ManBird (¯-._.-´"¯" Click -
I have to disagree. I've gone many-a-night without a beer because all that was available some of the piss mentioned on the above list. I'd rather have no beer than piss beer. Just my preference. "¯"`-._.-¯) ManBird (¯-._.-´"¯" Click

I agree with their worst beer list. I would reprioritize their TOP 100 list, though. Deschutes Brewery was pretty far down and Orkney and New Belgium Breweries didn't even make the list. And Arrogant Bastard should be on the bottom 100. There's a Rolling Rock Light? How the fuck does it get any lighter? "¯"`-._.-¯) ManBird (¯-._.-´"¯" Click

I am in love with my new canopy. I bought one off the shelf and totally lucked out on colors. Check how fucking hot this canopy looks. If all that was left was shit brown, I would have bought it. The fact that it looks like this is a major bonus. The "silver" looks medium grey on the ground. In flight, with it's sheen and transparency, it is indeed a silver canopy with end cells as red as candy. Kirk (TALONSKY) got some video -- you have to watch the video in order to appreciate what this thing looks like in flight. http://www.deepart.org/files/katana97.wmv Just flying straight here... nothing fancy. The outstanding appearance is a small compliment to how this thing flies. "¯"`-._.-¯) ManBird (¯-._.-´"¯" Click

The original purpose of the rear deflector was to allow air to pass through the leg wing to reduce the chance of a pilot chute in tow on a weak pull. It also gives the leg wing a major boost in forward speed, because it is routing air over the wing, thus putting pressure on top of it. The deflector itself is also a small, inflatable wing. The shape it gets when inflated reduces turbulence coming off your rig. "¯"`-._.-¯) ManBird (¯-._.-´"¯" Click

Fuckin' A, I love the Bahamas. I went there for a week in 2000 and went jet skiing (no, not waverunning) almost the entire time. Everybody kept asking me to take pictures, so I brought a camera and filled up the rolls with the worst, ugliest, trashiest parts of the island. It was actually somewhat difficult to do, being that there's so much beauty there. "¯"`-._.-¯) ManBird (¯-._.-´"¯" Click

First wingsuit flight after 6000 jumps and 40 years skydiving

Ah, yes, you did. I place the blame square on Carrot Top. Everything is that guy's fault. "¯"`-._.-¯) ManBird (¯-._.-´"¯" Click -
You'd think that, but a lot of juries are just backwards stupid. Like the guy who sued Precision when he blew up his reserve. Guess what, fuckass? You were skydiving! Shit happens. The jury obviously couldn't figure that out. Grrr... "¯"`-._.-¯) ManBird (¯-._.-´"¯" Click
