1 - that question will backfire on you as Kallend has first hand knowledge of the times 2 - Anyway, you don't want to know the answer, hint - that period was known as the "Great Bean Eating Era" ... and any contribution to private charity doesn't count contributions to political causes don't count personally giving to anyone doesn't count loaning money to his down and out cousin doesn't count it's hypocrisy unless he gives money directly to the US treasury to do as the government sees fit with no strings or expectations - that's the end result of "happy to pay more" like any "please raise taxes" hypocrit - Buffet is happy for everyone else to pay more but doesn't have the balls to do it without forcing the rest of the tax paying base to do the same ... "and not making the million exceptions to that experiment" ah ha - but no way could that happen with our current politicians now could it I like your scenarios that show we are so incredibly efficient that losing any dollars results in tragedy. do the soldiers REALLY die? Do you REALLY shut he ATC down for two weeks? Does that family REALLY not get saved? methinks you place a lot of faith in government doing things with money and not a lot of faith in people finding ways to get things done more efficiently. (Actually, I see your post as more of a clear indicator of how "addicted" the public is to government service - it really tells how far we have swung on the spectrum) ... I completely agree. Cut the waste. ya know what? cut everything "waste" implies we know what's necessary and what isn't - but if we cut everything, I think we'll find out that nothing in there is absolutely necessary. meh - the whole story isn't really there one scenario - employee is stoned at work. As a result, he is subjected to testing to confirm and then he's fired would that be a satisfactory scenario? So you don't think big programs should be evaluated after they are implemented to see how well they work? No wonder we have a huge deficit. OOH, ooh, I want to play: ..... So you think incredibly controversial and expensive programs should all just be cut in and assessed after the fact without smaller scale testing? ... I'd say the ratcheting of requirements on nuclear plants over time gets in the way I'd say that subsidizing one form of 'green' energy is a direct way of opposing other forms (taking money from one area to fund another essentially starves other alternatives) want more? ... a couple things - give up? absolutely not gov should get out of the way? absolutely "should have done a long time ago"?? the right time for it to happen is when it happens - those companies that start now get a head start - if they start too soon, they'll be bankrupt, if they start too late, they miss the high profit curve at the beginning of demand. A few will hit it just right. That's the risk of business. ... Green jobs - 1 type - faked up ideas that are not financially and technologically ready for the real world but make nice sound bites and leverage political power grabs - results in transfer of money via taxes and fees and do not improve our standard of living one bit 2 type - real ideas that improve efficiencies and will propagate in industry because they are the right thing to do from a business perspective - require zero government involvement and tend to be blocked so pols can make hay out of the first type I'm all for type 2 green development. One attitude towards the term depends on which type their mind clicks on when the term is brought up. Unfortunately, the type 1 is so in our faces all the time that the type 2 is bunched in with them and dismissed without regard. Still a member of the "leave me alone" political party ...
