Right and we can see where Darius's sympathies are. Shouldn't we deal with the CONTENT of the post rather than attack the poster. Another aspect of this is the relative value a culture places on a life, and from there the value members of that culture place on their own life. In recent years (the last 50 or so), First-World societies have placed a very high value on individual life. WHere once casualties of 20,000 in a single day were accepted by society, the deaths of single soldiers is now deemed in some way unacceptable. Historically, no shortage of honours have been granted posthumously for what were in effect acts of suicide for a perceived greater good. The First-World problem in this is their failure to realise that other cultures may not share their current values on individual life versus believed duty. Mike. Pretty sick if you ask me! I can accept bone marrow donations in return for reduced sentences, but not irreplaceable organs. Who would get these donated kidneys, etc?... If a kidney fetches a particularly high price on eBay then will the inmate get more time off?.. And will any surplus "offal" go to enrich the prison gruel. It could be considered as setting a bad example to them, particularly if they go on in later life to get far too many pets with different partners..! So the rumours about Dubbie's Theses (YES! ThesES) is true!!? Despite his first thesis; "Englishing as a Sekund Langwidge" being harshly criticised for the title taking up almost all of the bar-napkin, I have noticed it being cited in many presidential speeches over the last decade or so. His second (science) thesis; "On the excessively high fuel consumption of the F-105 Thunderchief and its resultant short range", is perhaps justifiably suppressed... Absolutely. Surely ANY thesis on politics or society or international relations (no matter how well researched or reasoned) written in the light of what was happening in 1969 would only be good for a Roll-On-The-Floor-Laugh today. In other words, a typical government program. On that basis the government should never do anything... Err...... Really, the question is whether the benefits will significantly outweigh the costs... More govt. control my brother. More control. Where does it end? Yes. Perhaps. but the advantages of a ID Card scheme really outweigh the disadvantages. Also, I've never had a problem with national biometric databases and their being searched. Then again, that may just be the 20 years as a cop speaking. Alternatively, it may be the 40+ years of never having had to lie about who I am and being quite happy to prove it. Aww... C'Mon... What happened to playing the subject rather than the poster. If it helps, I apologise for sticking my tongue in my cheek during my original post. My reason for asking was that when I called someone (for example) "Hillary Clinton" during an E-correspondence, I got the reply that it was "Hillary RODHAM Clinton" (their typing)! In effect, how dare I omit the correspondent's MAIDEN name. I thought this a bit extreme (although obviously not as extreme as being disrespectful to Saint Hillary - in future I'll confine that to Dubbie & Tony B'Liar). Hence my original question about folk clinging to their whole name, maiden & married and insisting on the use of both. Mike. PS: Nice to be called a Right-winger again. It's not the fact they retain their name that strikes me as desperate, it's the desperate way they insist on the name being used. Why do you care? I don't "care". I'm interested. Just a small query for the "Jonathans" (I'm feeling historical today). What's the thing with married womens' surnames in America - particularly their insistence on retaining their maiden surname as a sort of middle name or precursor surname? It seems that they get quite irate if their maiden name is omitted. So, what is it that makes, for example; "Hillary Rob'em Clinton" cling so desperately to their original name? Mike. Socialised Medicine does tend to be more efficient. It often looks poor compared to America's system because most countries don't put as big a percentage of their money into it. Also, it covers stuff that a private health insurer won't ever consider like chronic ailments and care of the elderly. I'm sure that AMericas politicians will approach this in a careful and considered manner. A major priority would of course be a fact-finding tour of countries with Socialised Medicine. I'm sure they'll all want to see at first hand how a country (like, say, Britain) manages its Socialised Medicine System during major population movements (like, say, the 2012 Olympics). Then they can compare that with their findings of the 2008 Olympics in China. Yeah... I can see how Socialised Medicine would need a great deal of looking at. Mike.
