Funny I did most of these things with one of Mikes kids.... So maybe it does not work that well....In fact I had not been around drugs till I was at a DZ..... I have many good stories about drugs and all kinds of illegal stuff. All from DZ's. Sure, I've seen it around Dz's too, but minus the peer pressure. A simple No, and it seems to disappear from view. Sure, you know the ones that do it, but when you make it plainly known you don't want it, and want it nowhere near you, it stays away. I don't have that kind of control over my own life, much less my childrens, anywhere else. Just being at the DZ isn't going to be enough, of course. It takes parenting. But the right parenting, along with the right attitude and atmosphere can make the difference. Since you say you did most of that with one of Mike's kids, may I ask who initiated the contact? Doesn't really matter, one initiated, and one didn't say no. Result? Both guilty. If you offered to the kid, shame on you, big time. If the kid offered to you, just exactly why did you accept? nice way to set an example, Ron. And if, by some strange chance, "most of those things with one of mikes kids" doesn't include drugs, is there a reason you felt the need to drop your maturity level for the rest? Mailbox baseball? Truancy? Drugs? This from a person who seems to know how to stop hook turn incidents? The point I'm trying to make, Ron, is the DZ is in general a better place for adolescents than pretty much anywhere else. It's your life, live it! It's not so much having then do something else, it's knowing where they are, and what they are doing. Despite what you may think, they will end up doing whatever they want, it's human nature. I like the idea of having them with me. I like the idea of them being interested in a legal sport, instead of anything illegal, be it drugs, truancy, mailbox baseball, ect. If they want to jump, or even be AT the DZ, they need to perform to a certain standard. Slack off, and it's no longer an option. I gave them an objective, and guess what? It's working. My oldest (almost 13) already has his sights set on ROTC, and he wants to fly in the Air Force. He has learned enough to know that cracking a cocky attitude will get him nowhere, and even attempting anything on a lower legal or moral plane will get him the serious smackdown. He knows if he slacks though, he can always cook for the GI's. It's your life, live it! Karma RB#684 "Corcho", ASK#60, Muff#3520, NCB#398, NHDZ#4, C-33989, DG#1

Technically, there is no real legal requirement. The 16 year age limit you hear about is the USPA recomendation. This recomendation is why the WFFC couldn't get a Group Membership in '02. It was widely known that M. Mullins would be there with kids. Under age, no GM. It's not illegal. Tandems are another story though. It happens way more than solos, but is federally regulated. Personally, until almost 2 years ago, I was on the side of most, saying why would I even let my kids jump before they were 18. I wouldn't. Then I sat down and talked with Mike (Mullins) at a little boogie up here in Wisconsin during a weather hold. He made one very good point. It's the weekend. You are at the DZ. Where is your son and/or daughter? Adreneline is just as addictive as crack, weed, cocaine, lsd, ect. Where do YOU want your kids to be? At the dz with you, or out on the streets with friends that may or may not be a good influence? I have to say, he changed my mind, and my kids are starting to come with me. The 2 oldest learn to pack this year, and may start jumping in a few years, depending on alot of factors, such as school progress, maturity, and general attitude. It's your life, live it! Lots of good advice here, but let me add one more bit. Check the wire gauge size at the breaker in the box. If it's on a 20 amp breaker as you say, it should be 12 gauge, but it may be 10. If it's 14, change to a 15 amp breaker. OK, now for the fun part. You can put lights and outlets on the same circuit, but remember this little bit of info: The size of wire in your main breaker panel must be continued for the entire circuit. If it starts with 12 gauge, ALL must be 12 gauge. Same for 10 or 14. There is NO loophole around this. Trust me, I just got nailed on it myself in a recent inspection of my remodel. It was cheap to run the wires. The expensive part was pulling down a section of wall to replace ONE FRIGGIN WIRE!!! It's not that it was too small, it just wasn't the same as the rest on the circuit.
