i agree with ian on the 500-600 jumps being too many jumps. i've seen nick batch break multiple lines many times with less jumps than that on those blue ones Slip Stream Air Sports Do not go softly, do not go quietly, never back down

also, this isn't always a good thing cause if the reserve flies like a diablo then you could be in a world of hurt. Slip Stream Air Sports Do not go softly, do not go quietly, never back down

In my honest opinion PD makes THE best reserves and the only ones i'd buy. i've been fortunate enough to fly a lot of different canopies, including reserves, and they are above and beyond anything else i've tried. Like Dave said it's not exactly the piece of equipment you want to skimp on or buy to make yourself look "cooler", it's there as your last line of defense and personally i want the best over my head. sorry if that sounds like a sales pitch but i am very adiment about reserves due to the nature of our sport and seeing some really fucked up things through out my time jumping. hope that helps by the way if you see tyson or todd at snohomish tell them Stuart says hi, haven't talked with those guys in a long time but that's where i started. Recovery Arcs on intermediate canopies.
superstu replied to DebaucheroRdrgz's topic in Swooping and Canopy Control
90% of the people i work with need to bump up their altitudes, and i know other coaches on my team, PDFT, ect, say the same thing. it amazes pretty much everyone how high you can actually start a turn and still get it to the ground, just need the right tools in the tool box Slip Stream Air Sports Do not go softly, do not go quietly, never back down -
Nice job to all, sounds like everyone had to fly their asses off. if someone has a link to an official results page where you can see individual rounds that would be awesome. any vid or pics would be cool too. Slip Stream Air Sports Do not go softly, do not go quietly, never back down

Recovery Arcs on intermediate canopies.
superstu replied to DebaucheroRdrgz's topic in Swooping and Canopy Control
by the way for all you "young" canopy pilots out there, if you truely want to really learn something and truely want to last in the sport of skydiving, then listen to JC in the below video. JC, for those that don't know has been around this sport and has probably one of THE biggest impacts on our sport than anyone else out there right now and I do mean any one. every time i personally speak with him or just watch him i realize how little i know and i learn something new every time. so everyone on DZ.com should listen to this cause JC really is the Moses of the canopy piloting world. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9dgNrB-7y5g Slip Stream Air Sports Do not go softly, do not go quietly, never back down -
Recovery Arcs on intermediate canopies.

Seems to me an honest questions was asked in a forum that is designed to be a resource center for people interested in canopy flight and somehow turned into a flame fest. is this guy in an extreme danger zone for canopy choice and skill level? yes, more than he knows. however, it is possible to get through it IF he takes the right steps, but he has to be flawless or he will get him self hurt or killed, or worse, someone else. so to the original poster...DON'T FUCK UP Slip Stream Air Sports Do not go softly, do not go quietly, never back down -
loosening chest strap/leaning forward
superstu replied to jf951's topic in Swooping and Canopy Control
To answer the original question, the effects of loosening the chest strap on both HP canopies and non-HP canopies can be noticed. Most people don't consider many of the CRW canopies to be high performance, however they will actually loosen and re-tighten their chest straps depending on the performance they want (ie if they need to go slower/ be less effecient they will re-tighten the chest strap). For me personally there are a couple of things I notice when i lean forward during a swoop and they are not all physics oriented. For example, mentally when i lean forward it gives me a more aggressive mind set which helps build confidence during a distance run. When i'm in my roll out i will lean forward to help the recovery arc out. When you flatten way out it does help reduce drag, which in effect helps lift because you'll be able to maintain your speed longer and speed=lift. On the flip side, even at the top level, most people who lean way forward are "dirty" in the harness, meaning to much movement in the harness, thus scrubbing speed. i've seen everyone do this from Nick Batch, to Jay Mo, to Marat, to GW, to everyone. if you ever watch Kaz Sheekey do a distance run, once she gets on roll-out she does not move in the harness...at all. she picks up her feet as she goes through the gates and that's it and little Kazzie can go BIG. Those are just my thoughts, whether leaning forward effects the CG in the harness or canopy or whatever is debatable in my book because there are too many variables that can't be calculated. I mean you have a non-rigid wing, and harness that is flexible, and so many pivot points within the system i don't know if you could ever calculate it out. damn, that's like 2002-2003 stuff. if memory serves me correct i think the line was designed (not sure if it worked or not) to give a little bit of toggle input if they got too deep into the rears and were about to stall. but shit, i don't even remember any more. that's what the standings look like, great job to both none the less. same with GW and his speed record. edited to add: jay's performance record of 206m might be in jepordy in the next couple of years the way things are going Slip Stream Air Sports Do not go softly, do not go quietly, never back down

now i've got to ask, why do people think nzaerosports is so far ahead in development? is it cause jim says so or have people gone to all the manufactures and on to their design computers and looked at all the files and saw the scientific data that proves one is "10 years" of any one else? what makes people think that PD, or any other manufacture for that matter, doesn't also have more advanced parachutes just sitting there on the shelf? seems kind of silly to me but go ahead with this banter. know what's kind of funny, i tried to pack nick's all sail jvx 63 into my rig made for a velo 96 that had a huge logo on the bottom, and the 63 was not even close to fitting in the rig. just made me laugh a little bit when you said "packing is a bit more difficult..." To answer the original question, I think there is nothing wrong with having a WORLD event held at any elevation. I only attended 4 competitions in 2009, all of which were at sea level, and out of those 4 competitions there were 2 severe incidences where the medics had to be called. Also, for both of these times the people that got hurt trained at sea level, one of which had trained on-site for a long time. Bottom line in my opinion is that yeah elevation and density altitude definitely have an impact on people and how they swoop, but what's more important i think is that when people get into a competition atmosphere they are more likely to do stupid things they wouldn't normally do. it can be caused by either inexperience with hitting gates, being around the best swoopers in the world, environmental factors, or damn near anything, because it all changes in a competition, let alone the World Cup of Canopy Piloting. takes me about 100 jumps to start feeling comfortable with a new canopy too...comp velo is no different. start higher both the turn and roll out and see what happens Slip Stream Air Sports Do not go softly, do not go quietly, never back down

i switched to PD primarily because of the customer service. I was tired of getting brushed off once they had my money. p.s. i would fly PD even if i wasn't sponsored because they treat all their customers like sponsored skydivers when it comes to customer service. Fun little article and video from last nights pyro jump at Mile-Hi Skydiving in Longmont, CO. When to migrate to 450's & 720's
superstu replied to hparrish's topic in Swooping and Canopy Control
it's no different than moving from double fronts to 90's, to 180's, to 270's. you do so when you're safe with what you're doing now, can hit your gates/target 10/10 times, and have maxed everything out. the main difference however is it's harder and harder to hit the gates/target with good power doing a bigger and bigger turn. for example i've done quite a few 810's but my ability to hit gates with the power i want consistantly isn't there, so i stick with the 450 for now. there is never an instance where some one should say "ok at 500 jumps i can now do a 270, and 1000 jumps later i'll move on to a 450's". jump numbers don't matter as much compared to how much time in the harness is devoted to developing the skills necessary to survive to the next step. but if someone is in doubt of the next step or if they should move on to the next step then they should seek a qualified coach.
