It's not that long ago you couldn't marry outside your race in much of the USA. Such bigoted views now seem like an anachronism. No doubt 50 years from now our children will feel the same way about the laws we're now dismantling. Same-sex marriage is going to require some software to be rewritten. Plural marriage would require a LOT of software to be rewritten, and updates to various tax codes and things that assume that can't happen. From an IT perspective I say BRING IT ON! The updating will keep me in business until I hit retirement age, and beyond! I'm trying to teach myself how to set things on fire with my mind. Hey... is it hot in here?

7 Reasons the TSA Sucks (A Security Expert's Perspective)
FlyingRhenquest replied to ryoder's topic in Speakers Corner
Just flew to Argentina (and back) and was "TSA Pre-screened" for some unknown reason. Didn't have to remove shoes, belt or sweater, or remove anything from my carry-on bag. No full-body scan either. ????? They're watching you! I'm trying to teach myself how to set things on fire with my mind. Hey... is it hot in here? -
You just described what happened the first time I stepped into a wind tunnel wearing a jumpsuit with booties. Would pay to see video of that... I'm trying to teach myself how to set things on fire with my mind. Hey... is it hot in here?

Yup, you can actually fly pretty well with just your body. About 80% of my skydives have been tracking jumps. But it's kind of hard to talk about tracking with someone who has never done a skydive and may not have even read that much about it. I'm also not entirely sure I'd have handled my first wingsuit jump as well as I did without the additional tunnel time learning how to fly my body. As it was, it felt very natural, but it's kind of an intimidating thing, restricting your range of movement as the wingsuit does. On my first flight with it, the thought popped into my head almost immediately that I was good with this but I definitely saw why they wanted you to wait at least 200 skydives to get into it. Some very scary stuff can happen on a wingsuit jump, and you need to be able to remain calm and deal with such emergencies. I'm trying to teach myself how to set things on fire with my mind. One step at a time. Find a local dropzone, talk to them about training, sign up and give them a large briefcase full of cash. Pretty much everything in this sport involves you giving someone a large briefcase full of cash. I'm trying to teach myself how to set things on fire with my mind. Hey... is it hot in here?

By far the easiest thing to do, if he's not too picky about the format, is rip it to video files and put it up on youtube. Just be sure to make the video private and stuff. Youtube also limits you to 10 minutes of video unless you fill out a form promising to not to post pirated content on the site. If he (or you) don't want to deal with the magical incantations involved, you can still rip the files to video, put them on a thumb drive and send that to him. Microsoft movie maker can be downloaded free from Microsoft's site and can rip unencrypted DVDs quite easily and also seems to be able to deal with at least some encrypted DVDs without a lot more trouble. If he is too picky about the format, well burning a DVD that will actually play in a DVD player is pretty esoteric. You could probably find some software that can do it, though. Last time I did it was several years ago on a Linux machine, from the command line. It was interesting from a technical perspective but way more trouble than it was worth. I can't imagine any skydiver freaking about that... + 1 But I still wanna do it anyway. It would seem there is not to much you don't want to do.

Seriously, pay attention when you drive
FlyingRhenquest replied to CanuckInUSA's topic in The Bonfire
Obviously driving's just way too easy. It should be mandatory that any vehicle sold be on a knife's edge of going of the road and/or exploding, with only constant driver attention keeping that from happening. I think that'd make it a lot safer for everyone! I bet it wouldn't be too hard to program the steering system to randomly steer to the right (or left in the UK) with a certain random force, requiring constant driver input to keep it on the road. Distracted drivers would rapidly remove themselves from the road. Then all you have to do is figure out how to keep them from plowing into pedestrians... I'd like to learn a thing or two about spotting
FlyingRhenquest replied to SoCalJumper's topic in Safety and Training
On most of my skydives, I'm getting out toward the end of all the groups. I'm usually either tracking or doing a high pull (12K hop and pop :-) Tracking kind of forces you to spot since the Pilot's spot is really only good for people who are planning to go straight down (And the Pilot's spot always seems to be excellent for those jumps.) Tracking does have the advantage that you're going to your spot as much as it's coming to you. Being later in the load order (ever since that ONE guy...) is nice, since no one's anxious to get out at that point. All the belly jumpers have already left and the wingsuit guys are always taking a farther spot than I am. I'm trying to teach myself how to set things on fire with my mind. I put a jazz station on my radio alarm clock because it's in the sweet spot of annoying enough to get me up while not being so annoying that I get up too quickly and then go back to bed. They've started playing Christmas music, and I've discovered that nothing gets me out of bed to turn the radio off faster than Christmas music. Not even the AM gospel channels see THAT kind of response. I'm trying to teach myself how to set things on fire with my mind. Hey... is it hot in here?

People are different and you can't really draw any conclusions from that. If someone's made it to 500 jumps in the first place they're in a minority of the people who started out skydiving. The USPA was complaining the other day that the student retention rate for tandems is less than 1%. I don't think it's a lot better for AFF, either -- I've only seen one other guy from my class of 12 or 13 in the last year, and I don't think he's got his A license yet. My observation of my own abilities and the skydivers I jump with is that the more skydives you can make in a given period, the more you seem to improve your technical skills in that period. Tunnel time also seems to have a fairly dramatic impact on your ability to fly your body. But overall I think jump numbers (below several thousand anyway) and time in the sport are not particularly good measures of a skydiver's ability. This is a pretty good example of that. I'm trying to teach myself how to set things on fire with my mind. Hey... is it hot in here?

