  1. If anyone wants to warm up for high-altitude, come out to Colorado for a weekend and do some jumps with us. Both Brush and Mile-Hi normal exit altitude is 17,500 ASL. It can be a bit chilly up there in December, though Trapped on the surface of a sphere. XKCD
  2. Ya know - I think this definitely exposes a void in the wave of skydiving videos. Even the safety ones don't seem to focus on this crucial aspect of our sport. I believe that canopy control and landings are the most likely place for new students to get hurt, but I don't think I've seen a video that just covers this topic. Anyone want to make one? Oh, and Ripper - keep asking questions. It's good for you! Trapped on the surface of a sphere. XKCD
  3. For the record, I was not thinking that way I should've known that other skydivers were Edit - I think I'll go delete that post before it gets me into big trouble. Trapped on the surface of a sphere. XKCD
  4. I've jumped both in comparable sizes, and I own a Tri. They are both great canopies, and have very similar flight and landing characteristics. Advantages of Spectre: 1. Better resale value 2. Opens slightly better 3. Flares slightly better Advantages of a Triathalon: 1. Pack easier (not the ones made in the last year, or new ones, which will be made of true ZP). 2. Less expensive Recommend if you get a Tri to have your rigger sew a pocket on the slider - it will more than make up for the difference in openings. Trapped on the surface of a sphere. XKCD

  6. Six us were out last week, and everyone but RkyMtnHigh was wearing one - we decided we have to make one for her. It's almost like getting tattooed
  7. 1. Big plastic tarp that you can stake down on the ground and pack on. It will make you popular 2. Now matter how much cash you bring, you will need more. Trapped on the surface of a sphere. XKCD
  8. I find this effective when teaching the AFF class too. The big red-haired freak that acts like Jim Carrey on speed. Gets the students excited about what kind of future they have Trapped on the surface of a sphere. XKCD
  9. Ego surfing? Personally, when I get a phone book, I check to make sure my name is not there. My step-mother used to work for a telephone survey company, and they got most of their names right out of the phonebook. Of course, I'm on the new no-solicitation list, and I haven't gotten a single telemarketer call yet. The next thing I do is call the phone book companies (all three of them!) and tell them to come pick their phone book back up and stop delivering it. I hate phone books! 10. It may be "better" plastic, but I'll stick with my aluminum ones from Square One. Never had to use it, and I hope I never do. Trapped on the surface of a sphere. XKCD

  13. Ya - my D license just got posted in this month's issue - I think I got that about 3 months ago. Edit - just checked, my D was submitted August 25th, and printed in the December issue. I know they had a LOT of applicants for the D before the new rules went into effect. Trapped on the surface of a sphere. XKCD
  14. Let's see - I see hookitt on page 20, and B^2 on page 103. Quade gets points for photographs on pages 35 and 43, and Kevin922 wrote the wingsuit article on page 50. Who else?

  16. I attended University with plenty of Iraqi students (my school was known for petroleum engineering)- a lot of them were very capable programmers. I'm sure many of them went back to Iraq and are now working as software developers. It's not easy writing paralleled algorithms, for sure, but I think there are plenty of Western-educated Iraqis that are capable of it. Trapped on the surface of a sphere. XKCD
  17. The concept of the "supercomputer" has been obsolete for more than a few years. It's cheaper and more reliable to network "normal" microprocessors together into clusters that have just as much or more power - that's all this "supercomputer" is anyway. One project I worked on in the early 90s had an Elexi supercomputer to do 6-DOF spacecraft simulations that cost $1 mil in maintenance every year, and took up an entire classified lab space. We replaced it with one Sun and one SG machine that did more than the supercomputer at 1/1000th the operating cost. If Saddam, or any terrorist wants a supercomputer, all they have to do is a little research on the Internet, get a dozen or more networked PCs and write some software.
