  1. Holy blasthandle, batman! If some old guy can do it then obviously it can't be very extreme. Otherwise he'd already be dead. Bruce McConkey 'I thought we were gonna die, and I couldn't think of anyone
  2. Tough call, but I'd have to say my first Bridge Day in West Virginia in 1984.... If some old guy can do it then obviously it can't be very extreme. Otherwise he'd already be dead. Bruce McConkey 'I thought we were gonna die, and I couldn't think of anyone
  3. Didn't Eustis have a twin beech? If some old guy can do it then obviously it can't be very extreme. Otherwise he'd already be dead. Bruce McConkey 'I thought we were gonna die, and I couldn't think of anyone
  4. Why would cf jumpers pulling outside the door exit before tandems? If some old guy can do it then obviously it can't be very extreme. Otherwise he'd already be dead. Bruce McConkey 'I thought we were gonna die, and I couldn't think of anyone
  5. I've just received word that George passed away this afternoon. After his operations he had gone downhill quickly, but at least his suffering is over. Thank you to all those that sent cards, many were received from all over the States and also Europe. I'm sure it helped George to feel people cared. 6. Tightness of the chest strap isn't necessarily real important, not like the length of the main lift web is. The chest strap holds the upper part of the main lift webs together, but they are also held together by the snaps on the tandem student's harness which are clipped onto the instructor's tandem rig. They can't spread apart a whole lot once they're clipped onto the tandem rig's rings, it holds them in place relative to each other. If some old guy can do it then obviously it can't be very extreme. 7. My 30th anniversary today. Sept 23, 1979, Grand Bend Ontario. If some old guy can do it then obviously it can't be very extreme. Otherwise he'd already be dead. Bruce McConkey 'I thought we were gonna die, and I couldn't think of anyone
  8. If you're going to give it away, I wouldn't mind it myself.... If some old guy can do it then obviously it can't be very extreme. Otherwise he'd already be dead. Bruce McConkey 'I thought we were gonna die, and I couldn't think of anyone
  9. Virtually all the lightweight round mains in tandem containers that I've seen were in bags. Mostly the bags had a 'keyhole' - a velcro closed slit that allowed the tightened lines at line stretch to open the bag up further and allow the canopy out. This is also the type of bag my Strato-star came with. I think most bags at the time were deeper and narrower, designed to sit sideways in the container with the pc attached at one end, instead of the wider, shorter bags with a centre-pull now. 10. -- chest strap and belly band (unusual by 1980 I'd think) Not sure why you'd say that, there were certainly lots of rigs with belly bands and even belly bands with pilot chute pouches on them right up until the mid-80's. Eddie Grimm's expecially come to mind, but there were others. If some old guy can do it then obviously it can't be very extreme. Otherwise he'd already be dead. 11. I have used my Reflex 145 at airshows or demos with big landing fields, but I more often use my Fury 220, sometimes putting a stack together before breaking and coming in separate (have landed them, but don't really like to any more). On tight demos, I sometimes use a 282 or 302 Foil. Really depends on the event. If some old guy can do it then obviously it can't be very extreme. Otherwise he'd already be dead. 12. The first pic is the billboard pic of the ad, the second occurred as Bill and George passed a billboard on the way to Florida the next trip. They stopped and had George pose in his gear beside his picture. Interesting, the original pic was shot in Florida and the background turned out quite brown. In the lab they later changed it and put in the green Canadian summer background. Bill and George were still happy to have gotten the trip to florida for the commercial, even if they could have just done it up here in the first place. 13. stay away from my gear.... If some old guy can do it then obviously it can't be very extreme. Otherwise he'd already be dead. Bruce McConkey 'I thought we were gonna die, and I couldn't think of anyone
  14. The second girl was so small we had to pull the harness to the stops to get ittight enough. She was talked into it by her fat, alcoholic, ex-paratrooper father. On the way down, she had a dead grip on my left hand, at pull time. This foolishness ocurred before Cypres was invented. That was the last time I jumped with a minor! _________________________________________________ You never had someone older grab your hand? I come down strongly in favor of underage jumpers. How else do they learn to win world competitions? M
