    I'm pretty sure that all of the "gay folks" that I know, and those who have been responding to you in this thread, would be perfectly happy with a civil union that had all the same benefits of marriage. But at this time, no such thing exists in the US.

    Perfect solution. Logical, reasonable, fair... I don't think we'll be seeing such a solution from the Bush administration. It saddens me too... especially since this is the president of my country. One of the things I was reading pointed out that if this "gay marriage ban" amendment was approved, it would be the second time in US history that an amendment was made to the US Constitution to take rights away from the people rather than to protect our rights. (The first one being prohibition, which fortunately didn't last.)

    I found the lesions in the pictures to be a bit odd. I do know a bit about meth addiction, and I have never noticed it having a tendency to cause people to have lesions all over the face. The sunken face and the appearance of rapid aging are common, but I don't know about the facial lesions...(?)

    Why do you think that gay marriage is wrong? (That's an honest question; I'm really trying to understand why people are opposed to it if not for religious reasons.) And do you think that homosexuals should be denied the right to marriage just because a lot of people think that gay marriage is wrong? Personally, I feel that allowing same-sex marriage does not really affect anyone other than the same-sex couple getting married, so I don't understand why a lot of people feel so strongly about banning it. Sort of like marijuana prohibition... a case of the moral majority inflicting their idea of morals on the entire population when the subject in question poses no real threat to those who oppose it.

    I'm ok with my position... at least I don't have to look at the Skaggles that way... though when copious amounts of intoxicating substances are consumed, he does take on a strange resemblance to Fabio...

    Which laws were being violated, and do you know the wording of those laws? I seem to recall the licenses being handed out because it had been determined that it was in violation of the Oregon constitution to deny marriage licenses to same-sex couples.(?)

    Wow, from that first link that you posted (emphasis mine): I'd be really curious to see one of these bills that would require churches to hire a quota of homosexuals. I am guessing that this sort of propaganda is a big part of the reason that people are rushing out to make constitutional amendments to ban gay marriage. But aside from that, do you think that gay marriage should be banned because certain religions think that it is immoral?

    Personally, I find it heartbreaking to think that so many people in our country are so eager to make constitutional amendments that take away a fundamental human right from their fellow citizens.

    This is the wording of the Marriage Protection Amendment, which is being proposed to mend the U.S. Constitution: If this amendment ends up being passed, it seems that the part about "the legal incidents thereof" would pretty much wipe out any benefits that same sex couples would get from civil unions. And currently civil unions do not provide the same legal benefits of marriage anyway. People in a civil union may get typical marriage benefits from the state that recognizes their union, but they do not get any of the federal benefits that married couples get. Oh, and as narcimund pointed out, I believe that Vermont is the only state that even allows same-sex civil unions... And, thanks to the Defense of Marriage Act, no other state is required to recognize their civil union.

    I think you're right about most skydivers. And I think that even most people who post here have no problem with same-sex marriage... But from some past threads on this same topic, there are definitely some on here who are strongly against it... One that was particularly interesting where several BASE jumpers (who I would have thought might have a more accepting attitude towards life) were quite vocal in their condemnation of homosexuality and gay marriage, which I seem to recall was mostly for religious/moral reasons (which brings up an interesting question - How does God feel about trespassing? Hmm, but that's getting off-topic ;)

    Ok, I can agree with that... This is true... but I think that the biggest departure from the "traditional" family is having divorced parents... and, as a child that grew up with divorced parents, I can say that I don't think it was the "ideal" environment. I think that a loving family environment, whether that be a mom and a dad, two moms, two dads, or whatever... is better than a family full of conflict. I personally don't think that the gender of your parents has much to do with whether or not you are growing up in a nurturing environment.

    Let me first apologize for bringing this topic up once again; I know it has been argued into the ground on here... But I am writing a position paper on same-sex marriage and trying to come up with a clear reason for why people are opposed to it... So for those of you who are opposed to it, is it mostly a religious and/or moral issue for you? Or is it something else? (Links to websites that provide clear opposition statements would be appreciated too, as most of what I am finding is not very clear.)
