  1. Yes, quite correct. As a Catholic myself, I know this principle of "Papal Infallibility" is one of the most misunderstood tenets of the Church. Papal Infallibility has a very very narrow scope. It is traced back to the 16th Chapter of Matthew in Peter's declarative answer to Jesus's question, "Who do you think I am?" Peter answers and Jesus commissions Peter to lead the establishment of the Church. The term "Pope" came several centuries later. The line of Peter i.e. the Papacy is based on the tenet that of the 12 Apostles, Peter had a better knowledge of Jesus's nature. Thus theoretically, when a Pope dies and the Cardinals meet in Conclave to choose among them (through prayer and discussion) who presently has among them shares a similar insight as Peter. Thus, when the Pope speaks on issues and scope of faith and doctrine, it is infallible. Now I know the "incoming' awaits. Folks, I'm just telling y'all how it is within the Catholic Church. I'm sure there will be disagreement, I'm just presenting the "why!"
  2. For everyone's situational awareness. The following organizations have been awarded contracts as "navigators" to "help" all of us sign up for Obamacare. 1. Service Employees International Union (SEIU) 2. ACORN 3. Planned Parenthood This information can be verified through a Google search.
  3. The point is that I don't a utility company negotiating with me. I want to own my own solar batteries and if possible construct some wind power as well. I want to be FREE of a power company (as much as possible) keep the $$ for myself. And I'm under no illusion, the power companies will lobby local, state and federal government to secure some type of exclusive agreement so we have the buy the technology from them etc etc. At the end of the day it's all about paying off the legislators and who's ox get goared.
  4. Yes!!!! Impact occurs, no denial. Minimize the impact, I'm for that. Zero impact, sorry, that one just might be a bridge too far (IMHO).
  5. Was typing too fast when I posted the following: "I would prefer (and I think many wold also prefer) to pay for their own solar batteries on my own home and reduce the amount of money I'd have to pay a utility." To clarify, I'll pay for my own solar batteries myself. I offer my humble apologies (no beer this time) for any misunderstanding created by the error.
  6. I never said nor did I imply propping something up with taxpayer dollars. In fact I would be against it. Wozniak and Jobs didn't (as far as I know) use taxpayer dollars to build the Apple I. Let loose the innovation, the better mousetrap so to speak is found in the daring souls who see a need and proceed to take the risk to fill it.
  7. Now go do it and don't look back!
  8. OK...why pay a utility comapny for something that could easily be incentivized and the resource be obtained for the front end cost of buying the material? Wind is the same way. Through creative architectural design it is possible to build a house that could utilize both solar and wind and reduce a homeowner's utility costs. By how much? Perhaps 50 - 80 percent and with enough imagination get off the grid for good. How can the argument be made to invade and impact open space with solar and wind farms but NOT oil wells? The open spaces that environmentlst so zealously wish to preserve is impacted with human technology is it not? This is one point on which I agree with the environmentalist. It is possible to put solar batteries on houses for the majority of the US population do you not agree? Even at a cost and energy savings of 10% for each house with solar batteries, there would be a drastic reduction for demand of centralized energy i.e, utiliity companies. Hey save the $$$ on the utility bill and go buy a new rig or more jumps. Why the requirement to be so dependent on centralized energy through a utiliity company?
  9. I was 57 and my wife 56 when we got our "A" license. You go girl...never too young...never too young!
  10. Why the thinking your going to get flamed? I'm a new "A" myself. ideas get exchanged here. Keep talking to your instructors at your DZ, enroll in a canopy control class. As long as I've been here, on issues of skydiving, people have been very helpful here. The "Speaker's Corner" is a different story. You put an opinion out over there, expect someone to respond. They may agree or disagree with you over there but that's what the Speaker's Corner is there for. Here, hey, nothing here but encouragement.
  11. New guy here...very new guy here (only 72 jumps and licensed since last Jan). OK, here's the good news, you're NOT, I repeat NOT alone. You can read all the books you want. You can read a whole $%%^^# library, it won't matter until you actually do your first AFF. The yips are there, we all have them and as we get more jumps in our log, the magnitude of the yips dissapears into the "noise background." Courage as the say, is having the hell scared out of you and doing it anyway. Good luck!
  12. Solar energy is a great idea. And yet I find desert solar sites like the Ivanpah Towers both counterproductive as well as hyprocitical. So, instead of providing the incentives for people to put solar batteries on the roofs of houses, the desert and other available land is impacted to build these solar farms. I thought the environmentalists might have an uproar over this? I would prefer (and I think many wold also prefer) to pay for their own solar batteries on my own home and reduce the amount of money I'd have to pay a utility.
