  1. Except that those very light hands almost completely destroyed you. Almost all those industries have shown that if left to their own regulation would be detrimental to a very large part of the population. Or would actually completely destroy the country. that's not fact, that's opinion - there's an equally sized contingent that believes just the opposite seriously, you think regulation helps? Do you think that congress guaranteeing home loans encourages less risky loan giving/taking? Do you think passing laws "requiring" home loans be given to those that can't afford them makes for healthy business decisions? do you think keeping failing car companies alive is good for the country long term? you want examples for healthcare and energy policy too? ... 3. I maintain the same. Since they did a piss poor job making rules, the financial system was brought to ruin. Private industry just did what it always does....make as much money as quickly as possible. the government made the rules that just about forced private industry to make those decisions. So the answer is less government, not more (I said less, not zero - reference the whole 'pendulum' discussion.....) ... 4. I don't see that. Which other industries are being taken over? taken over, highly regulated for control vs quality, establishing influence up to the point of essentially controlling it completely, etc etc? US so far? Auto-industry (one of the biggest employer industries) banks (the money) energy (energy) healthcare (healthcare) pretty much the foundation of the economy and society - very precise targeting for a massive increase in government control of the state of the individual. Not protection and support.....control. If one were to be protecting individual freedoms, these are the very industries that we'd want very light hands on, not a tighter stranglehold. ... 6. and escalatory, and cynical, and over-generalized to name a few more accurate descriptions of my post {locally, we are seeing threats to strike by the city and state gov unions if they don't get 5-10%, in essence, they are demanding tax increases on the rest of the populace to make this happen.....} ... 8. though I agree with you in general, I think assuming that "basic human nature" in politics is, by default, SINISTER makes for more enjoyable posting As for this specific one? I'm still not sure, there seems to be a very concerted effort to take over all the major/key industries - I think that's not an overreaction to any particular situation. I think that's a genuine political philosophy being pushed by those in power right now - while they still can. ... 9. what makes you think you did enough to deserve more? everybody "works hard" so that's a no starter some people got cuts last year and had more work added while friends were laid off if you want to get automatic raises for doing nothing, work for the government and join the union - then you can get raises on the backs of people that really work and didn't get them ... 11. Here's a neat trick to avoid 'ever having to bailout the financial sector again'... Don't do it next time This is really just a gambit by the government to set up expectations that they can arbitrarily decide to shut down/take over any industry by designating it as "too big to fail" This can be done for power, or just out of spite, or just to get votes whenever one feels like it. Old politics - create a fake issue and talk alot about it and issue impotent new laws that can't possibly be enforced, hold a lot of passionate debates, and claim you did something - get votes New politics - create a scapegoat - devastate the industry and the economy - raise taxes - get votes see? the New politics is much shorter to describe. Therefore it's more efficient. I suspect a couple people here are dancing in the streets in joy as we navigate to this new direction ... 14. Here's the problem - The Reps got royally kicked last time. Dems are in. Now, if the Dems are royally kicked this time (deservedly so, even as much as the Reps last time) - do we now have two groups of people in office that are 'recalibrated'? absolutely not - if the Dems get kicked, the Reps memory span will be reduced to less than 2 years and we start all over again. the solution is to just keep everybody in antagonistic balance/gridlock so they just plain STOP DOING STUFF So we have to keep both houses gridlocked, and the president needs to be someone that's against both parties. A little political constipation is needed rather than the spending diarrhea we've have for the last couple decades ... 16. a complete joke - a shell game in the end, those "specific purposes" are not a means to fund special purposes, maybe that's the story you've been fed, but those are gambits to effect additional tax collection on targetted markets above and beyond normal collections - the biggest joke is when the taxing and the spending of "special projects" are intended for the purpose of 'effecting behavior change' or some other nonsense. It's all just another trough they create it's not like the dollars are a different shade of green or will burst into flame if used elsewhere I'd like to refer you to the mockery concept of the SS "lockbox" for evidence..... people love this when dollars get moved from something they hate to something they like - but they get outraged when it happens the other way around this is the government you trust and worship and want to give all your money to since they are smarter at spending it than all of us Edit: just put it ALL in a big general fund - prioritize ALL the spending from top to bottom - fund the top, then the next, then the next, and when the money runs out - everything left over on the bottom of the list get canceled. Everything is important to someone, but the money supply isn't infinite. Hopefully your 'contract' is near the top. ... 17. to quote a wise man - "that's not your money" once the government takes it by your own words, if the gov decides to suddenly delete SS and fund something else - say some jobs programs - you should be fine with that So you believe in reneging on contracts. We're talking about taxes raised for a very specific purpose, stated in advance, not general taxation. Rather like aviation taxes going into the trust fund to support airports and ATC. I'm not talking about MY beliefs. Follow the quote to its source. You are the one that thinks the government owns all the resources and cash to do whatever they feel like and that anything that remains in a private citizens wallet is by the fortunate grace of your leaders. You get what you voted for. ... Driving is a one dimensional activity - a monkey can do it - being proud of your driving abilities is like being proud of being able to put on pants
