  12. Interesting thread- Being an A&P/IA that works on Otters, a pilot that fly’s a few, and a specialist who is rated in 4 Non-Destructive testing methods I must add my 2 cents. Rust is a natural state that all unprotected ferrous metal will develop into if left in the unprotected state- hence paint. The Otter main gear legs are inspected via dye penetrant, eddy current, magnetic particle, or X-Ray every so many cycles (I will have this number in the morning). A visual inspection can only pick up discrepancies that are not hidden by the paint, or those that have worked their way though the paint. All Otter main gear legs are coated on their interior by a tar substance upon refurbishment/inspection to prevent moisture ingress and the subsequent corrosion products. As the good Doctor Kallend said- we need a better picture, and a metallurgical analysis of the material would be beneficial as well, maybe it was flawed from the start. Remember that aircraft that went down in Sioux City Iowa due to a failed hydraulic system caused by a compressor turbine disk that had a metallurgical flaw from the start? Blame will place its self upon investigation- just give it time. A crack that would cause catastrophic failure such as this does not have to be that big- until it fails. Chris
  13. I heard the left landing gear failed while the Frankenotter was flying a boogie up in Canada this weekend? Can anybody confirm or deny this fact? Got any pictures? Chris
  14. Phree- You sound very interested in cutting down SDC and it appears you have a great interest in the "drug" thing. Leads one to wonder.... Let it go man--- As for anyone who wants extra altitude at summerfest- the boobies always work, but if you are lacking in that area (meaning your a dude) I always appreciate a good Captains and Coke or an Amstel or a... I'll be flying the fast otter~ Chris Strenge It's good to be the pilot.
  15. That was an interesting load. In the situation descried above by Chris I was the pilot flying and I considered it a non event, after all we are VFR and I saw him in plenty of time, only problem was the controller did not. A 747 at 12,000 going west is not a common occurrence here as they usually head east into Chicago. I was informed to hold/drop at or below 12,000 because traffic was holding at the binky intersection (just north east and not an uncommon occurrence) at and above 13,000. The 747 was cleared to hold at binky on a different frequency at 12,000, the altitude we were dropping at. After seeing it I held the jumpers till the 747 was passed and continued as normal. At no time was anybody in any danger and nothing came of it, however after the controller who mistakenly forgot to tell me that the aircraft was holding at 12 instead of 13 got off work he stopped by SDC to personally apologize to me. This was very much appreciated, even though in my mind it was a non event. After taking the controller on an observer ride, which he enjoyed very much, we ate, drank a few beers, and had a great chat. The controllers here are doing their best to keep traffic separation, both IFR and VFR, but we are all human and make mistakes, by having them come out and see our operation, fly with us, and talk ~ this is how progress is really made. In regards to Roger or any other DZO having a policy of us (its employees) talking to the media- I find it irrelevant to our drop zone. Anyone here will tell it like it is, Roger knows this and it is the way it should be- we tell it like it is~ nothing to hide. I have said my peace~ any questions? It's good to be the pilot.
  16. Hooking low sucks- been there--- thats why I fly more than I jump. if you want to hook it, do it right, have a clear atea to pull out of, dont hook with no out half way though it- it can kill ya. Play hard~! Chris It's good to be the pilot.

    Water kills

It was an unfortunate accident indeed and one can only wonder why a person would try something such as this that is clearly beyond his abilities. I was flying the plane that Ron jumped from, all of us aboard watched as the two before him splashed, and then he, which to say the least was huge, even from our view at ten grand. After watching the video later that night it was apparent that he came in way to low, almost hitting the deck with his feet and never flaring, not even at a foot over the water and a 45 degree angle. Blue skies Ron~ Chris- It's good to be the pilot.
