  1. And TK if you want to feel safe by living where there are no guns I will bye you a plane ticket to the UK.
  2. Not that every one NEEDS to carry a gun but the right to choose to or not is important. The UK has plenty of people incarcerated for assault and murder in a country where firearm laws are very strict. Even in prison both here and in the UK inmates and staff are assaulted and murdered, again in an environment where there is no weapons. My point is that there are shit head humans on this planet that dont respect life or any thing remotely resembling respect and if they wish to do you harm or take what you have, they will find a way. Knives seem to be popular in the UK. You can beat a man to death, are you going to make bats illegal. What no more baseball! Drunk driving is one of the biggest killers in the US of innocent people, yet I dont hear any one shouting "down with breweries". And more often than not the person that dies is the innocent person NOT DUI, and the drunk survives with a head ache asking "what happened". People that use violence, poor judgement, or let their emotions control their actions are always going to be a problem in any society. My right to CHOOSE to carry/own a firearm does not make any other citizen(TK) any more in danger than he is normally in, but if you make it illegal to own/carry a firearm you are making me and every one else easier targets/victims. The 2nd and my choice dont affect or infringe on you or your safety, but your desire to take that away does affect my safety.I have attended firearms safety courses and am a responsible and proficient gun owner, and yes they are locked in a gun safe. If you look back in history one of the things that has to happen for a government or governing body/military to take control of the populous is you have to disarm them. So yes many americans prefer that not to happen.
  3. Hi skygypsie, I agree with not leaving or using scissors for broken rubber bands. I have strong enough hands to pull and break them but if they dont break off or if I am showing someone else I use the closing pin. It is not a sharp edge and it is always close by.
  4. Its a preference. I have been a packer full time for four years(Part time for 5 years) sport and tandem and now just pack my own or if the resident packer needs a hand. I prefer pull up chords for sport rigs and power tool for tandems for a couple of reasons, most of them have been brought up. I am just as quick if not quicker on a sport as someone with a tool.
  5. Ditto on the bike. I actually still ride mine here and there and at the beach for fun. It was a great back up about 15 years ago when my truck was stolen.
  6. Ya just react. Good job. Yes moving around on the plane is something I pay attention to and watch when I see people doing it. Makes me nervous. I
  7. At my home DZ the students are shown a rig/canopy and get to touch, and get the basics of how, why, and what in the FJC, and we have mock harnesses with dummy handles to pull til it becomes almost automatic, but like the others have posted, sensory overload is a concern. I teach the AFF packing course and usually cover a lot during that time. Running jokes is"your taking tickles packing course"? and the students says"ya whats wrong with that"? " Nothing, its a packing/mild rigging course, you will learn a lot". It differs DZ to DZ.
  8. When I first started doing video for my crw dogs in 2006 we experimented with trying to get my canopy(triathlon 135) to open faster right out of the door. One of the first things we tried(one of the crw dogs was and still is my rigger) was to put a mesh slider on it. OUCH!!! even with the pilot giving us a good "cut" it smacked the piss out of me. My camera went salt and pepper snow storm for a moment but you could hear me in the video get the breath knocked out of me. When I got on the ground and took my rig off I had bruise marks on my chest and shoulders from the main lift web and shit canned that idea. Since then for crw jumps I dont roll the nose, only roll the tail twice, and only single wrap my stowes, and it does just fine. Just for GP for this thread I replaced my pilot chute on that rig with a new and smaller pilot chute, about 2 years ago, but did not replace the BOC. The older pilot chute was little bigger so it fit in the BOC tighter, and the new pilote chute was new ZP and slickery, so both things combined gave me a premature deployment while in a sit fly and it still took 500 ft to open and did not hurt and have it on video( i had my rigger replace the BOC immediately after that jump) and I had used my usual freefall packing techniques. With out looking at the gear its hard to say whats going on, could be slider, could be packing techniques, not sure but I think my slider is stock, it came with the canopy when I bought it in 2005 and had 200 jumps on it.
