Please double check youre chest strap!!
obelixtim replied to dustin19d's topic in Safety and Training
The golden rule in skydiving is that you are your own safety officer......never rely on anyone else...ever...so know the checks, have a routine, and stick to it....... If you can't look after yourself properly, don't expect others to do so.....even instructors are human and can make mistakes..... Once out the door you're on your own..... Suicide at the DZ (was: fatality in scotland)
obelixtim replied to CanuckInUSA's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
I agree with your sentiments Canuck, and for the many people involved in the sport who work their arse off for it....such an action, misguided or not, is nothing less than a giant slap in the face....... That kind of comment is certainly not "worthless", sometimes things just need to be said, and inevitably some feelings might be hurt.........and for the sake of the people who have to deal with the consequences, bounces ARE the stuff of nightmares.......something I wouldn't wish on my worst enemy......so if it makes even one person think twice about their actions......its well worth it..... Asking people to respect their sport is a very valid sentiment........ A boycott of the funeral though, if true, is a shameful thing..............its a time for respect and peace.....not bitterness and condemnation............ Billy is not God.....But he has a reputation for coming up with some good ideas and some good gear........I've used and appreciated lots of it....... BUT.......Billy is not God.......trust him if you like.......but if you have a mal.....Bill ain't gonna pull the handles for you.......save your own arse......always been the rules...... Perhaps he'll be good enough to tell us why the skyhook is so shit hot..... Without the commercial overkill..... Please...... My computer beat me at chess, It was no match for me at kickboxing....

I was generalising about AAD's.....and student AAD's are included.......FXC's and Cypres.... Murphys Law.....particularly applies to skydiving........ My computer beat me at chess, It was no match for me at kickboxing....

Keep in mind....If you have an AAD, steep turns down low could risk a two out situation....Murphy's law at work....... My computer beat me at chess, It was no match for me at kickboxing....

Anyone else here get Cluster Headaches?
obelixtim replied to SkydivingNurse's topic in Safety and Training
Sounds like you won't be enjoying the jump much anyway...so yes it will affect your jump.....but if it means you are not focussed on the jump it does have other implications......and that could cause probems..... If you arn't 100% switched on....jumping might not be a good idea......whats the opinion of your Doctor about your symptoms???... Undermining an Instructor and Student Safety....
obelixtim replied to Unstable's topic in Safety and Training
This guy is way out of line, and has demonstrated a degree of ignorance that proves he is not a suitable candidate to be dishing out advice in the first place..... Personally, someone poking their nose in, the way you describe, would risk getting it flattened if they did it to me........ At the very least I'd tell him to get a job involving sex and travel...... i.e. F*** OFF....!! ......Tosser!!!..... My computer beat me at chess, It was no match for me at kickboxing.... -
"...discussing RW...not CRW....." Yeah...I was aware of that....I was discussing pack jobs.....and principles remain the same...whatever discipline we partake in........ I think we agree on the principles of self preservation.....looking out for the other guy who might take you out has always been a basic survival skill.....and always will be..... My computer beat me at chess, It was no match for me at kickboxing....

Its easy to pack your canopy to open on a consistent heading....competitive CRW is all about saving time....so canopies are packed to open on the heading you want, to enable that first formation to happen fast....talk to a CRW dog about it.....its all to do with the nose...... Of course, its a waste of time doing that if your body position is skew whiff during deployment or opening........shoulders level, facing the right direction......pretty impossible to avoid facing someone in heavy traffic I know .....but everyone at least should be able to open on heading fairly consistently.... I can't think why you are still "REALLY" scared, apart from the fact that you are never current enough.....(averaging about 70 jumps per year)..... If you are scared, that will communicate itself to your student....not good at all.... so how can you possibly do a good job for a student if you arn't relaxed and confident yourself......the student will be freaking....big time.....really unfair on them... "It never goes away.... seriously"... Speaking for yourself I assume......because it DOES go away........else a hell of a lot of people would be quitting....... I suggest you need to do a whole heap of jumps.... develop your own confidence....and only then start worrying about helping others......there will always be plenty of opportunity to do so...... All you are doing at the moment is increasing the anxiety levels all round... Skydiving is meant to be fun, and it is.... it should never be a continuous battle with irrational fears every time you jump.... If it is that bad, I would seriously contemplate "what the hell am I doing here"...to quote a well known phrase....... My computer beat me at chess, It was no match for me at kickboxing....

Pull time is pull time is pull time....so you PULL.....a spin is not going to stop the canopy opening.....you might end up with a few line twists...not anything to worry about.....but discuss the spin scenario with your instructor first.....and follow the advice you are given.... If you do get into trouble in F/F and you don't know how to solve it....first STOP the F/F....PULL.....you can find out how to solve the problem later........just keep your brain switched on and think clearly..... Panic or freaking is a useless and dangerous emotion......expunge it from your repertoire......it'll only guarantee you grief......for sure..... now get up there and go for it..... Remember, no matter what our experiece levels are.....we've all been there.....done that.....you'll get it right, and then you'll wonder what all the fuss was about..... My computer beat me at chess, It was no match for me at kickboxing....

