  1. Trying for distance either way, you can reduce your body surface area by pulling your legs up and bringing your arms in close to your body. Less drag means you will get a bit further. It might not be much but sometimes it'll get you to a better landing area. My computer beat me at chess, It was no match for me at kickboxing....
  2. At the commercial tandem DZs, awesome locations, but you might not get a lot of sport jumps. Most are worth a visit on their own anyway. That's why you need to do some research and make contacts now, you have plenty of time. Typical NZ tour starts in the north and proceeds south, so you will come across most of them. Nelson/Motueka is a good one, also Wellington do a lot of sport jumping, and I hear a bit about Skydiving Kiwis in the South Island, but never been there. I don't have any favourites.....and I have mates at most of the DZs. Their websites will give you a better idea than I can. Check out their photo albums for an idea of the visuals. 3. Just google Skydive NZ and it will give you locations and websites of DZs. Some are tandem mills, but you can contact them to see what you can do. Plenty of great scenery to check out from altitude. My computer beat me at chess, It was no match for me at kickboxing....

  7. Nice story telling. It sounds like a lack of planning and training for the pax to me. But as a non American no one cared. About what I'd expect. Incoming....3...2...1... My computer beat me at chess, It was no match for me at kickboxing....

  9. I doubt this situation would arise that often, and why would it be so difficult? Most of these transactions would just be a couple of clicks of a mouse. Minus an amount from one account and adding it to another. They'd be doing this for normal transactions anyway. You'd be hard pressed to find a human at some banks these days. 10. Why does this not surprise me? Some DZs obviously have the attitude that they are doing their clients a favour. However this is the age of social media. Name and shame I say..... My computer beat me at chess, It was no match for me at kickboxing....
  11. I think the principle remains the same. People pay money for a service, and that implies a contract between the two parties. I could understand a DZ perhaps claiming 10% or so as an administration fee, but that needs to be made clear at the time money is paid. But what is there to stop jumper A with unused tickets to simply sell them to jumper B, or transferring his credit to another jumpers account and taking the cash from him? DZOs that indulge in such shonky practices need to be called out, its unethical as well as dishonest. But I guess they pay for it with the damage it causes their reputation. Why would anyone do that? 12. That would be illegal here. Apparently not in the UK. My computer beat me at chess, It was no match for me at kickboxing....
  13. Greed. Just as bad are DZs that sell gift certificates which expire after a certain time period with no refund. Theft by despicable people, who have no place in a sport that is built on trust. My computer beat me at chess, It was no match for me at kickboxing....
  14. I've done a few over the years, a couple of them stick in my memory. One after an all night session at the local bikies club HQ, when I wasn't feeling very ho ho ho. (Don't try this at home) This was for all the airport workers kids, so everyone knew everybody. I had to hand out presents from a sack I was handed after landing. First kid came up (all the presents were named), and instead of the traditional "Merry Xmas" greeting, I came out with "happy birthday". D'oh!!! All the adults cracked up!!! I never lived that one down. Another one was into a works Xmas party with hundreds of kids, again all had presents, but I didn't want to go through that bit, so we had another Santa hiding in a tent, ready to step out with the sack as I walked in. The other Santa was a rather dark skinned Maori guy, and of course the kids picked that up straight away...Santa had changed colour in a matter of seconds. One little smartarse came out with..."You're not Santa, you're that skydiver fulla". To which my reply was..."no presents for you then" He disappeared quick smart. Candy/lolly drops were always done from under canopy by Santas helpers, they worked fine. Beards go on once under canopy. My computer beat me at chess, It was no match for me at kickboxing....
  15. The biggest problem was the pud just being stuck to the bottom of the container with Velcro. Very easy to wipe it off on climbout, and when the Velcro was worn, the pud would fall off walking to the plane. Saw a lot of floating puds where the drill was to roll onto your back, reach around and find the pin and pull that. Saw quite a few reserve rides as well. Someone then thought of holding it in place with a rubber band, and things progressed from there. Jumped a pull out for years with no problems, apart from one lazy dump, which gave me a short rush before the PC cleared. My computer beat me at chess, It was no match for me at kickboxing....