You can do that by jumping every chance you get. Don't put it off any longer! The more you jump, the more confidence you will build for your self. Hey, best wishes to you for everything you do! Take care, be safe. Best- Richard IHS Yeah, I always had better results when I did more than one jump in a day. The first one kind of woke me up and then everything on the next couple would be much easier. I'm trying to teach myself how to set things on fire with my mind. Hey... is it hot in here?

I did tunnel time between AFFs 2 and 3 and I think two more sessions before I got my A license. It really does wonders for the sort of problems you're describing. It forces you to keep your sliding under control and it's much easier to tell if you have a slight turn. You can target those specific problems and talk to your tunnel instructor about fixing them. It's a lot nicer to do tunnel time in the winter when it's freaking miserable out than it is to go do a jump. Should be less expensive per minute of freefall, too. You don't need to do an awful lot of time in there, even 6 minutes will do you some good. I started my AFF July 7 of last year, and did my first tunnel minutes on July 7. I went back on July 16 and again in August. I'm still on coaching in August and still pretty shaky, but you can see I am getting a little better. There's a pretty significant difference in my control from my first one in July. By the time October rolls around, I have nearly 50 skydives and about 20 minutes in the tunnel and am starting to look like I know what I'm doing. I've got about 3 hours of time in there now, nearly doubling my total freefall time. I'm a little wobbly when I went in November of this year, but you can see I have much better control over my fall rate, can do side slides without thinking about it, and he's showing me yet another way to back and forward slide. Every time I go in there it seems like he's showing me another one. I told him I didn't want to rush into freeflying because I wanted to be really solid on my belly first, and he's found more than enough to keep me busy with that. I feel like some of the stuff I've been learning in there (Mantis position and all the sliding techniques) probably would have been glossed over if I'd gone right to back-flying. I do practice flying on my back later in that video and you can see I still need more practice at it. You can also tell that I'm still a total noob. That last video shows a pretty decent continuum of experience if you look at all three people in there. It's Sheila's (Yellow jumpsuit) first time, Livy has around 60 skydives and I think 10-20 minutes of tunnel time, I (ninja boots) have 200 skydives and 3 hours of tunnel time and my instructor's on a freefly team at the local DZ and has probably thousands of hours of tunnel time. If you want to fly like Peter Pan, moonlight as a tunnel instructor! I think what I'm telling you is go get in the tunnel! I'm trying to teach myself how to set things on fire with my mind. My archetypical example of the kind of porn that's available on the Internet is "Live Goat Porn." When I'm talking to the uninitiated and want to provide an example that is most likely beyond any idea of what they had imagined was out there, that's what I use. I was actually about a day off registering livegoatporn.com -- I checked one day and it was free. I slept on it and decided I should probably register it, but by that point some domain squatter had already taken it. That would have been an awesome mail domain for the ol' business cards... So, um, what were we talking about agian? Oh yeah, boobies! I'm trying to teach myself how to set things on fire with my mind. Hey... is it hot in here?

I sure don't know what the coach was thinking or whether his own fall rate was messed up. Bu one bad jump with one AFF-I and they are all useless? But the way you presented the issue, had the coach been curly haired and Jewish, you might have warned us that one should never jump with curly haired Jewish coaches because those people always screw things up... I didn't say "useless" nor did I intend to suggest that. I apologize to all AFF-Is that have not grabbed the student on a coached jump, and hung on like a pitbull. Did you ask him why he did that? If one of my coaches had latched on to me like a pit bull for an entire freaking jump, I'd want to know why. I'm trying to remember if I ever had a coach or AFF jump that didn't have a debriefing. Don't think I did. Even now if I jump with others we go over the jump after we landed. I'm trying to teach myself how to set things on fire with my mind. Hey... is it hot in here?

Gun Buyback - and totally missing the point!

Dig up google maps or google earth and check out the DZ from the air. You might also want to start a checklist of things to go over when you get there (Load order, separation, jump run direction, landing pattern, pull altitudes, obstacles, landmarks for spotting, etc) so you can check stuff off as you go over them and make sure you didn't forget anything you wanted to cover. If they cover anything you didn't have on your checklist, add it for the next new DZ! Oh and don't forget to bring beer... I'm trying to teach myself how to set things on fire with my mind. Best skydiving location
FlyingRhenquest replied to scott999's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Maybe Hawaii? I haven't been to a DZ there but used to live there and recall the climate was usually pretty nice. I assume after a while you'd get used to high wind landings. I'm trying to teach myself how to set things on fire with my mind. Hey... is it hot in here? -
Predicting cloud coverage
FlyingRhenquest replied to mattwht's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
No! You go to dropzone! Waiting around for 6 hours and not getting a jump in is all part of growing up! Don't forget to have a beer with the instructors and other skydivers. And help to put the planes away. Remember, a bad day at the dropzone, even one where you didn't actually get to jump, is still better than a good day at work.
