Is there a special reason that you don't want to use a USB port instead of firewire port? I'm using an extrernal Sony DVD burner (DRX 5100UL) which uses a USB port. Works great! Software wise, I'm using Sonic MyDVD (which came with the drive) and am very pleased with it......especially at the price $300 for burner and software. Doc http://www.manifestmaster.com/video

The PC105 exports and imports well so the problem must be in your system. 600mz is pretty slow for AVI capture although it is possible. I use XP, Adobe Premiere 6.0 (which is old obviously) but I'm using a 2.6 ghz processor. I can capture fine and export back to the PC105 with no problem. Card wise I'm using a Pinnacle DV-500 (oldie but goodie). So keep your camera but work on upgrading your computer. Doc http://www.manifestmaster.com/video

I use Verbatim DVD+R. You can buy them at Sam's Club in lots of 30 for around $45 or 1.50 per disk. I use DVD+R rather that -R because I don't know any better and it seems to work on all DVD players. Am I missing something? Doc http://www.manifestmaster.com/video

I use Sonic MyDVD and a Sony burner. I've had problems similar to yours and corrected it by separating the process of creating of the DVD files from the actual burning process. When running Sonic MyDVD, when you're ready to burn your DVD, don't click the BURN button. Instead, select TOOLS, then MAKE DVD FOLDER. This will create your DVD files on your hard drive. When its done, you should find these folders on your hard drive: AUDIO_TS JACKET_P OpenDVD VIDEO_TS Now exit Sonic MyDVD. Use another program to copy those folders to a blank DVD, as if you were just creating a data disk. I use RecordNOW DX which I believe comes with most Sony DVD burners. This also makes it easy to burn multiple copies of the same DVD. The burning process usually takes around 10 to 15 minutes. Lastly, if your DVD burner is external, make certain your not powering the burner on and off without first using the SAFELY REMOVE HARDWARE feature. If running windows, you should find an icon in your system tray called SAFELY REMOVE HARDWARE. Click this and follow the direction until it tells you that it is safe to turn off your burner. I had several bad burns before I discovered this Hope this helps you. Doc http://www.manifestmaster.com/video

Ditto! I've been jumping the same Sidewinder since 1999. I started with a PC-1 but now have my PC105 in it. It required a little modification with a drimmel tool but works great. The only downside is that the lanc port faces the helmet so the CamEye is a pain. You have to plug it in before you bolt the camera in. Doc http://www.manifestmaster.com/video

I agree, the PC-105 is the way to go. got mine for $649. However, be careful. The battery charger that came with mine was a piece of crap that sells on eBay for $25. I had to buy the actual Sony M-series charger for $116 elsewhere. Really pissed! Otherwise, the PC-105 is a kick ass camera! Doc http://www.manifestmaster.com/video

Brand new PC-105 are going for under $700. I moved up from a PC-1 and absolutely love it. doc Doc http://www.manifestmaster.com/video

I agree that the Sony PC-105 is a great choice and its affordable (under $700). 2 problems with it though: the lanc port is on the right so if you mount it on the left of your helmet, its a pain to plug in your CamEye (and you'll need a CamEye II) Secondly, the analog a/v output isn't the usually miniplug. It a weird, odd shaped plug for analog output. Works well but makes it a pain to show a quick replay right after a dive. (at our dz we have a tv with the adapter already plugged in ready to go, but I can't use it now) Just my 2 cents Doc http://www.manifestmaster.com/video

I believe the same goes for the Sony PC-105. You can capture a still image to memory stick during playback. Capturing an image "live" doesn't improve the quality above capture from tape (and yes, the quality is lacking). (at least that's my experience. You can shoot me down if I'm wrong) So the remote wouldn't do much for me. Doc http://www.manifestmaster.com/video

I also assume that I'm catering to a broad band audience. 56k modem users can still download the file. Might take all night for them to download but they can then view them off their hard drive. Using Premiere, I create WMV files at 256 kbps and get great audio and acceptable video. A 7 minute video is around 12 megs. Check out my video site and see for yourself http://manifestmaster.com/video/ Hope this helps Doc http://www.manifestmaster.com/video

I'm amazed how durable the Sony PC series is. I jumped the same Sony PC-1 for 5 years, sometimes in the rain, heat, high humidy, cold. You name it. It never malfunctioned. I finally managed to drop it and break it this year and moved up to a PC105. Long live Sony! Doc http://www.manifestmaster.com/video

Good video editing and capturing program fro the PC?
docjohn replied to 321seeya's topic in Photography and Video
As for Pinnacle, I use their hardware. I had a DV-200 and then moved up to a DV-500 (for analog capture). Premiere? I love it. I've been using it 3 years. It took some learning but it does a great job for skydiving videos, especially tandems. I also used a Pyro Platinum capture card. Not much difference in capture cards. Theirs lots of tutorials and books out there for Premiere. Anyway, it gets my vote. Doc http://www.manifestmaster.com/video -
OK. Sounds like time to buy a CamEye II. Thanks for the info Doc http://www.manifestmaster.com/video

It works fine with my PC1 but not the PC105. I'm willing to upgrade to the CamEye II if it will fix the problem. Doc http://www.manifestmaster.com/video

Just upgraded to a PC105 froma PC1. Now I have a CamEye problem: It works OK going from standby to record, and holding the button down for 5 seconds causes the camera to shut down as expected, but then hitting the button again doesn't turn it back on. I'm used to turning off the camera under canopy but now I'm unable to turn it back on. Does the CamEye II fix this? Thanks in advance Doc Doc http://www.manifestmaster.com/video

AWESOME AWESOME AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I have some videos on the web in WMV format. They're mediocre compared to yours so I won't embarrass myself by showing them to you. Question: How big are your MOV files? I'm limited to 100MB of space and my 5 minutes videos are around 12mb in size. And the quality sucks compared to yours! I'm using Adobe Premiere to create them and QuickTime is an option but I've never used it. GREAT JOB! You rock! Doc Doc http://www.manifestmaster.com/video

Putting skydiving videos on the net
docjohn replied to bigfritz's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
I use Premiere 6 as well. I have a dozen or so videos posted on my site. Its a trade off of quality. Full screen AVI's are around 4mb per second. On my site, I have some 5 minute videos that are about 10 megs in size (but the quality shows it). I create WMV files (Windows Media Video I think). So try this. Select FILE, then EXPORT TIMELINE, then ADVANCED WINDOWS MEDIA, then choose VIDEO FOR BROADBAND NTSC 256 KBPS. You get acceptable quality. If you'd like to see some examples, check out my videos at www.manifestmaster.com/video Hope this helps Doc Doc http://www.manifestmaster.com/video -
Could you tell me where you got your Diamond .30x lens? I'm thinking about buying a 105 but have only seen the .45x lens so far. Thanks Doc Doc http://www.manifestmaster.com/video

I've been jumping the same Sony PC-1 for 5 years and finally managed to break it. I want to upgrade to a Sony PC 105. Does anyone know how similar they are in size, shape, screw hole, etc? I'm using a Sidewinder helmet and want to continue to use it without making any major modifications. Thanks Doc Doc http://www.manifestmaster.com/video
