  1. Would the three strikes law even apply to possession of marijuana? I thought that the "three strikes" (or at least two of them) had to be for violent crimes.(?)
  2. The last time I got a ticket, the cop was a total jerk. Then when I went to pay the fine, the people I had to deal with were total jerks too. So I decided that I didn't want to have to deal with that crap ever again and I changed my driving habits. But now I've turned into an old fart and I try to follow all the traffic laws because I think it's the right thing to do. Anyhow, of course I'm not perfect, and I'll probably get a ticket again one of these days... I just don't understand the attitude of expecting a warning if you get pulled over for speeding. Maybe that's because where I used to live (Austin, TX), I got a ticket every time I was pulled over, so I would just assume I was getting a ticket if I got pulled over again. Sorry to hear you had a bad experience with the cop; I know that always sucks... Now start behaving yourself and maybe it won't happen again. (Hmm, if you knew me then you would know just how ridiculous it sounds for ME to be telling someone else to behave. )
  3. Ok, I don't mean to be an asshole, but... There is a reason why we have speed limits. You are an adult and I imagine that you knew what the speed limit was. You chose to drive over the speed limit and you were punished for it. I see no reason why you should have been given a warning instead of a ticket. If you don't want speeding tickets, don't speed. The cop was simply doing his job. (FWIW, I had my fair share of speeding tickets when I was younger, but I don't speed anymore.) Oh, and I have lots of pretty scars from a wreck I had as a teenager, when I wasn't wearing a seatbelt. I had a similar wreck a few years ago and wasn't injured at all because I was wearing my seatbelt. I've been shown the difference the hard way, and I would not drive without one...

Yeah, that's difficult... It's been pretty time-consuming because I have been spending a lot of time with the new guy and I've been trying to balance that by spending at least as much time with the other two. He was a friend's cat that needed a new home (long story), so he is already four or five years old. I think that because of his age, the two male cats are being pretty territorial. I've been keeping water spray bottles around just in case they decide to start fighting, but so far it's just been a lot of hissing and growling. He's a cutey though... He just now came in and plopped himself down on my desk, knocking lots of stuff off.

Well, his name was already Del... For me, that's the sort of name that just doesn't roll off the tongue, so we started calling him "Del Gato" or "Del Groucho" (his markings make him look like he has a little Groucho Marx mustache)... and then "Delholio" (my husband and I are silly Beavis and Butthead fans , so it's like "Cornholio"). And "Delholio" seems to have stuck...

Well, shooting them would definitely solve the problem... But then I would probably just get three more cats and be right back in the same situation. (Yes, I am a sucker for the gatos.)

We got a new cat a couple of weeks ago - Delholio. He is an addition to the two cats we already had, which have been mostly indoor cats with little exposure to other animals. It has been a lot of work trying to get the cats to adjust to each other, but at least I enjoy hanging out with the kitties... My current prediction is that it will be two weeks before they accept each other (which would mean next weekend), and two months before Del and Iggy (the other boy cat) are cuddling with each other... I think I'm a pretty good "cat mama" and I'm doing everything I can think of to make them get along with each other... But does anyone have any suggestions? Or similar experiences to share?
  8. I suppose it's typical that I am in the lowest percentile group (Porsche Boxster). That seems to be the case with most things in my life... Hmm, does that make me "special"?
  9. Great, now I have that big huckin' chicken song stuck in my head. And I also have this uncontrollable desire to go to Burger King.
  10. You didn't miss the satire warning, did you, Nick?
  11. Typing in "fly" is pretty funny too. Or "lay down."
  12. Those guys have had some great commercials in the last few years. I like the buckin' and the huckin' chickens, but my favorite is still the subservient chicken.
  13. I have heard something along those lines, so I am honestly not sure whether painkillers are considered a medical necessity. But I feel fairly certain that a person could heal from an injury with or without them. This is probably true... And perhaps those who do become addicts do so because they discover that the painkillers work for more than just physical pain.(?)
  14. Are painkillers a medical necessity? I would think that you could heal from an injury with or without them. It might be tough to forgo the meds, but it seems like a voluntary choice to me. So I wouldn't criticize someone who is addicted to street drugs any more than I would criticize someone who is addicted to prescribed painkillers. Regarding most addicts, I think they started out by making a voluntary choice to medicate themselves for some type of pain - physical or emotional.
  15. Yeah, I guess you're right. I suppose it's more the belief in God that I think of as having a placebo effect. I imagine that believing there is a divine being who cares about you... that would be quite a comfort in this crazy world.
  16. Ok, "true" was a bad choice of words. I am assuming that the bible is usually presented to children as the word of God. (At least that's how it was presented in bible study when I was a kid.) So do parents teach children that they should pay attention to some of what God had to say and ignore the rest? Right. But now we're back to the placebo effect that JackC mentioned. And in that case, I can see how the bible might be a good thing (assuming you believe in God; otherwise the effect won't work). But for children developing morals, I think the bible has about as much effect as any other book or any other experience in their lives. In which case it's not really a "moral guide" any more than anything else is.
  17. Being someone who did not learn morality through the bible, I am curious to know how this works. Do parents teach their children that parts of the bible are true and other parts are not? That the children should pay attention to the "thou shalt not kill" part of it, but they should ignore the "treat women as property" part of it (etc., etc.)? Seems pretty confusing for a child... Sorry, I just don't buy the "bible as a moral guide" thing. If a person is capable of picking out the "good" morals from the bible and ignoring the "bad," then it would seem that their morals are already based on something other than the bible.
  18. Isn't that what "gullible and uneducated" always means? And those who agree with one's worldview are "enlightened"?
  19. I have to agree with this one. Being an "older person" going back to school, I have seen more underwear and bare asses than I ever cared to see. Guess I've turned into an old fart, but I just don't get the "exposed butt crack" look. Seems popular amongst the young'uns though... Yep. I guess I can blame my "slowness" on my Southern upbringing. When my ex-husband (who was from England) first went to Texas with me, he asked me why everyone kept waving at us. That really freaked him out.
  20. Oh well, lots of his songs have beautiful violin in them, and they're not all from the Tosca women. But I've seen him play with the Tosca girls so many times, and it has always been amazing!
  21. Is your ex one of the women from Tosca?
  22. Hey, I like brains too... I'm sure I could at least figure out how to make an incision into her frontal lobe.
  23. Just sitting here listening to one of my favorite albums by Alejandro Escovedo... and wondering if anyone else likes his music? I'm guessing he's probably too obscure, but I thought I'd ask anyway... He's one of my favorite artists.
