  1. Kid, I made that one obvious! For a reason.... C Glad you noticed. But what do I know, "I only have one tandem jump."
  2. Here is the pertinent section from the FAR's: "(c) Medical certificate. (1) A person may serve as a required pilot flight crewmember of an aircraft only if that person holds the appropriate medical certificate issued under part 67 of this chapter, or other documentation acceptable to the FAA, that is in that person's physical possession or readily accessible in the aircraft. Paragraph (c)(2) of this section provides certain exceptions to the requirement to hold a medical certificate." This is from 61.3 I don't think that TI's are required to have it in their possession. But some of the states are getting a little militant about some of the individual state requirements. I'm not arguing with ya, just that being forewarned is forearmed in case something happens which IMO is the real issue and enforceable after the fact. A TI is not just like any crew or Pilot and I'm having a hard time believing that having a medical in or not in your possession or readily accessible is something that any LEO can enforce or even demand. Asking for it is another story... C
  3. Here is a link that makes for interesting reading: III class guide for Practitioners Hot off the press,... Dec, 2013 Now don't take me the wrong way on this one, I'm not flaming anyone here, BUT: This is the kind of question that attracts attention and I would ask why do you want to know this? Because this could be perceived as an attempt to thwart what is basically self policing requirements. "They" are not cops wanting to enforce anything and as such we all walk a tight line with the FAA and the public, and state and Local,...etc..... Bottom line is if we can't "police" ourselves, there are agencies only all too willing to step in and charge us to "Protect" the public. I suspect what you mean is there a way to increase the workload of the USPA Staff to make it more convenient for the members to not have to worry about multiple pieces of paper, especially in this day and age. That's a good point and you should bring it up with your local regional Rep. You would think with all of this computer stuff something like that would be easy enough to implement? C (sarcasm alert)>>>>> Perhaps even our photo's on our licenses? But what do I know, "I only have one tandem jump."
  4. Nope. You PM'd, I replied. I just don't want continue to have a private conversation with you. Public is fine. Then perhaps you could explain why and where you get your information? You made this statement: I'm trying to make a point about making wild ass guesses. So I guess that was a guess? I can understand reacting to what you perceive is some kind of personal attack, it's not BTW. But quite frankly I know I jumped more than 6 times. So how do you justify making your assumptions? And why would you do that. And why would anyone argue against getting strange gear checked? I re-read this whole thread that Paul basically started flaming and truthfully I can't see where my rhetoric is taken as gospel? And even if my tone was the "law" what were the responses? I expect a little more tolerance for varying opinions especially from you. Regardless of the package. The others are just children that don't know any better, with time I fully expect them to mature and be a little more tolerant of others viewpoints, but I know that you know better,.... C But what do I know, "I only have one tandem jump."
  5. Even I stand I awe of the reference you just made about the old wrinkled ones, Not touching that with a ten foot pole!
  6. Judging from post history, the guy did about a half dozen jumps a year or so ago and then got skeered and decided to lurk here being a jerk instead of jumping. Not quite, but since you asked: Your so sweet!
  7. I just wanted to add I have meet more than a few jumpers that have fallen in love with this stuff. But I have to tell ya, years and differing dz's round you out. Many of these high first year jumpers have serious gaps in their knowledge. This is a concern. I do want to mention and add something here that is missing IMO and that is a lot of this in order to fully understand, are things you need to learn for yourself. There are generally lots of fine stuff coming from chuck martin and airtwardo, and DSE, and a zillion others, and they all love to do everything and anything they can to keep you current and safe. But until YOU actually get it, you don't. (rhetorical, YOU) Keep at it, stay current, learn, be humble,...all good stuff. I think skydiving is a skill that needs to be practiced. The less current you are the more concern I have. Some people listen and apply, some can't , some won't. Stay current. (Period) C I'm envious of any fun jumper that can crank out 500 in a year! Or over five years. Either way that's awesome!
  8. I hope Labrys can take a joke,(She is a bit of an inspiration.) cause it was a bit of a dig on anyone or everyone who advances WAG's , however well intentioned they may be. I was trying to stay on target, and frequently I leave out a lot of stuff and go straight to the answere so to speak. Geneerally someone who posts a lot of pictures has some pride in their equipment or they are a reseller of stuff they have found. Either way the most important point I am making is to raise your game, learn before you buy, and don't get scammed. Because there are in fact a lot of internet scams that have hurt a lot of people. C I don't know if the seller is legit or not, quite frankly I don't care. It's more important to realize the advice proffered here is somewhat tainted by certain individuals trying to make a buck and their interests come first. All you have to do is start a conversation about Tandems, or drop zones that are fiercely competing for students, sky ride , groupon, and a whole host of places with agendas, to see individuals defending their turf, so to speak. I go ballistic when I see certain advertisements being promoted as free advice. I have been around long enough to see major changes in skydiving. And what I see is a rather large bunch of people, getting their ratings for the sole purpose of cash. While I understand their love and reasons for doing this, this has in fact created unintended consequences in basically a volunteer organization, which is what the USPA is, but it's controlled by all of those that have their agenda's first. My focus is upon the fun jumper and trying to understand the complexities of running a drop zone subsidized by tandems and students. And you should be aware that I am not signaling anyone out here, there is a really big empty hole of knowledge by many gear purchasers. We do in fact need to stick together on some of this which I believe is the OP's intent. But a lot of things you need to be able to figure out for yourself. V But what do I know, "I only have one tandem jump."
