Does anyone have access to a Scanning Electron Microscopy?
Shotgun replied to Icon134's topic in The Bonfire
I can't help you out with access to an SEM, but since you are clearly a fan of both microscopes and ice cream, I can at least point you to a place where you can buy a necktie inspired by the molecular structure of ice cream: http://micro.magnet.fsu.edu/products/stonehenge/benjerry/index.html In other words, I have nothing relevant to add to the thread, as usual. -
Well, if they had allowed you to leave that picture of your turds, then you may have had a chance to meet that 'special' someone on here... but I'm afraid that may have been your only chance.

Actually, this doesn't surprise me at all. I suspect that anyone with real knowledge on the subject realizes that marijuana is nowhere near as harmful as cocaine, heroin, etc. It is absolutely a joke in the 'war on drugs' and it likely leads people to use more harmful drugs, because they try it and wonder why the hell it is illegal (considering that it is way less 'intoxicating' and harmful than alcohol, the most widely-used legal drug)... And a lot of these people might assume that other illegal drugs must not really be so harmful either... I hear a lot of people say that we need to draw the line somewhere, as far as making drugs legal... And it seems to me that the line has already been drawn with the legality of alcohol... And I feel fairly certain that marijuana is on the safer side of that line. It just seems like a huge waste of money to keep fighting a 'war' on such a silly little drug... a drug that doesn't seem to be causing any kind of harm to society, except through its illegal status.

WTF??? Anyone who goes to MEXICO to use drugs - just because small amounts of these drugs have supposedly been 'decriminalized' - is freakin' crazy! My understanding is that the police and government in Mexico are not exactly fair, and the thought of going to jail there would be a pretty damn big deterrent for me, no matter what the 'law' supposedly says... But maybe that's just me???

There is some sort of 'high' that you get from eating really hot hot sauce... It has little to do with the taste. I'm a total wimp when it comes to hot sauce, but I started out with Tabasco and have been working my way up to eating hotter things... Ah, but then there is wasabi - a totally different kind of 'hot'... Man, I love that stuff!

Yes, it would. But my understanding is that God is a damn sneaky little fellow. (And let me apologize now to all of the Christians that I just insulted. I can be a real asshole sometimes. Please forgive me... )

Yes. Well alrighty then Just for clarification, I want to say that I have not jumped the ESB myself... I just know that it has been done. Do a search on Thor Alex to see at least one person who has successfully jumped it.

Check out 'Duckwater' on here... He is the physical embodiment of Cartman. (Really, trust me on this one!) If you've ever wanted to do Cartman then I'll bet that doing Duckwater is the closest experience you could possibly have... But, ewww... I think I just made myself sick even considering such a thing.

Take off this uniform and leave the show... I'm waiting in this cell because I have to know... Have I been guilty all this time??? (Sorry, that's all I could think of when I saw the thread title. )

Good point.

Damnit, Walt... I have just lost all respect for you.

Gee... I wonder if obesity is becoming a problem.
Shotgun replied to ccowden's topic in Speakers Corner
This is not directed at anyone in particular... But I see the obesity problem in our country as part of the problem that we have with addictions in general. I don't think that it has much to do with lack of education on how to eat right and exercise to stay healthy. We have a pretty big problem in this country with psychological illness, especially depression, that causes people to partake in other bad habits (I am all too familiar with this myself). I don't really know what the answer is, but it's something that I think about a lot... We need a lot more research on depression and addiction, and on how our brains work in general... Also, I think that children's mental health should be checked regularly in school, the same way that they get their eyes checked and such. Most mental problems would be significantly easier to treat if caught at a younger age... But again, we really need more research because we don't have very good treatment options at the moment. -
It looks cool...

Very true, Chris. I commend you for your efforts in helping your mom. Man, as humans we face a lot of problems... Compassion is certainly something that we need to have... but as you pointed out, sternness may also be a blessing... -
Oh. I discovered that you were a comic book writer. Maybe that was a different Ryan... But Wikipedia is still fun for finding "facts".

I often use Wikipedia as a starting point for school research... but I realize that it is not necessarily 100% accurate... And actually, I realize that most resources are likely not 100% accurate, so I get my information from many different sources. But when arguing a point on dz.com??? Hmm, well, I'm not out to get a good grade or to save the world through this website, so I honestly don't care too much about what I use to 'prove' whatever silly point I'm trying to prove on here.

should smoking be banned in public places?

So let them have what they want, assuming that they are adults and capable of making informed decisions. -

Well I'm sorry to hear that your chicken didn't turn out so well. But hopefully it will bring you comfort to know that it is likely a million times better than anything that I would cook. -
I'm planning a 666 party on that date, just because it happens to be one of my favorite numbers. (And because I have to plan parties to have an excuse to clean my house. )

Shotgun replied to fireballgrl's topic in Speakers Corner
Alcohol damages a lot more than just your liver. And there's a helluva lot more than 2 million alcoholics in this country, not even counting 'problem drinkers'. A minimum one-week stay in alcohol rehab will cost an insurance company at least $10,000, with little chance of said alcoholic actually recovering. Diseased alcoholics generally live a lot longer than diseased smokers, most likely requiring a lot more health care $. (And no, smoking does not cause lung illness 100% of the time)... I'd be curious to see some statistics that show how much skydiving-related injuries cost to health insurance companies based on how many insured skydivers there are. (I really am curious - I honestly have no idea... except that I have seen some pretty costly injuries, and considering that skydivers are proportionally small in numbers compared to smokers... It would be interesting to know, though I'm fairly sure that no such stats exist.) I agree about beaches, and restaurants too... Though if a particular restaurant allowed smoking, I would probably just not patronize the place... and if I cared enough then I would complain to the management to tell them why I wouldn't be eating at their restaurant anymore. -

That's an excellent point, Sarah. I absolutely agree. -

If there were as many skydivers in the US as there are smokers (covered by insurance), then I'm pretty sure the $ value that skydiving-related injuries would be costing the insurance companies would cause all the self-righteous non-skydivers to demand that skydivers no longer be covered. And drinking is already an equal, if not worse, problem than smoking... With drinking, you have to consider all of the drunk-driving-related injuries that end up getting paid for by insurance companies. It just sounds really funny for a skydiver who constantly professes his love for tequila to be complaining about people who knowingly endanger their health by smoking.
