  2. and extend that - now that students get loans easier - demand goes up, and the price of education skyrockets. Thus making making it even more likely that more loans are mandated - thus driving demand up even more for degrees that don't pay for crap ... 5. It is the most, or at least one of the most, common fantasies held by women. I would still not wish it upon any woman. I don't believe that. Confusing "rape" with a fantasy to consentually having someone in sync enough with her to be direct and aggressive and confident in the act is just wrong. ... 6. I would derive great pleasure in assuring that, if determined guilty, that he never has the opportunity to do it to another person. Anything beyond that is petty and vengeful and not remotely related to the concept of justice and we're all better than that. ... 7. NOT my words - I'm wasn't referring to the teachers. I was referring to the religious, anti-religious, and politically charge people that try to hijack the curriculums. this I agree with, however, apparently, the concept of what most people consider 'nuts' is not so cut and dried when the populace is now swayed 50/50 by political tripe. Case in point in this thread, apparently I personally have no issue teaching evolution theory (since I took it off of your list of wacky subjects as not in the same ball park as the rest of your examples including climate change and gender training) - yet you seem to want to put it in the "nuts" category along with those two. ... 11. It's an odd analogy you're trying to put out there. I'd say it's only comparable if the scaffolding collapsed due to someone actively setting it off on purpose. "A terrorist caused a highrise scaffolding to collapse claiming four men's lives on Christmas Eve," Though, "collapse" is not analogous to "killed", but it is pretty analogous to "blast". In both cases, it still doesn't note who did it, or if it was on purpose or not. really? I guess if a gun was just sitting there on a table and went off randomly, then I'd have no issue saying a gun killed someone. Then the analogy would likely be to compare the owner that left it loaded with the engineer that designed the scaffolding or the contractor that built it incorrectly...... My short answer is that I'm still more interested in why the scaffolding collapsed and who, if any, was responsible than just the fact that it went down. Seems in the case of a criminal shooting someone, that analogous investigation is a lot quicker and easier to determine - the shooter is the guy that pulled the trigger. I'll read the rest of the article too and see if there's followup on what's being done to see why - I bet there's a comment in there on those lines. lastly - I don't really think that there is an active effort out in the world to ban scaffolding by people that have no idea or experience with scaffolding other than movies they've seen that caused them to be scared of scaffolding and also by them going to social events with others they want to hang out with that pontificate about popular subjects in the social circle such as why scaffolding is bad. So I don't think the question of motivation is really comparable either. however - I get your point. If we can save just one person, one child, ABSOLUTELY, ban all scaffolding. I'm still in pain remember how scaffolding killed my brother in 'Nam back in the 60's......... for the children ... 15. I'm a fan of your first paragraph. As for the second? well, those parents will do a poor job (by my subjective standards - see list of negative adjectives of your choice) and the kid will either turn out or not depending on their own merits, no thanks to mom or dad. If someone takes a personal interest to help out, that's great, but the government forcing my viewpoint on that family? I'm not really that arrogant to think "my way or it's the end of civilization as we know it". I've seen too many families where I thought the parents were doing a horrible job and the kids turned out just fine, anyway (and those that didn't, I think it was about 50/50) - I just don't know anyone qualified to make that decision for someone else's family. Nor do I think a 'committee' would do any better. ... 18. I'd think it would be more accurate to say "John killed Bob with a shotgun" rather than "Bob was killed by a shotgun blast" - I blame John. In the second item, sometimes they don't even mention who John was...... and you think the agenda is on the other side... anyway - the only point of the comment was to emphasize that killing is done by a person, not an object and it set you off and you deserve the mockery and the followup beer accordingly for it. ... 19. I get your points. I just think the wishes of the parents are better than the rest of us deciding for them. In clear cases of abuse, then that goes out the window of course. So, apparently the "line" is somewhere between: Interfere if the parent is beating his kids with bricks and knives ................and.............it's not really our business if the parent wants to expose the kids to various philosphies about helping ones neighbors when times are tough I line up quite a bit on the physically substantial side before I'd interfere with a parent and their child - some people want to interfere if the parent even thinks different than them. Again, if schooling was private and free market, then this is moot. It's up to the parents to prepare the kids for the real world. Not a bunch of strangers that think they are smarter than everyone else, even if they don't raise kids themselves.... ... 20. I disagree - yours says directly - "you want to skip these? fine, you don't graduate - here's a list of community colleges" Mine says "you want to take these others? we'll try to offer them as supplemental education" I really thought your tangent would be to equate the supplemental education with your directive to go to a community college. That would have been more clever. big difference in presentation - I took evolution off the list because it's just not in the same boat as climate change, or gender studies, etc for what I'm assuming is a high school based curriculum discussion. But put it back in if you think the evolution vs intelligent design debate is even a serious one. Again, the issue is there is not school choice for families with little resources. Fix that and all this goes away. yes, I think math is important. and the 'required' curriculum is always a bit subjective. But that subjective list should be for teaching people how to learn, not for indoctrination of political viewpoints or social brainwashing. I simply would like the power to rest with the parents, not the board or whichever political party is in charge at the time. If they can't choose the best school for their kids, then they need more power over the curriculum of the public offering without the pressure of having to allow the kiddies to substitute math and reading for tolerance and environmentalism classes. ... 22. why do you think anyone not taking sexual health or climate change doesn't get a diploma? I'd leave evolution in class, and the controversial topic I'd offer as an evening class would be intelligent design - right along side with climate change etc. short answer - your wording pretty much says - take all these classes or, screw you, you don't get a diploma. (if you can't force these topics on the kiddies, you apparently want to make it a real pain for them to be bypassed) mine says - here's controversial topics, you can choose to take these if you like but we won't force them on you or make you pay for them if you don't take them Choice vs forcing your viewpoints on others If we allowed vouchers and, thus, enabled public education options as a result, then this whole thing would be a moot point - parents could choose schools that matched their wishes instead of pissy discussions about required specific classes the NEA wishes for indoctrination..... ...