  13. And in those 62 cases, consider the location/principality and determine if concealed carry permits were authorized or the facility in which the slayings took place prohibited firearms on the premises. Every month, the NRA does publish incidents where criminals were either deterred, wounded, or killed by a private citizen with a firearm acting in self defense. Understanding of course that the NRA data set should only be considered in the totality of other facts on hand with respect to a particular incident.
  14. Ooopps! I left out "military" next to career. Senior moment. The mind is the first thing to go, I don't want to talk about the second thing that goes.
  15. Well said! I had the chance to work with Canadian Forces several times during my 22 year career and enjoyed every minute of it.
  16. I had a nasty hard opening about two months ago resulting in a right brake line snapping off. I rode the risers to landing. I landed hot but I'm pretty good at PLF's' bruises yes, no broken bones. I've already taken two canory control classes and I learned more about flying risers, more than I learned in AFF training. I highly recommend taking a canopy control course after licensure and of course do all the riser maneuvers required in AFF training. The best advise to cut away or not will be from your instructors. Glad everything had a good ending.
  17. Uh...no! Obama's term ends on January 20, 2017. So "time is almost up" doesn't exactly apply. As for the birth certificate, I'm not going there, it's a fools errand unless something very compelling and provable says otherwise.
  18. How many jumps does it take before "it" goes away? I've been told it depends on the person. I'm at 68 jumps...not a lot by any stretch. I began to notice the yips and yaps beginning to go away somewhere around jump# 56. I read your post and it reminds me of me and I know I don't have a twin out there or my dear departed mama lied to me. And I'll bet once you land, pick up the canopy and head back in you're thinking, "Wow that was good, when do I go again?" only to relive the same anxiety as you get closer to getting back on the plane. Well here's the good news I 'spose...YOU'RE HUMAN! You think you're different from the rest of us amigo? The tunnel is a good thing but it ain't the real thing. I've got 30 minutes of tunnel time myself. The DZ is the real thing. The DZ is what separates the tunnel rat wannabees from the rock stars. What my instructors told me I will pass along to you. Don't overthink it! You've got 15 jumps on the books and by now fundamentally speaking...you know the drill! So...you've jumped your pack. Done the 5,500 and 3,500' jumps yet? If not, they are a lot of fun and you'll have much more time than you think you've got to get stable and execute the pull on both these jumps. Relax...you're a skydiver, welcome to the community!
  19. Freedom and liberty do provide for the individual to be and do what appears to be stupid, foolish and hazardous. I don't and won't base jump. That's a choice I made, no one else. The one thing this country has already and quite frankly too many, are busybodies wondering hither and to trying to protect people from themselves. As far as I'm concerned, get the busy bodies off the streets and if they don't comply exhile them to that island Tom Hanks was stranded on, they can "busybody" each other. And yes I disagree with every point you posit.
  20. First, congratulations for making the decision. It's OK to have the butterflies, you're not alone and those who come after you will be in the same situational mindset. Here's some quick perspective to think about. Amateurs built the Ark and professionals built the Titanic. Have confidence in your abilities.
  21. My new rig will be delivered next month. For now, I rent a rig. Having been a student myself in the very recent past, I defer to the students. If there are AFF students, I wait and hang out. I'm at the DZ for the full day anyway and so I spend the time reading the SIM, watching the packing, asking questions etc. Yes , i would rather jump but there's always something to do at a DZ other than jump. When the students are done, I get a jump or two in. It works out quite well. The DZ is a business and profit margin (if you want to call it that) is thin, very very thin. Some DZ's operate month to month, i.e. they don't know if they'll make enough cash to keep operating the next month. So if you want that DZ to stick around for the future for you to have a place to jump, please keep this in mind that a large part of the revenue is made from AFF students and tandem jumps. I think if you engaged the DZO and other instructors, they'd be more than happy to steer you in the right direction on equipment buys and keep a look out for good used rigs up for sale. When you have your own rig, you'll be able to jump whenever you want AND be able to practice packing to your heart's content. Blue Skies
  22. Uh...I think you'd best spend some time on the issue of rape because it's a lot more than some horny man getting a piece of @$$ and in too many cases, the victim winds up dead. Thus IMHO, those who hold to the premise that a woman found in an alley, raped and strangled with her own pantyhose, is morally superior to allowing that same woman to defend her life with a firearm show a clear depraved deficit of moral clarity. My wife and daughter have been NRA trained in the use of fire arms and both pack heat with a CCW permit. Self defense IS the first human right!
  23. Misguided? Uh no! But I think she got too much voltage for that hair "doo" of hers. The brain was of course affected. This presupposes of course that the airhead has a brain at all.
  24. To our friend across the pond (I hope that is a correct assumption, if not my apologies). This is the first time in my 50+ years I've seen a President of the United States so thoroughly snookered hook line and sinker and played for an absolute chump. I think America is strong enough to survive this fool...barely, but the tide will turn once this fool leaves office.