  9. Your a right Wally, you are. I used to love those tapes. Do you really think that all of FLA is zoned out? DeLand can be tough, that I can see But some of the other smaller club hang outs are ok, as is Sevierville with Gary?? C Too much focus on green IMO, killin everyone... But what do I know, "I only have one tandem jump."
  10. I didn't berate anyone. C And I am more than happy to answer or clarify anything questionable. I suppose the real question is: Why would people pass on answering anything they thought questionable?
  11. I think you've avoided the direct questions I've asked. I'll ask them again: Do you jump? If so, where? How long have you jumped for? How many jumps have you made? I think your missing the point son,.... I'm trying to get you to think for yourself. C
  12. There is also this The shape of Things to Come if your interested in this kind of thing. A little dry, but a worthwhile alternate perspective on H.G. Wells, worth a read. C Another veersion But what do I know, "I only have one tandem jump."
  13. This makes me wonder whether you are a jumper at all. The facebook page I posted (which came up when I googled the phone number in the craigslist ad) went to "Square 1 Jewelry". Most jumpers I know would recognize the name "Square 1." Then again, maybe that's just a west coast thing. So, direct questions: do you jump? If so, where? How long have you jumped for? How many jumps have you made? I am trying to point something out here, and in a sense your making my point for me,... is square one jewelry, on Facebook, the same as The Square 1 Gear store???? Or do you just accept everything anyone says? C It's a fairly simple question.
  14. Thanks Walt, that's great! C But what do I know, "I only have one tandem jump."

  17. Ditto some of the already mentioned info. But how much time do you have? http://www.doleta.gov/usworkforce/whatsnew/eta_default.cfm?id=6035 I have heard of a few creative individuals navigating through this hell hole and being successful. For some really off the wall courses and training things. Mostly for EPA type jobs, but it all depends upon how you word your application, when you get to that stage. C And there is this: http://www.careeronestop.org/ReEmployment/Veterans/EducationandTraining/back-to-school.aspx The story I heard was that they were able to put together a "certificate" education package for the "Aircraft Inspector" position / classification. But be warned navigating this is not for the feint of heart as a lot of work has to be done solely by you. But what do I know, "I only have one tandem jump."

I just wanted to publicly thank NWflyer for her book recommendation. Of course Amy is my ex wife Thanks Krisanne It will be a movie soon. Speaking of movies the book also reminds me of the movie Don Jon (2013,) my ex was in that as well.... C But what do I know, "I only have one tandem jump."
  19. I am not saying that "every sale" should go thru a middle man. I am promoting escrow service, via, individuals such as yourself, and Chuting Star, and the gear shop at Perris, etc.,. I am promoting that anyone who is interested in purchasing gear, in this scam environment, do what they can to protect their investment and safety. The internet is full of people that will sell anything to make a buck as you are well aware. Here on Dropzone.com we have a rather large section devoted to scams and again a rather large number of victims that have been scammed. I'm not the one who thought this sale is a scam, the OP was the one, I read what they posted and viewed the link, I still think it's a scam, and if it isn't I would have serious doubts about purchasing this dusty appearing equipment, how old? with 35 jumps and other wild estimates. I am promoting a thorough inspection before cash exchanges hands. I do believe I am as well as other very experienced jumpers have a valid point on this regard. C Yes, it's a bit of a rhetorical question. But it's a difficult decision for those jumpers that are not near a gear store or aware of all the fine, although sometimes obtuse individuals that purchase and sell gear. While I fully agree about personal choice, I also believe that as a purchaser of skydiving gear I have an unalienable right to have it inspected before I plunk down my hard earned cash. Something I learned once from the owner of Neiman Marcus: "your in retail, you take their money, you take their shit,..." Somebody tells me that they have fully inspected their gear, especially skydiving stuff, it don't mean shit to me! If I can't inspect it or they refuse to escrow, then I move on, but that's me,... This isn't about you, this isn't about me, this is about spotting shitty gear, not getting scammed, and paying it back to all the newbies that don't know any better. This is what I see in this posting: 1. The OP has a concern about an ad in Craig's list, I feel his concerns are just and warranted! 2. Not a jumper selling gear, but a Facebook jewelry site, which means most likely this gear is from a storage unit, sold at auction, and it has been sitting around for the last ten years, baking in the hot sun. And yes that is just a guess. 3. JVX says he knows the person. 4. Another well meaning individual says basically he thinks it's ok, he has no basis to make that claim. 5. No one has forwarded any information on how to protect yourself from scams or ensure that if in fact this is auction gear, how to inspect it. You are perfectly able to do this, but for some reason have chosen not to? 6. Anyone check on the serial number by calling Aerodyne? There are lots of things people can do to protect themselves, when I see so many blindly supporting the legitimacy, or not, this kind of irks me...but that's just me. I have a hard time with language, thanks for putting up with my bad English and spelling, I am getting better.
