Growing up on a dz as a kid in the 70's (dad was a jumper/instr) they did them. One that was memorable was I think in 77' or 78' at Perris. They had lit a giant bonfire (bigger than normal) in the landing area as a beacon, and I THINK they were 5 miles out. Well unfortunately some bikers on the other side of town were also having a raging bonfire, and yep thats where my dad and his buddies landed. The bikers thought it was the coolest thing. Just imagine sitting out in the sticks drinking and smoking and a bunch of people come out of no where, out of the darkness. Biker # 1 "dude what was in that pipe?" Biker # 2 "which one there was 3"

1 of the guys I was talking about I dont think jumps any more, so was not him, and the other guy i was referring to is Aubrey. Ya Amazon I have not seen Aubrey in over 5 years but it was always cool to see him jumping, and landing his canopy, smoothly, with all the free fliers landing around then high fiving him. I dont know if he has picked up WS dt.

It is possible. Like most of the posters have said, gonna have to do some searching for the right equipment, right dz , and right instructors. About 8 years ago at my home DZ we had a guy that was 6' 310 lbs. Not sure where he went through his training, but he had his license and some nice custom gear made for him. What he did in order to not always do solos is he would free fall on his belly and all the free fliers would use him as a base and come in and sting on multi levels. We also had some one go through the aff at my home dz he was 6'1 and 270. once he got his license he bought a new custom 300 sq ft canopy and a custom harness, and had no problems. So it is possible.

+10 touche. You too skypuppy, right on the mark. Pun not intended. -
And yes this cop was out of line, and could have taken another approach.
-
Not directed at you bigun, but I would like to hear every one just as PASSIONATE the next time an innocent police officer is killed while giving some one a traffic ticket, or ambushed in their vehicle while doing paperwork etc. Just because they chose a dangerous job doesnt mean its right or that it should be excepted by the public any less than a bad cop shooting an unarmed citizen. They are doing a job and also deserve to return home to their families as much as the citizen but nobody looses their shit when a cop is killed. And there are just as many cases of cops being killed through out history.

NO! It sounds like he is in favor of putting the responsibility where it should be... on the irresponsible parent/ irresponsible fire arm owner, which is what he has always said. LOCK UP YOUR GUN!!!!

Forgot to mention that much like skydiving ,there will always be people at the range that will give you, bad advice, wrong advice, or advice that does not pertain to your "discipline" or skill level just like at the DZ, from "that guy".

Hey Johnny, all good advice. Lil back ground. I have been shooting for fun/sport (little bit of competition on local level) for 20 years and hunting with dad since 13. Dad was in Marine Corps for 28 years and been a sheriff for 18 and not a patrol officer but a RSO (range safety officer) and trainer for law enforcement. The comparison to skydiving was good. A couple other things to consider in gear choice is, discipline. There are many firearms to choose from. Hold them, shoot them, ask about reliability, think about simplicity and ease of maintenance/cleaning. Glocks are dependable and simple to operate and very easy to clean and fairly smooth trigger, down side is there are minimal safeties so if you have children around maybe not for you. Kimber makes a nice .45. Ruger is ok IMO but lots of moving parts when comes to cleaning an not super simple. I tend to stay away from models that have a decocker. If you have to clear a malfunction, it is easy to hit the decocker in the process and make the gun "safe" when you try to get back to the business at hand and your gun is inert. There is a magazine called "shotgun news" that test fires all kinds of guns and they tell it like it is. There is no advertisement in the magazine so there is no bias, they call em like the see em. Revolvers are awesome, hate reloading them but great for home defense, down side is they can over penetrate (.357 or .38 ++p) depending on calber. IMO .38 or .380 is fun for target shooting at the range and pretty cheap, but lacks stopping power. I would only use a barreta as a door stop or maybe to pistol whip some one but thats about all its good for in my experience. There is a .22 conversion kit thats fairly cheap for glocks and kimbers so you can shoot cheap while practicing and end practice session with two or three mags of the regular caliber of what ever you purchase. Glad you are approaching this in this manner and GLAD you have decided to join the club. Long guns, about the same. Depends on type of use. If you cant buy a safe at least buy a proper lock box. Have fun be safe.

"It would be great to put all the armchair quarterbacks thru some shoot/dont shoot scenarios" "and armchair rambo's". I have done some competitive shooting on a local level, and again dad is an orange county sheriff. They have a mobile 40 ft trailer that is set up as a mobile training center that has a life size screen in it and reacts to specially designed laser pistols that resemble and function like a real firearm. I spent 8 hours in it one day. Very intense. One of the scenarios I went thru I was called to a business for a drunk being disorderly. I made contact and asked him to come off the dock and talk to me. He was belligerent and not complying and reached in to a brown paper bag after I asked him to keep his hands where I can see them. I drew my weapon and asked again to see his hands. He pulled his hand out of the bag and it was just donuts. My dad said why did you pull out your weapon. I said common sense says he MIGHT be reaching for a gun, I did not shoot only drew my weapon. He said you can not escalate only match force with force. He ran the scenario again, and this time I did not draw just continued with voice commands and same thing, hand in bag not complying but eventually did and yep donuts again situation resolved. He ran it a third time and this time when he reached into the bag, before I could finish telling him" sir let me see your hands" he pointed the bottom of the bag at me and it exploded, BANG, video stooped, I just got shot. Its a tough job and yes they chose it, and people make mistakes and should be held accountable for them, but not all cops are bad. Dealing with people on a daily bases is tough, and add criminal element, and drugs and alcohol to the mix, it takes a unique person, to do that job perfectly all the time.

