  1. The drinking age does not necessarily apply to serving alcohol. I was legally bartending at 18 even though I couldn't legally drink (drinking age was 21).
  2. I don't know what the age should be, but I agree here. If you're considered old/mature enough to serve in the military, then you should also be allowed to make decisions about putting alcohol (or any other drugs) into your body. And now that I'm an old fart, I think 16 is too young for driving. I remember how I drove at 16, and I wasn't even trying to text at the same time.
  3. I've always found this fascinating too. There will be somebody or somewhere that is obviously not that somebody or somewhere, but for whatever reason I "know" it is them.
  4. This came to me today as a suggestion on Netflix Instant Watch, so I watched it.... and Wow! Absolutely loved it! Some very interesting history, plus the woman is just awesome.
  5. I don't know about other people, but for me, there is definitely a link. I have a life history of excessive nightmares, "waking" during sleep paralysis, and insomnia. I think the nightmares and sleep paralysis sort of forced me to learn lucid dreaming. Extreme fear turning to, "Wait a minute, I've been here before, and this is just a dream." I think I first just learned to wake myself from it. But then I discovered it was more fun to stay asleep and take control of the dream. And now I've gotten where I often become lucid even in regular (non-nightmare) dreams.
  6. I want to reply to this, but..... I don't know! It seems impossible to imagine beyond "reality." Anything that I can come up with, no matter how fanciful it is, is rooted in reality - in something I have heard of before. I can write words and words and words, but they are all limited by the limits of human language. Human language is a limitation in expressing reality!
  7. What? Nobody picked up on that one? Damn, I'm old... I saw it, but I thought, "Naw, it's a lousy place to get bombed." The place I went to on my 21st birthday only served beer and wine, so I didn't even bother to drink. Oh wait, maybe I'm thinking of the wrong kind of "bombed." Yeah, most people in their 30's and up would remember the Terror In The Heartland bombing by Timothy McVeigh I remember it quite well. (Was in my early 20's when it happened.)

  9. I didn't drive quite 1000 miles, but.... I did spend my 21st birthday (many years ago) in OKC, with a very memorable lap dance on stage from three male dancers at a male strip show. Ah, fond memories of OKC, and my innocent youth.
  10. I was thinking about you when I started this thread, because I remember talking about this with you on here some years ago. I've gotten pretty good at lucid dreaming in the last couple of years. I've had some very cool experiences, though many of them are hard to describe. I never really set out to learn how to do it, but I guess being able to do it is my reward for a lifetime of sleeping problems. It's interesting to hear others' experiences on here. The reason I started the thread was because I found myself trying to write a short story that involves lucid dreaming (possibly for a fiction contest), and I started wondering how subtle I could be about it. But since MikeJD reminded me of the movie "Inception," I think most people are probably aware of the idea of lucid dreaming, even if they've never heard it called that.
  11. I thought Obama was gonna legalize all drugs and that we'd all be having our freak flags flying by now. See if I vote for him again.
  12. And then he, himself, was killed by a drug. That was the funny part. He sounded like a pretty nasty person, as well as a hypocrite.
  13. That story is disturbing. And, while I don't usually laugh at other people's misfortunes.... I really couldn't help it with the Bureau of Narcotics "tough guy" who died from cirrhosis of the liver. Guess while he was out busting other people for using illegal hard drugs, he was knocking back a little too much of his favorite legal one.
  14. Yes. Well, mostly being aware that you're dreaming. But of course, it naturally follows that you would then want to control the dream (for most people?).
  15. I might know a little bit, but I would prefer to leave the Mantis People out of this thread. My question here is related to non-drug-induced lucid (awake) dreaming.
  16. I should probably reserve my judgment until I see the whole film. Watching that "comparison" thing on youtube really showed the differences, but that's not a fair way to judge her portrayal. Oh, and just to be clear: When I mentioned Palin's "tough exterior," that was not meant as an insult to her.
  17. That's actually pretty sad. Makes me wonder what made him lose it like that.
  18. Paul, did you watch it on HBO, or do you know of somewhere else to see it?
  19. Yeah, I saw it in the headlines too. But I didn't want to be the one to post it here, because it's just too..... WTF???
  20. I couldn't find anywhere to watch it. Hulu doesn't have it, and I don't want to subscribe to HBO online. I did find this "comparison" thing on youtube though: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2EnbS8Z8uKQ And man, I don't think Julianne Moore was right for that part. I don't know who could have played it better, but Moore is just too sweet and delicate to pull off Palin's tough exterior (IMHO). Has anyone actually watched the film? Is it any good?
  21. I have (overflowing) bookcases in almost every room too. I think it's more of a hoarder thing.
  22. I don't see anything particularly "psycho" in this quote. Watching a lot of porn probably does cause brain changes, as does any repeated behavior, and those changes may be harmful. And I think there is truth in everything else he states as well . . . However, I generally don't believe in protecting adults from themselves, and I think that most adults are not likely harmed by viewing porn, so I'm not for banning it. (Or for banning many of the other individual choices that may be harmful to some people.) I don't think kids should be viewing porn, but for the most part, that's the parents' responsibility.