  9. Wow quick thinking. I jump with the Wuest ways on a regular basis and we rarely have a group smaller than 25 and as a floater I often see on these and other loads with multiple floaters the people in the middle having to squeeze their way out and I am always nervous as they do about a pilot chute getting extracted as they slide their rig against other rigs/bodies and all this after a pin/pilot chute check that looks good.
  10. Agreed but even after a pin and handle check when you climb out dont show the back of your rig to the bulk head, turn to the center if you are floating, if multiple floaters are in the door way the front float and rear float should climb out first and rear float should be mindful that his pilot chute is probably in contact the bulk head, minimize movement. And think about where you are dragging your pilot chute across as you move towards the door. At least 2 of the clips where peoples pins or pilot chute snagging some part of the plane structure.
  11. Growing up on a dz as a kid in the 70's, whats up nickDg Dave teagues son here, and also as an active skydiver and working at a dz, not only do you get the questions from the whuffos/ students but you overhear the family's of tandem passengers making all kinds of comments. The breathing thing is sorta real, if your are looking down at the ground and your mouth is open the air does get forced in quicker than they can breath apparently so I would tell them look forward and close your mouth breath through your nose. One I have have not seen yet here that I have been asked is what does the helmet do for you if the parachutes dont open? and my answer, it gives the the people responding an easy way to carry your wallet, car keys, and these days your smart phone in. The other favorite answer to both parachutes failing is aim for my riggers car. Another one is when I offer to sting/shoot video for a tandem for a friend that is not by them selves and they ask if I can do it for both of them but be on the same plane. When I explain that tandems have at least a 5 second separation between exits the look of confusion is priceless, wait for it.... then the light bulb slowly comes on as one of them starts to ask cant you just....
  12. I can get my tri to open fast-er, if I dont roll the nose, but we probably have different size sliders. I have been a videographer for crew dogs since 2006 and can get it to open pretty quick right out the door sub-terminal, and I have no problem exiting 2000 ft(have actually exited at 2000 when it was allowed) cuz my tri has no bad tendencies, oh and I BASE.
  13. This is not directed at you councilman just GP info to yours and others take (op) on triathlons. I have over 1100 jumps on my tri 135 and I have never had it open fast, but I roll the twice and yep it takes about 700 ft to open and before that I put about 75 jumps on a tri 160 and same thing, but have never had it do what the OP had happen. So yes have a rigger check it out. Glad you are ok and learned a lesson with out a high tuition. And yes rear riser stalls til the canopy collapses and ride it out are a blast.
  14. We prefer to build GOOD muscle memory which is pulling both handles like we are trained. You do not want to build a habit of not pulling(bad muscle memory) your reserve handle, and relying on a piece of equipment either. You should follow through and pull your handles even if the rsl beats you to re-affirm good muscle memory. Hope this helps.
  15. Ok so the pilot of the video is the former S&TA/director that lies and klobbers spectators by ill advised swoops which i do not support, but like gowlerk said in this situation which any pilot could find themselves in IMO he did ok. All passengers lived. Exiting at 1000 ft in an engine out emergency is also not a smart idea as stated in a previous post for many reasons.
  16. I am curious what that situation has in common with BOD's? Or Sherry Butcher.
  17. Thanks for the video. Did anybody else notice the other group of wingsuit fliers flying 90 degrees about 200 feet below this group from left to right at 0.16 seconds into the video? Scary stuff.
  18. Spot on. As I have said in other threads I would cover riser maintenance when I would teach an AFF packing course. Its important for many reasons. It is in the student log book in the proficiency card. The manufacturer recommends it be done every 30 days. The material between the rings can take a set(memory) and it is not the riggers responsibility to massage the 3 rings, cleaning the cable is only done if by the rigger 6 mos if the cable is even with the rig when dropped off, and should be discussed between you and your rigger. IMO 6 mos is a little too long. The cable can also take a set and can be difficult to pull when the areas where the cable makes tight turns in the housing get stuck in that shape. I try to massage these ares also when I clean it.
  19. Very good point. I have heard that before, and it seems to be the only post that has shed light on a potential scenario of a solution.