  20. If I have said something that is incorrect feel free to improve upon what I have said. Other than that perhaps many should know you do a thriving business on e-bay. Bypassing other riggers and selling equipment that you alone have given your stamp of approval. I would imagine if every buyer of equipment wanted to run it by their own rigger, that would really cramp your sales??? That's a question? C I think the kid has a valid point wanting to protect other jumpers. He took the time to post the ad, and quite frankly I agree that it smells. No harm in checking serial numbers, which are missing in this Craig's listing. Is it your ad? I will say that yo have a great e-bay rating however: http://www.ebay.com/usr/likestojump . I am answering the OP's question. His name is Pete. He like many people who are interested in purchasing gear and actually helping others avoid making bad decisions and or getting burned by a scam is doing something other than promoting their own business. I am well aware of Paul's reputation, but this thread isn't about Paul and his business. It's turning into supporting those who run a business and the fact that they don't like all of the hoops like an escrow service because of the extra work involved. There is also the fact that many people don't like private sales because of the risk involved and the many, many scams which have actually taken place here on this internet forum. And of course we have a number of rigs that disappear from unlocked cars and more than a few rigs that disappear from supposedly safe Dz's. Sorry to ramble on,... but your either for skydivers and promoting safe gear purchases or your promoting your own interests... there are so many things some people here could have said to check legitimacy or share their accumulated knowledge to protect the buyer. Notice my concern is protecting the buyer. Not promoting someone's business. C I did in fact ask a question of a business man: This is a discussion forum, you can answere the question or once again ignore it by name calling. ? Your choice. And I also fail to understand how someone can freely admit their making a wild ass guess by giving their opinion of someone else's advertisement??? : "I stand by my first assumption " WAG's. However well intended, it's not your money, is it???? Try not to make supportive sentences and in that same sentence admit your making a guess.... what if it is a scam, and quite frankly I don't give a rats ass if at some point it shows up here either, that is no grantee of the quality or condition of any gear. And if you actually know the seller, please post their name and or their home dz for verification. Most jumpers want to help other jumpers sell their stuff. Apparently you recognized the TEXT only number as some jewelry store that because it shares the same name as a popular skydiving store that makes this legit?? JVX strikes again, with rather sophisticated bs, and someone else seconds another WAG??? From a jewelry store??? This still has scam written all over it. Great news if someone makes this purchase and it turn out all okedoke, but not a one of you is going to stand by your comment's if some poor unsuspecting sap gets burned. And glad to help ya with your sales

  22. I've seen a lot of people jumping in similar, but the top flabby, loose clothing near your Emergency handles is always a concern! C Your free to do what you want, those are great pants for landing in scrub! But don't forget the best practices for the eventualities that can really wreck your day! But what do I know, "I only have one tandem jump."
  23. The T shirt thing is a growing issue, IMO. Put on a T shirt and your thoughts should run to all of the bad what if's that can happen. Too many T shirts doesn't make the practice ok. A T shirt has caused more than a few incidents, but how easy it is to forget!!! It isn't worth the risk, even on the hottest of days. Personally I 'd rather see you go topless if it's that hot,... safer! C Jumpsuit. But what do I know, "I only have one tandem jump."
  24. I know for many of you this might not be a lot of cash. But the fact that your skipping an inspection as part of the deal is the biggest red flag! Escrow service, Inspection, all of that kind of thing! C Or take the risk and if it turns out bad, you have learned something! Sometimes if the seller isn't willing, (there is another sucker just down the road,) I would walk, and I would never purchase without some rigger to blame later.... and I would also pay my rigger for this service! Jumpers don't generally sell shit on Craig's list and they certainly don't point out that rigs aren't "toys." The important information that a jumper would want to tell yo is MISSING! But the "lines" are all there! But what do I know, "I only have one tandem jump."
