Welcome Always remember, when you get where you're going, there you are!

Oh, my bad, it wasn't late 80's, I had to be 90's as I was in Orlando for a conference, thought going to the drop zones on the free afternoons was much better than golf or the other stuff they had scheduled. Went to Deland one afternoon and Z-hills the next day and did a tandem for only $80, they had just started the summer special. 13.5k from a CASA, tailgate was cool. Always remember, when you get where you're going, there you are!

Standing near the ditch at Deland in the late 80's watching some guy with a really small Sabre (97) I think, going downwind then hooking it and swooping the ditch with his body out of sight in the ditch then finishing by popping out of the ditch and land beside the ditch. Scariest looking thing I had ever seen at the time. Always remember, when you get where you're going, there you are!

Hey Jeff, just looked at your "been there" stuff and found the photo of the 'clown pattern" pc. I had one of those also, back in the late 60's. There were only two clown's in the whole state of Kansas at the time. I only weighed about 140 lbs then and could land that ole pc with the greatest of ease. Sure wish I still had it. It even kept me from freezing to death on a lonely road in January in a broken down car. Great stuff on "been there" Lee c-5835 Always remember, when you get where you're going, there you are!

Ya they sold it Ivan, but the guy that bought it on used the engine and tranny. They were asking 3k and got 2k for it. The body was not usable even after stripping out the interior. It was hilarious!! Seeing those guys gagging was over the top!!! Always remember, when you get where you're going, there you are!

IBM wouldn't let them use their name so the went ONE STEP BACKWARDS in the alphabet, not forwards. If they went forward it would of been JCN. HAL was rerun just the other night, the voice still creeps me out.......... Always remember, when you get where you're going, there you are!

Was that Tinsley Smith? If so she is married to Mike's son Chris the last I knew. They lived in Manhattan Ks while Chris went to Ks State University. Great couple. I bow hunted with Chris for awhile and got my skydiving gear from Chris. They moved back to Georgia after Chris graduated. Always remember, when you get where you're going, there you are!

Scratch, were you on that first 8 way too? When I was in Cal in the Navy back in the 60's you and Garth were pretty famous, it is so cool to have you guys posting. Always remember, when you get where you're going, there you are!

Hey Garth, weren't you on the first 8 way ever completed? Seems to me I remember a picture of that 8 way and you were the one with his heels almost on his butt. Glad you found DZ.com. Be sure to relate some stories frome the old days for us to enjoy. Always remember, when you get where you're going, there you are!

Django became Flite Concepts with Mike Fury still with the company only as tech advisor. I don't know is he would be willing to tell the story or not, but you can reach him at Altico (Dolphin rigs) in Florida. He is a very personable guy, best customer service I have ever experienced from any company. His whole family skydives except his wife. Great people! Knew his son Chris while he was in Manhattan Ks and bowhunted with him. Always remember, when you get where you're going, there you are!

Jump #2, streamer on a 28 foot tu7. had a borrowed belly wart reserve with a pilot chute (shouldn't have had one), reserve cleared the main and all I saw was a flash of white, main slowly unwound and I landed in 12 foot tall sugar cane. That was in 1966 in the Phillipines. Was a quite a chore getting both canopies down off that damn cane. Always remember, when you get where you're going, there you are!

I met Smitty at Woody Underwood's DZ at Maize Ks (near Wichita) in I think 69. He made his last solo jump (I think) the weekend I was there. He had his old rig with him for all to peruse. What a deal that was. All the lines were tied to an old Ford steering wheel. He was an amazing guy. A true pioneer, and could still party hard at the end of the day. I sure was glad to meet him. I watched Mike's King air in Ellijay Ga. a few years back and timed it from rotation (just lifting off) till he cut the engines on jump run at 14000 ft and it was excatly 7 minutes!!! and he beat all the jumpers to the ground. He removed the original 550 hp engines and put 750 hp engines on it. Mike can fly the living crap out of that thing!!!!! Always remember, when you get where you're going, there you are!

Hell yes, you are a skydiver. You voluntarily jumped even if was tandem. You are one of us forever!!!! Never mind all the other stuff in this thread. I laid out of skydiving for 30+ years but I was still a skydiver, just not current........my .02 Always remember, when you get where you're going, there you are!

Hey Jeff, was your paracommander pattern called the "Clown" I couldn't tell from the picture of you going into the pool, looks like a lot of green. The pattern was red, white, blue, black, green, and gold on the clown. I had one from '67 till '70. Wish I had never sold it. I was in a Pioneer piggyback with a 26 foot triconical reserve. Always remember, when you get where you're going, there you are!

Don't worry, the student thing passes quickly. Welcome to the addiction! By the way, is MRVS open during the week, or is it weekends only? Always remember, when you get where you're going, there you are!

I saw Steve Snyder jump one of his Para Planes at Lakewood NJ in 1969. It was a hop and pop with another guy under a ParaCommander with an 8mm movie camera. That Paraplane literally flew circles around the PC. Steve flew that thing a complete 360 around the peas from a very low altitude and then tippy toed the landing in the peas. I tried to ask him about it and he wouldn't even acknowledge that I was there. Never bought anything built by him. Hmmmm, wonder why? This was when they were trying all kind of ways to slow the openings so they could go to terminal with them. Sliders weren't invented yet. My first 15 or so jumps were out of a Phillipine Air Force C-47 and it took like 10 fo those to figure out that if you pivoted of your right foot out the door, you could actually leave stable. What ever happened to the DC3 called Sugar Alpha that flew in Georgia in the 80's? Always remember, when you get where you're going, there you are!

Davinci Code is the best book I have read in a long time. Couldn't put it down!!!! Always remember, when you get where you're going, there you are!

Second jump 1966 in the Phillipines out of a Phillipine Air Force C-47 over Canlubang which is a huge sugar plantation with 2 grass strips. My buddy goes out first and I follow, seems like I am going a lot faster than on the first jump, so I look up at a streamering TU7 and the lines are twisting down towards the risers and my buddy's canopy is getting real small real quick. I go for the belly wart reserve borrowed from the club, throw the handle away and let the bungies open the pack. Wham! Am under a small white round of unknown size. It had a pilot chute in it which wasn't supposed to be there for students. I saw the flash of white after the damn thing opened!! As I am hanging from the d-rings on the front, the main starts to fill with air and untwisting. Eventually landed in 15 foot tall sugar cane with both canopies laying on top of the cane. Third jump was clear and pull as I had shown I could pull a rip cord. Sure was exciting!!!!!!!!!!!!! Always remember, when you get where you're going, there you are!

I read that Mad Dog had hit some power lines on a base jump, or something similar, and that he was back making a few jumps. I am sure he would help our friend try to get in the air again. Power lines are not a real good thing to land in. Had a friend in Ca back in the 60's whose nickname was Stash, asked him about it one day and he said it was really Saint Ash but got shortened to Stash. Got the name landing in power lines and almost becoming ashes. Hell of a jumper, was the first jumper I ever saw use a bag for his canopy, and it was a paracommander!!! Always remember, when you get where you're going, there you are!