  20. The pic you posted off vimeo is not of the one in the military suit. The pic you posted is of the zombie, he has around to 2000 skydives. The guy in the military suit is a free flyer at Elsinore. Jump numbers? Guestimation, 500-1000.
  21. I was replying to piisfishes post # 617 and just trying to shed a little light on his very good point/question. Try to keep up.
  22. So what makes the difference between having a country with lots of guns and close to no gun violence and another country with lots ofguns and lots of violence? My take on that is lots of young people inner city mostly, that for one reason or another are not being raised by parents that are teaching them decent values or to value and respect life nor are they taught to deal with issues with out using violence. So many young people whether they have parents or not, see violence being promoted/glamourized more than ever, on tv, you tube and in music. I have watched seveal episodes on "History channel" of gangland and allways hear the young gang bangers say how no one was there for them the gang is my family, or you hear a young banger boasting how his older brother, or both of his uncles are gang bangers and i want to be like them and it is excepted by these family members. The decency and fabric of society in the US compared to Switzerland is balck and white, and is part of the problem IMO. There was a time not so long ago that some one looking at you was not taken as a reason to go get a gun and shoot them, or to kill some innocent person/cop in order to be come part of a "gang", but if you did have an issue with some one and you feel like violence was the only solution, I remember many a fist fight where all anybody suffered was a fat lip or a bloody nose. This not the only crack in this whole issue but just one of the components. I am all for background checks, and a lot of other hoops I have to jump thru but then again I am a law abiding citizen that follows the rules, and is not a felon, and went thru the back ground check, and did the ten day wait period(mandatory for CA where I live) and register my guns, and dont sell them with out having a person with an FFL present. Oh and tkhayes you dont know where I was born, and its not like I had a choice in the matter, but If I dont like something I dont complain about it. I try to change it and if I cant than I will move away from it, but I am not the one complaining about the gun issues here you are. Try to be part of the solution not the problem. And that was not plaggerized, it is a saying my father has always told. me
  23. True they are meant to kill, but they are also used to feed people by hunting game, and they are also fun as target shooting. I could beat someone to death,(its been done) with a baseball bat, does that mean we should out law baseball. Im all for making it way tougher for doushe nozzles getting their hands on guns illegaly and agree there are cracks in the system, but like jbscout has said hold people accountable for their actions. I store my fire arms in a locked gun safe in a locked garage.
  24. Almost forgot thanks for standing on THE WALL devil dog.
  25. Im with you jb. Tkhayes if you dont like the laws in THIS country than MOVE OUT! or quit bitching. Skydekker, humans have been assaulting others humans since before the stone age. If I want what you have or dont like you, I will find a way to harm you and take what i want/or vengence, whether I use a IED, a sharpened stick, a boulder, sarine powder, or like jb said womens under wear. Many people have been strangled with a variety of normal everyday seemingly harmless objects. The gun laws in the UK are very strict. I have a lot of British friends and a lot of them are British military, and I have spent time in the UK, and there are plenty of people in prison for murder, it seems the popular tool over there where guns are NOT accessible is knives. I am a gun owner, my father spent 28 years in the Marine Corps and 15 years as a OC sherrif, and i shoot pretty often at my local gun range and have even done some local competitions, so there are more non LEO gun owners out there, that would have been able to have an effect on lessoning the amount of people dying, if not stopped it all together at many of these incidents, than you think. I have often asked myself, what if I was in one of these situations. And the answer is all ways the same, think and act. Yes there are far too many of these happening and I am all for making it tougher for this kind of shit to happen, but its not about gotta have my gun cuz im an Emurican, its about the government should fear the people not the people fear the government. And yes skydekker it is legal in Oregon to CCW on the grounds of the public school, but the victims were inside the buildings where it is NOT legal, so obviously criminals dont care what law you make, they are not going to follow them, whether mentally ill, or some POS street criminal. This guy if unable to obtain a gun and was serious about wanting to do this could have just as easily driven his car at full speed into class room or a group of students out side on the campus lawn. Yes I would have had NO PROBLEM hitting my target in that class room.