  15. It was supposed to be 900 feet the weekend after BD, into a party, but we forgot we were over a hill 400' higher than the dropzone, so it ended up being 500 feet agl. And I missed my handle the first time.... Using my maverick. Pretty normal pack job.... If some old guy can do it then obviously it can't be very extreme. Otherwise he'd already be dead. 16. All I know is that it left my back then it felt like a scary long time before anything started to happen. _______________________________________________ Try opening a diaper-constrained 26'lopo at 500' going 120, then you'll know what a long opening feels like. 17. __________________________________________ Hnnn. I figured the jm got the static-line around his neck when he left, and that was his head. Same size as a bowling ball..... 18. At the recent POPS meet at Skydive Toronto a friend of mine dropped off some boxes of magazines. Looking through them, I came upon some old Spotter magazines from 1972. On thing that caught my eye was mention that Eddie Grimm of Niagara Parachutes holds the record for longest static line on a jump with a 300È line. He said he had about 4 1é2 seconds of freefall before reaching the end. I didnèt meet Eddie but I knew two of his sons. Anyone have more info on this jump, or other jumps with long static lines.... 19. In your deployment photo, what exactly is the bridle arrangement being used? Seems like an early retractable bridle system for those CRW jumps. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Hi pchap, From the looks of opening 2, slider up and bridle stretch. My '76 model Strat wh/slider had a double bridle attached at the high point of cells 2 an 4 . Later everyone went to a single attachment point on the center cell on 5's, 7's and 9's. The double attachment point worked ok, maybe better than a single but it also involved "more material, metal and weight" that everyone was eager to trim down!! __________________________________________________ I think you're reading a lot into that Peter. The original strato-stars came out designed for ropes and rings, I think. As such they had holes in the top and bottom skins and a large canvas patch on the top. I think when people went to sliders, they were just running the bridal through one of the holes, up through the other, and tying them together. That's my theory anyway. I cut the canvas off mine, it was a big wad. If some old guy can do it then obviously it can't be very extreme. Otherwise he'd already be dead. 20. They look similar to the strato-star one-pin containers I used on my first jump, but probably bigger. If some old guy can do it then obviously it can't be very extreme. Otherwise he'd already be dead. Bruce McConkey 'I thought we were gonna die, and I couldn't think of anyone
  21. OK, I will concede that maybe it is extremely remotely possible to get tangled in your own canopy while deploying. __________________________________________________ so now at the revised totals of 250 skydives and 75 base-jumps, you are an expert, who can't see the problem? Altho you do concede a remote possibility.... If some old guy can do it then obviously it can't be very extreme. Otherwise he'd already be dead. 22. Is attempting this really as retarded as some people make it out to be? I hate hearing about people calling something retarded just because they don't know what they're talking about. Like Wendy said ghostplanes can be fun, sometimes they get complicated. Sometimes it seems more stable if you slide your legs down the risers so the v is around your legs. Other than that, can't really add anything more to Tom's post, he pretty much covered it all. If some old guy can do it then obviously it can't be very extreme. Otherwise he'd already be dead. Bruce McConkey 'I thought we were gonna die, and I couldn't think of anyone
  23. Weren't there a bunch of midget skydivers in the movie 'Polar Bear Express'? Or were they elves? If some old guy can do it then obviously it can't be very extreme. Otherwise he'd already be dead. Bruce McConkey 'I thought we were gonna die, and I couldn't think of anyone
  24. One of my cherished possessions is the '64 edition I picked up at a flea market, signed by members of the St. Thomas parachute club with their licence numbers. At least one of them is still an active jumper. If some old guy can do it then obviously it can't be very extreme. Otherwise he'd already be dead. 25. Just general comments It's one thing to audit a course, it's another thing to have to pay to audit a course.... I haven't actually heard anyone invited to audit a course they already had over the years. (Well, that's not true, I have heard of one, but it's never been suggested to instructors in general that they could audit courses if they wished as far as I know.) It would be ironic to a tandem examiner rating, only to lose other coach or jm ratings due to currency regulations. That;s my problem with the idea. If some old guy can do it then obviously it can't be very extreme. Otherwise he'd already be dead. Bruce McConkey 'I thought we were gonna die, and I couldn't think of anyone
