Learning Japanese will help them understand YOU but you won't understand them! Classes teach us a polite japanese that sounds nice to them but they will respond in conversational japanese with totally different verb structure! Remember....if they want to communicate with you, words don't matter! Some of my most difficult conversations were not due to language problems but that the other didn't want or know how to make himself clear.... There are a couple books about street signs and food labels etc. Learn to READ the signs, its a better use of your time until you get there. Stay out of the big cities except Kyoto. Nagasaki is cool. Forget about Tokyo/Yokohama for now. Okinawa is more american than japanese these days. Teach English. Charge a minimum of 10,000 yen (ichi-man en) for individual or small group for an hour and half class (1-4 people can pitch in to pay you). Walk in the mountains. Live in a mountain or seaside town you will be forced to learn to speak and understand quickly. Visit every temple festival day happening near where you will be. That is the real Japan and people are at their best. Eat every kind of festival munchies they sell. I love takoyaki and okonomiyaki! I got out of the big city and walked a 1200 year old buddhist pilgrimage path. It was 900 miles in a circle and took me 7 weeks. I met people who had only seen foreigners on TV and they treated me great! Kyoto is less crazy than Tokyo, easier to get around, can walk out your door and up into the hills and down to dozens of historic temples. Excellent foreign community very organized and helpful Check out KANSAI TIME OUT magazine from Osaka/Kyoto. It will tell you what's happening and has classifieds for places to stay etc. I suggest going to Kyoto first and look for the gaijin hangouts, they will help you get going. Kyoto Visitors Center is right by the main train station, extremely helpful. A Japan Rail Pass for two weeks will get you everywhere. Don't waste it by travelling to nearby places. Use it to go all the way north by bullet train to Hokkaido, then all the way south to Nagasaki and back. You can take side trains, buses, and ferryboats for side trips all included in railpass! Nagasaki is very cool....kind of a san francisco of japan. A ferry boat ride out of Hiroshima to Miyajima Island, stay there one nite. Near Kyoto is Nara, very historic and a mellower place to live. Home of the Big Buddha. I love it there! Sunset over Nara seen from the balcony of Nigatsu-do Temple above Todaiji Big Buddha Temple. Summertime at zhills usually is hot and sunny till 3pm or so when the daily rain starts. Once the rain passes it usually opens up for a few loads till late sunset, but often everyone is drinking by then (or in our case a couple weekends ago....drying out our canopies until sunset!) Bill, sorry I missed the muff fireworks, I am out of town. But I called Igor at 9pm and could hear the noise and lots of people shouting their enjoyment. yeah, the latest motorola stuff... we just saw Oceans Thirteen, and they had an example of automated fingerprint matching screens, minutia and all....minutia are focal points on the print that get scanned and searched....the more points that match the better the identification 'HIT'. each fingerprint file has ten lines for amputations....how much of each finger is missing from the scan there's another table for Scars Marks and Tattoos, pages and pages of descriptions of all the types and places they can be.....needs to be updated for Piercings though (serious!) which weren't so common when the codes were last written. yeah, its fascinating being in the inside of the machine! Hey man, one of those systems you are talking about is the one that I am overhauling....the State of Florida Dept of Law Enforcement Fingerprint and criminal history databases. It ties into the FBI NCIC database and other systems too. Usually they check the state files, then send it along to Feds. On his show a few days ago, he walked through the everglades swamps. Up to his knees in filthy water, snakes and gators, eating grubs, larvae, small frogs (all raw)....he did find a turtle to roast...He made a platform to sleep above the water, but woke up covered in bites!. Its a short surgery and they may let you go home the same day depending on what your doctor thinks afterwords. Insurance should cover it. I got mine taken out almost 10 years ago and haven't missed it yet! marc "The reason angels can fly is that they take themselves so lightly." --GK Chesterton

I've been working weekdays in TLH and so far Kitcho is my favorite. Definitely will check out Harry's, heard alot about it, but its downtown and not near my workplace. Cafe Cabernet on Monroe is very good too.... I met SkinnyShrek at the Ale House, food was good and prices reasonable there.
