  1. Config: g4 powerbook titanium 512M ram, 800Mhz, FCP3, Sony DCR-PC9, LaCie 120G ext. firewire drive. (the FW cable goes from camera to ext. HD to computer) After logging a tape for batch capture, I'm getting errors warning me of dropped frames. I've shut down all unnecessary programs, but as long as the camera is attatched to the FW drive and not directly to the computer I get the dropped frames error. Does anyone know of a way to make this work so I can capture all my data straight to the FW drive?? Thanks!
  2. I've had problems w/ the Elan 7 and this lens not communicating with each other, and essentially shutting down my camera functionally.

    Is this an S?

I don't get it. How IS'NT this a span? Span does not mean BRIDGE. It means SPAN. Y'know, like when you span a rope over a canyon?
  6. I usually will bring some good rain gear, a bunch of summer clothes, and my GI Joe doll. A rig is good to bring, too. ;)
  7. I posted this on blinc--applies to you, too. http://www.blincmagazine.com/forum/dcboard.php?az=show_topic&forum=7&topic_id=12875&mesg_id=12875&page Fixed Link huck Fixed the link, hope you don't mind. The bold indicators should go outside the url indicators. ~ Tom Aiello
  8. QuoteAs a guesstimate, what would you say is the average age of most active BASE jumpers today? I can't speak for anyone else, but I'm -47 if you count all those things they said would take a few years off of my life.
  9. I figure there may be a *few* computer types around here; I'm in the market for a new MAC. Probably a G4 titanium or a ultra-fast G4 desktop setup. Does anyone have any leads on the best mac deals out there? Thanks!

    McConkey ??

Typically, I think that a [slider down] "over" will open a tad bit slower than a PCA, with less predictable heading results. Personally, I prefer them slider up, which obviously eats up a bit more altitude. Of course, the vertical altitude it takes to open your parachute is mostly dependent on the strength of your horizontal launch, and how fat you are, IMHO. Also for you young, dumb impressionables who are unpacking your stillettos right now I would like to mention that [present] conventional wisdom suggests that you use a closed tailgate on your slider down/off overs (McConkeys). Unpacked jumps look much easier than they are scary. See Dick try to jump over his unpacked parachute. See Dick flail. See Dick fall into his open canopy and die. Don't be a dick.
  12. I don't usually like to mix my bumping and my jumping, but sometimes you just need that extra pick me up...
  13. here here. coming from one of those 'shy' jumpers, I certainly don't like my name being mentioned on the internet--at all (Tom you have any and all permission to edit a post with my name in it). As for site naming, why would you? What purpose does it serve? Discussions about a particular site should be taken to PM. Let me be the 1000th person to point out that NPS and other legal types monitor these boards on a regular basis. Why? Because they are the AntiBASE. They think that we belong behind bars for our blatant disregard for our own lives and the lives of others. [aerial deliver THIS punk!]. I'm with ya Tom...even though you're soft.
  14. does anyone know where I can get cheap rolls of 200asa color print film (24 exp)? I'm looking to buy in bulk, probably 100+ rolls. thanks

    BASE numbers

Point taken...although I have met "high" (and low) numbered BASE jumpers who, judging by their actions and attitudes, had learned all there is to learn about BASE, and wouldn't even concieve that "their way" might not be the best. Also, I was trying to point out that there are BASE jumpers out there who have "high" jump numbers, who don't realize how many times LUCK has kept them alive. The tendancy in BASE seems to be that when someone survives a jump, they did so because of skill. In all honesty, due mainly to technical advances in the sport with regards to equipment, packing methods, etc., most jumpers rarely get to use/practice their "skills." Your real BASE skills are the ones you use at a split second's notice, when you have to act or be smeared. Yeah, aerials and flying your canopy take skills, But I'm oversimplifying to make my point; You're (we're) not as good as we think we are, and when you do think you are that good, you're probably gonna get fucked up when your time comes. .02 [but I'm willing to change ;)]
  18. yes...thanks a lot--that's what I needed! ONE

    BASE numbers

even 100 BASE jumps is not a lot. For that matter, 3-400 BASE jumps is not really a lot. Think of it this way; In skydiving, where you have 40+ seconds PER JUMP to hone your skills, after 3-400 jumps you are just REALLY starting to get it. Why would that learning curve be any different for BASE? Especially seeing as the majority of BASE jumps (excluding wingsuits) fall in the 0-6 second range. A false sense of security is NOT better than none at all. Please err on the conservative side. Maybe we can keep the fatalities in 2003 to 1. In addition, I'd just like to point out a good general rule; Even if you have more than 1000 BASE jumps, don't ever be afraid to learn from someone with 5 jumps. Quite often you might find that even non-jumpers sometimes have vauable insight on your jumping.
  20. I know a certain Gargantuan Kiwi BASE jumper who seemed to be having good luck recently w/ a 321sf FLIK from BR after his other canopy, um...tore a bit. He is 6'6", and usually jumps with a fully loaded handbag under his skirt so as long as your weight is proportionate to your height, you should not have much of a problem with something this size. When I saw him landing it a couple weeks ago, he seemed to be having extremely nice soft landings. Keep in mind though, that a canopy doesn't land you...YOU land the canopy. It is only a big piece of nylon until you tell it what to do when. You are in control of how soft your landing is. In other words...practice in a stress-free environment until you're confident that you won't fold under the pressure of a real BASE jump.
  21. Your packjob should be as clean as it needs to be to make you feel comfortable on the exit point it was packed for. This will vary from person to person. Personally, I take more than a few extra steps if only because it helps me remember my packjob later on. On just about every hike, climb, or other pre jump activity, I go over my whole packjob in my head, making sure I didn't forget something nasty in the mix (sometimes when you're riding an elevator to the top of a building though, you just don't have the time for this!!!!). With that said, there are really 3 or 4 things you MUST do for your BASE canopy to open quick and on heading: the rest is detail. Detailed packjobs are good. They make sure that your interaction with the object is not more intimate than you would like. Rushed packjobs can be bad. Besides, if you stay current with your jumping/packing, your packjob will speed up a ton. Learn what your canopy looks/feels like. Hang it up, inspect it. Climb your ass into each cell and see what goes where, and why. How many crossports does your canopy have? Do you know the difference between linegroups? Do you know where wear is most likeley to occur and why--AND do you know how worn YOUR canopy is? Know your gear. Use whatever tools you need. Check them in, Check them out. Take as much time as you need. There's always someone who can pack faster--don;t let their impatience alter your packjob. Symmetry, symmetry, symmetry. How it goes in is the way it comes out. And most importantly--your momma.
  22. Must I be the first one to remind you folks the OTHER reason they are called TARDs? Can you say "short bus?" The name reminds me of my favorite big-wall climbing tool: RURPs--the Realized Ultimate Reality Piton. A TARD can easily be your Realized Ultimate Reality. Don't be a Dick.
