Perhaps if he stares long enough, he will get an answer from Ceiling Cat.

It's anything but a habit of mine...it's maybe my 2nd post in month somewhat tied to religion. Just something I found that i thought is funny. Even if it's not a habit, posting religious or political stuff is just asking for those who disagree with you to start an argument about it. Though I really didn't see anything very offensive (or funny ) in what you posted. I wouldn't have given it much thought if someone had posted it on my FB. But I wouldn't have posted it myself, because I have friends and family on there who are very religious, and I would feel like I was taking a jab at them.
-
I usually find it annoying when people post religious/anti-religion or political stuff on FB or myspace (whether it's something I agree with or not). I don't say anything about it, but if a person makes it a regular habit, I either delete them or at least block them to where I don't see any of their posts.

. . . a very nice young man. (And at least as perverted as we make him out to be...... But I mean that as something nice! )

Looks like the marriages will be on hold for now.
-
As part of a married couple, each of whom has significant income, I'm sure you are aware that filing as single would result in less tax than filing married joint, and filing married separate results in more tax. In most cases, including mine and probably including yours. Perhaps the marriage penalty is a problem, but I think you're really stretching to make it have anything to do with gay marriage. Seeing as the ultimate goal is to make marriage equal for everyone. Homosexual couples are not wanting to get marriages that are different from straight couples. It's the same-sex marriage opponents who want to keep everything unequal.
-
Not under present law. The states in which homosexuals couples can legally be married may tax them as married (CA and MA do), but for federal taxes they each file as single. In California, there is little to no difference in state taxes for two people with similar incomes, filing as singles or as married, so that is not of concern (MA may be different) For Federal taxes, couples that each have significant incomes pay substantially more tax filing as married than as two singles. If the prop 8 case rises to the Supreme Court, and the legality of same sexed marriages is nationally recognized, then the inconsistent tax treatment will go away. Oh yeah, you're right. But hopefully DOMA will be repealed soon, and then this (and other things) won't be a problem.
-
No, I can't imagine any reason for doing that. Well, what John said makes sense, but I buy gas so few times a month that I think I would notice any suspicious charges.
-
Are homosexual couples forcing you to stay married? Or did homosexual couples write the tax code to discriminate against straight couples who choose to get married? If they are allowed and choose to get married, they will face the same marriage penalty that you do. I'm not getting your point here.

Is Life Sentence Too Harsh For Man Convicted of Ninth DWI?
Shotgun replied to wayneflorida's topic in Speakers Corner
I don't know what prisons do as far as "treatment," but I think that many of them have AA meetings available, and Texas prisons often have SOS meetings available too. But it's ultimately up to him if he wants to do something about it. -

The article says he will be eligible for parole in 5-15 years, so he will not necessarily spend life in prison. -
Is Life Sentence Too Harsh For Man Convicted of Ninth DWI?
Shotgun replied to wayneflorida's topic in Speakers Corner
The level of state-mandated barbarism in the US, imposed through its courts, against people within its own borders, is pretty high compared to most other modern, Western-style, industrialized democratic republics. Most Americans, not knowing any better, have no idea how it compares to the other Western nations, and are quite approving of it. So, what would you guys suggest is an appropriate punishment for someone's ninth DWI? -

Shotgun replied to wayneflorida's topic in Speakers Corner
No, I don't think it's too harsh. But I am curious what his sentences were for the other eight DWI's. (Would some harsher penalities earlier on have kept him from doing this so many times?) It says he will be eligible for parole in five years, so he does still have a chance to get himself together, but he will be off the streets if he doesn't. And I don't think that his age means that rehabilitation won't work. Many people change and get sober late in life, when the consequences have added up and finally pushed them to the breaking point. -
From what I understand, if you ask Remster nice enough, he will be your Canadian slave. For a little while anyway.

I would never do any of that stuff. I'm a nice girl.

They _might_ resume in a week. Doesn't exactly sound final from what I've been reading. Sounds like the judge is giving opponents time to get a ruling from the court of appeals.

I'm not so sure it's the largest source of violence. Politics and competition for resources are pretty big sources. And all the violent crime in our country - I doubt that religion has anything to do with most of it.
-
Religion is also a significant reason why people do good things. I don't know if the world would be better off without it. But the world would certainly be better off with more tolerance and interfaith dialogue and growth within the various relgions (replacing old, unhelpful ideas with better ones).

This is an interesting point. Please elaborate. Oh, I don't know... maybe as some sort of test or something. Well then IMO it has no more credibility than any other book, and it would be unwise to unquestioningly base your entire life on its teachings as many do. I agree. But, given the wide range of beliefs and practices among Christians, I'm guessing that many of them do question (and interpret) the Bible's teachings. Now I'm not sure how they continue to believe it's the word of God, but hey, not everyone thinks the same way that I do. (And I don't really care, except when it is affecting me or hurting others.)
-
It could if it intended to, if the "mistakes" were there for a reason. And I don't think that anyone believes that God actually wrote the book. I think the idea is that man wrote down the word of God, and man later translated that into many different languages, so there is lots of room there for human error. (This is not what I believe, just the reasoning I've heard from some people who believe that the Bible is the word of God.)

I bet he will be ecstatic to hear that his followers no longer like what he has to say. Lookie lookie what I just found. Matthew 5:17-18 "Don't think that I have come to destroy the Law of Moses or the teaching of the prophets. "I have not come to destroy them but to bring about what they said. I tell you the truth, nothing will disappear from the law until Heaven and Earth are gone. Not even the smallest letter or the smallest part of a letter will be lost until everything has happened." So Jesus thinks that the Old Testament is legit?? What does that do for his credentials?? I have no idea what Jesus thinks (thought) or whether he ever even existed. And I don't know why some people believe the Bible to be the word of God but then pick and choose what they want to follow out of it. I personally find the Bible to be of no use in my own life.
-
I believe there are quite a few Christians who only follow the New Testament. I think among the people who consider themselves to be Christians, there is a huge variance in beliefs and practices, so it doesn't really work to group them all together for most things.

If religion is responsible for the bad things people do in the name of religion, then it is also responsible for the good things people do in the name of religion. But I think that people are responsible for their own actions. And if they do things for religious reasons (whether "good" or "bad" - both subjective terms), they ultimately made the decision to do it, so it is a reflection of their own character.

I haven't seen the movie yet, but I read the book that it was based on, and it was very good. I read it on a plane and was having to fight back tears at a couple of places, but it definitely left me feeling more inspired than depressed. I'd like to see the movie too.

OK, I watched this tonight. It was good. It had some pretty scenery, and I really enjoyed the music... "Sometimes falling feels like flying... for a little while." And Bridges was a pretty convincing alcoholic.