An armed society is a polite society refers to legitimate law abiding citizens. If a criminal knows Im carrying a firearm and can legally use it they would probably think twice about robbing me. If one person had been carrying a firearm in the theater in the recent shooting, that person could have possibly changed that outcome. Same with the recent church shootings. Key phrase "street gangs"
-
agreed. I chose a dangerous job also. Cops are human beings and there for not perfect. If they do shoot and maim or kill a person and it was found not justifiable then they should be prosecuted and treated like any other criminal. An armed society is a polite society.

"No shit",easy killer! yes it should not be a death sentence for being a complete idot and as you put it "a confused dumbass on meth and alcohol". But again COMPLY. That is also why my post also said something... I dont know about, less than lethal training for the "cops that constantly fear for their life" and the" confused dumbass meth heads that are drunk", dont forget the crackheads. It should also not be a death sentence just going to work. Yes the cop chose the job over being a mechanic or a lawyer, but if no body wanted to be a cop cause its dangerous, doesnt sound like a society i want to live in, unless you let me legally police myself then all is good.

To start off, the two cops in the video were in the wrong 500 percent. That being said when a cop tells me to keep my hands up or out of my pockets I do as im asked. I was pulled over for speeding coming home from the shooting range. When the cop approached my vehicle I kept my hands on the wheel til he asked for my license...etc. As I gave him these things I told him I had fire arms on board. He asked are they yours? Are they stolen?I answered yes and no. I told him they are in the back of my truck properly stored. He asked me to keep my hands where he could see them and he opened my door and took off my seatbelt, and asked me to step out , all of this in a very calm voice and manner. After receiving a ticket(I was speeding so no complaining) he admired and complimented my 1911 that my father built for me. So if you do what they ask MOST of the time, CHANCES are you will NOT GET SHOT! Just saying.

The gun laws in UK are strict to say the least. Yet there are many in prison for life for murder. I was watching an episode of lock up UK and surprised at how many people were in prison. The popular method to commit murder seemed to be by knife. The bad people in this world will find different ways to be "bad". If you remove all guns and some a-hole wants what you have cuz he is to lazy to go earn it , or some punk gets pissed for looking at him the wrong way they will find a way, to harm you and take what they want by any means they can. It will not stop criminals from being criminals.

You hit it on the nose. If you are not complying the officer wonders why. I have seen just as many videos where officers gave some one the benefit of the doubt and then they(the officers) were shot/executed. My dad is a cop for orange county and has worked with LAPD and LASWAT. I have heard many stories of cops being killed by people not complying. One video was played about three months ago when that gentleman in Virginia or Alabama I think, was shot in the back for running from the cop after smacking the taser out of his hand(which was completely uncalled for by the cop) but cnn started showing other videos. One was about 2 years ago an officer in AZ in broad daylight was shot and killed at point blank range by the suspect as the officer calmly walked outside the residence with the suspect in front. When the officer asked if he could check his pockets the suspect reach in his coat pocket and pulled out a revolver and shot the cop in the face and neck in the blink of an eye and all of it was caught on the cops personal cam on his chest. (not comp.savy enough to attach video) Little foot note. After shooting the cop the suspects revolver was empty so he took the cops service weapon out and capped himself. More training with less than lethal force should be implemented. Might have made a big difference here as well as many others when suspects are noncompliant and POSSIBLY unarmed.

Rich Winstock Swoop Incident Cover-Up
tikl68 replied to skydived19006's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Quote; C'mon ya'all give it a rest. is the wrong mentality and its what "they" want to happen. And yes it can change by us voting, and holding people accountable for their actions, by us the people they are supposed to serve when they make a mistake. Yes we all have made mistakes and most take their medicine. Lead by example. -
Way glad to hear. Good job for asking a good question, and taking that information and practicing it. Ok that is the basics. One thing i dont hear about braked turns that i discovered is that DEPENDING on how low you are when you have to pull this tool out of your bag-o-tircks and how deep the input was,try not to let the wing back into FULL FLIGHT if you were SUPER LOW. The recovery surge is the same as a low turn. After you make the turn ease up a little then full flare. If you dont have the altitude for that then you will come pretty much straight down if input is deep, feet and knees together,PLF full flare. Triatlons are fun and pretty forgiving for the most part. Remember practice up high.
-
I agree with you, would rather see a sashay than hitting any number of obstacles found at various DZs but like you said a braked turn might be better. If done early as soon as you realize oh shit, might only need 5 degrees, which might not be drastic enough to hose your buddy behind you. I stall and collapse my tri for fun, but wouldnt dare try that on my cross fire 2 119, but even that has decent braked turn capability.
-
Hey Tred, I have 1000 + jumps on my tri 135 and 400 of those are as video for crw team. If you barely ease in to the brakes it will increase your glide path and not stop your forward flight as stated earlier in the thread even though it is an old design. If you apply very little input and your wing feels like it is stalling your brake lines might be lil on the short side. That being said there is a point where the brake input will significantly slow/stop your forward progress but not be on the verge of stalling. The line between the two is not as fine as rumored. Dont hold that for an extended period specially if you are closer to the stop moving forward input. Even though brake input is not at "stall"lenghth robbing canopy of lift for too long you will ease into a stall. As with any new maneuvers ask competent people and try them up high. Most crw dogs are familliar with tris as they are/were good for crw so they probably have experience on that wing. A lot of this depends on the length of your brake lines also. I have purposly stalled my canopy with both toggle input and rear riser input to find that point.