  18. That’s what I was thinking. I have never laughed so hard at an idea. And your’re not a inventor. You’re a bad idea guy. The bad idea just got badder. "Madder than mad Mac McMad, winner of the madman of the year award". My computer beat me at chess, It was no match for me at kickboxing....
  19. We have standardised training for students in SA. It is ALWAYS full EP, pulling both handels in the correct order. This removes the need for an inexperienced jumper to evaluate a high speed mal. Your comment now suggests that cutting away a PIT is incorrect. I feel differently. Unless I have nothing out i am going to cut away first The reason i bolded my original comment is because it is irresponsible to tell student to deviate from their training. This is something they need to discuss with an instructor in person. What if the student had ridden the down plane into the ground or the main had deployed a bit lower so they did not have time to realise what was happening. In this situation cutting away the main first would have been correct. As an aside, what training did this guy get for a 2 out situation? And what is the standardised training for 2 outs in SA? I realise he might not have had a lot of time to assess and deal with a 2 out. But that might be the issue, more than pulling silver. A 2 out doesn't automatically downplane. In this situation cutting away the main first would have been correct. First job is to stop the FF. He did that. He is alive. And here is a "what if". Remember this is a student. What if he had a problem locating the cutaway handle? He could spend the rest of his life focussing on that, while the panic builds up in a desperate attempt to cutaway first. Especially if his AAD didn't fire for whatever reason. My computer beat me at chess, It was no match for me at kickboxing....
  21. EPs need to be ingrained to the point of being instinctive, and really there are only two scenarios to plan for. I think your example shows that the student did, in fact, do the right thing. In freefall, with a problem, the first thing to do is STOP the freefall. He did that successfully. What happened after that is incidental to the main problem. It should never be a factor when reacting to the initial problem. That is not the time to be thinking "what ifs". This is skydiving, nothing is guaranteed, and one scenario you survive today, can kill you tomorrow, even if you do everything right. Basically, the drills for each scenario are pretty simple, and those need to be ingrained in every skydiver. If everything is done correctly there is much more chance of it being your lucky day. History proves that to be true. If anyone reading this do not have EPS ingrained to the point of instinct, best they get back to the hanging harness. 22. Its a bit more than that. Many "Instructors" do not know how to teach, and make things way more complicated than they need to be. And a lot of times people are made to pay for advice which back in the day used to come for free. Then there are time constraints on people at busy dropzones. So there are barriers in place, but that in no way excuses individuals from the obligation (and I use the word deliberately) to find out as much as possible about the equipment and techniques they need, to be the best and safest skydivers they can be. All the information they need is out there. And to help those less experienced learn and progress. My computer beat me at chess, It was no match for me at kickboxing....
  23. Tying anything to yourself is a good way to make both the front and back pages of the local newspaper. Its been tried and took a few bounces before being ditched as a very bad plan. My computer beat me at chess, It was no match for me at kickboxing....
  24. I wouldn't call that a non incident. A non fatality would be more apt. There is some truth in the saying that an AAD save is a bounce that did not happen, and should be investigated in the same way as a bounce. The bonus being the primary witness is there to give their version. His analysis is very good, but really it all boils down to dithering when he should be reacting. The big lesson is to keep your EPs current, and be ready for anything. It seems he allowed himself to forget the drill for total malfunction. When the ants look like people..... 25. Irrelevant to the point. 90% of my jumps have been formation jumps. Never had a problem. If things are getting "hairy", WTF are you doing jumping with idiots anyway? Do you not brief them properly? Its not something I would ever consider doing after breakoff after a formation. First of all, I would only be doing formations with jumpers who I trust, and for big formations, those jumpers would have proved themselves anyway. Smaller formations with a novice involved, they would be in a place where they have been properly briefed and be easy to watch. If I started throwing barrel rolls into the mix after breakoff, I would be quickly awarded the order of the axe by the other jumpers, and fair enough too. Tell me, if you throw a barrel roll, and find another jumper above you, what exactly are you going to do? Especially if there are other jumpers below you. Throw another roll losing eye contact with them? Or track and barrel roll your way down to ground level? I hope no novices are taking on board this advice you are promulgating. It goes against everything people should do AFTER breakoff from a formation. Stop it! My computer beat me at chess, It was no match for me at kickboxing....