I agree...while I know I could have a problem on a jump I don't fear one.....perhaps it comes from knowing I can deal with it, after having a mean mal early in my jump career....I certainly don't get into the plane afraid.....jumping is quite normal... Fear generally comes from the unknown.....and till you've had a mal there is a seed of doubt in the mind: a) will I recognise a problem, and: b) will I react to it quickly and correctly..... From experience, recognising a mal isn't a problem...you'll know pretty quickly something isn't normal.....and if reacting properly is a worry, all you can do is prepare yourself by lots of hanging harness drills..... As far as not knowing about your gear, go and watch your rigger pack a few reserves and get them to explain in detail all about gear....constuction, materials, strength, how it is designed to work.....etc..... This will ease your mind.....but as most people will say..having your first mal is actually a relief...as it gets that monkey off your back.... Its all about confidence and trust...in yourself and your gear......staying current is also important ......... Just go for it..... Well then I've seen a couple of Gyro's bounce then....they were homebuilts.....maybe that explains it....kinda like building your own parachute on mums sewing machine I suppose...... My computer beat me at chess, It was no match for me at kickboxing....

Sorry, it was "Faulknerwn" in post number 6 who said he "tracks for a couple of thousand feet after cutaway"....and while chopping and getting away from a wrap while doing CRW isn't a bad idea, I don't think you need a couple of thousand feet to do that..... I just reread your post and noticed you didn't include the word "long" before delay....Sorry... But thought I'd point out the perils of delaying a long time after cutaway in case some newbie thought it was a good idea and decided to try it.... My computer beat me at chess, It was no match for me at kickboxing....
-
Yeah....I've seen a couple of gyro's end up as a pile of nuts and bolts.......and that was after "normal" flights........why would you want to jump one though????...especially with that spinning mincer at the back..... My computer beat me at chess, It was no match for me at kickboxing....
-
Whats the idea of doing a long delay after cutting away???.....silly idea I think.....horsing around in the middle of an emergency doesn't strike me as a good idea......plus giving your reserve, and yourself a terminal opening when you don't need to doesn't make sense at all.......shouldn't you save your life asap??....... I reckon if you had a round reserve you'd only do it once....the opening shock would make your eyes water.....and your toes curl!!!...... My computer beat me at chess, It was no match for me at kickboxing....

Try releasing the brakes!!!! :))......had to say it!!.... My computer beat me at chess, It was no match for me at kickboxing....

Interesting photo on the home page of Team Evolution doing CRW.....but what are those long dangly things hanging out the back of their canopies????....... I think they need to check out a decent retract system if they are doing a lot of CRW..... Tell them to ask JYRO.....he knows about these things..... My computer beat me at chess, It was no match for me at kickboxing....

It is a snag hazard....but it'll just mean the strap will break and your watch will get lost.....most likely it'll be a riser that does it on opening.... My computer beat me at chess, It was no match for me at kickboxing....

If you can imagine long hair blowing out behind you in a strong wind.....let your arms and legs relax and let the relative wind blow them back like that......your body will naturally fall stable..... My computer beat me at chess, It was no match for me at kickboxing....

I don't think its necessary, or wise, to advise people who are under two good canopies to start initiating downplanes and cutting away mains.....to see what its like.....opening a can of worms..... With low experience/ no idea about CRW/ misjudge ment, and a lot of potential for injury, or worse, people are liable to try things when its not a good idea, or necessary to do so........ There is an interesting "2 canopies out" thread on the "Incidents" board...worth checking out.... This scenario warrants careful thought and research by every jumper before they ever get into the situation, however unlikely......not reacting, suddenly because of a nasty surprise after opening......with full on adrenalin rush..... My computer beat me at chess, It was no match for me at kickboxing....

What the.......................?????? My computer beat me at chess, It was no match for me at kickboxing....

They may have a general idea of acceptable opening distances, but really there are too many variables....body weight, position, packing method, right down to temperature, humidity levels, opening altitudes etc.......really I think if your canopy is taking more than 500 ft to open then it needs looking at...... OK you've got your coach rating.....now you are going to learn how to be a good coach.... Expect the unexpected......stay cool under fire....teach your students to think.....and things should go OK...... Go for it.... My computer beat me at chess, It was no match for me at kickboxing....

Just your comment "let other people look after everyone else"...... We should ALL get involved if we see something that concerns us on the DZ......Instructors/JM's/DZO's don't always see everything that goes on...... My computer beat me at chess, It was no match for me at kickboxing....
