This morning I was in the long line at the post office, when I felt a hand putting my shirt label back under my collar. It was an older woman (there are lots of friendly grandma types in Sarasota)...a few minutes later, some of the paperwork I was mailing fell on the floor and she helped me pick them up. "I'm going to have to follow you around today to watch out for you" she said (hitting on me? or just overfriendly?)... "Well if you do", I replied "you'll be jumping out of a plane after me, 'cause I'm going skydiving this afternoon!", and handed her the 'Parachutist' mag I was reading in line. wow you all have great picks! I liked snow crash alot, but CITY that is one older classic science fiction that few know about.....as a preteen I received from a retiree neighbor a bag of beatup sf paperbacks with prices like 35cents on the lurid covers, and that was one of the best of them.... I just read William Gibson's latest, "Pattern Recognition" it has no 'cyberpunk' or 'science fiction themes' yet describes today 2003 and makes it look just as novel and trippy as in his other books. Highly recomended, a fast read too. also the 'dangerous visions' pick....that too is a classic collection of stories, totally radical for those acid-dripped days (published in '67 or so) "The reason angels can fly is that they take themselves so lightly." --GK Chesterton

As for birds and facial jewelry: A friend of mine who owned a piercing/tattoo studio came by the house and put our parrot on his shoulder. ' I have 4 parrots' he said, 'I know how to handle them!' The parrot, seeing that bright collection of facial rings, fastened his beak on the eyebrow ring and nearly pulled it (and the eyebrow) right out of his head! And I received the fotos from some friends in Brasil! I am surprised I haven't received them from a thousand other emails/forums by now.... Besides Gibson and Stephenson, I really like Bruce Sterling, another founder of the 'cyberpunk' style. Also good is Lewis Shiner, "Deserted Cities of the Heart", for one, not heavy-tech science fiction books, but great visionary stuff... Hi, Alysse and I were there tonite too! Ron Hill coached us and Igor, Andrea, and Steve (all of us jump together at zhills). Anybody know: How many gallons of airplane fuel gets consumed every jump run? How many does a twin otter consume per jumprun/22 skydivers= $howmuch/little-ole-me?? A buddy's son made it through the multitudes of wanna-bes to the first show of this seasons American Idol...One of the final 100. So I watched the entire 2 hours hoping to see him...and he never got airtime and got cut from the final 30...that was a painful 2 hours!
