  1. Wow, that sounds like a pretty good program. And now that you mention it, I do remember getting the "period" talk at school. I think that's a good idea about the parental permission. My opinion is that all schools should teach comprehensive sex education, but I understand that some parents don't approve. By requiring parental approval, all schools could teach proper sex ed classes without causing a problem for the parents that don't want their kids learning about sex from the schools. Seems like a pretty fair deal for everyone...
  2. Funny, when I read your first reply, I looked at your profile - which says you live in Kansas. And I thought, "Oh, he must have lived somewhere other than Kansas at the time." (only because of the creationism thing)
  3. Hard Gay Patrol! hooooooo! God bless his little hard gay soul.
  4. Put a bowl of tuna, or some sort of food that she REALLY likes, outside the cat door. If she doesn't figure it out quickly, pick her up and stick her (gently) through the door, head-first. Then pick her up and put her back through the cat door, leaving the tuna outside. Repeat until she figures it out or gets frustrated, in which case you should let her have the tuna and try again the next day. It helps if you have two people. This has worked for me before, but sometimes just shoving them head-first through the door a few times seems to work.
  5. That sounds pretty reasonable. How long ago was this? And where did you live at the time?
  6. I find that surprising; or maybe, since I don't doubt you, I should say I find it disappointing that your schools didn't teach that. . . I can't say for certain that they didn't teach it. It could be that I just wasn't there when they taught it. (I missed a lot of school.) My mom gave me a good book on the subject though, when I was around ten years old, and I had access to some health books that had a lot of good information. That seems to have worked out alright for me... But I do agree that schools should be teaching the science/health part of it.
  7. Holy Bejesus, that was funny! But hopefully this thread won't inspire me to have any stupid ideas about opening that box of photos in the closet... and scanning some of those pictures from the 80s, with my big bleached-blonde hair and excessive eye liner. (Though it probably will. Nice thread, Rosa!)
  8. I don't recall having any type of sex education when I was in grade school or high school (other than from my parents), but that was many years ago... I'm just wondering - for those of you who have school-aged children or those of you who are teachers (etc.) - what is being taught in schools today regarding sex? Do your local schools teach only abstinence? Do they focus only on HIV/AIDS prevention? Do they teach a full course on human sexuality? Or do they not teach anything about sex? And at what grade level do they teach these things?
  9. I had a wreck when I was not wearing my seat belt (almost 20 years ago). I was turning left on a green arrow, but someone ran the red light and plowed into me, almost head-on. I was driving (and alone), but I was thrown to the other side of the car, where I knocked out the passenger-side window with my shoulder and broke the windshield with my head. I got to wear a cool little tube thingie in my shoulder for awhile to drain the glass, and I pulled glass out of my head for more than a year. I had a similar wreck a few years ago, when a drunk driver hit me almost head-on in front of the Perris dz, but I was wearing my seat belt. I was a bit shaken, and he did about $10K worth of damage to my pickup, but I wasn't hurt at all. I'd say it's a pretty good idea to wear your seat belt.
  10. Mmm, Jack Daniels and Maker's Mark... sounds like my kind of party. Now just throw in a little Woodford Reserve... and who cares what kind of beer anyone brings?
  11. This thread made me start thinking about what it would be like if it did become illegal to talk on the phone while driving, and I guess it doesn't seem all that practical. While I do think it's dangerous, I'd rather see traffic cops spending their time dealing with people who are actually driving unsafely (for whatever reason). And the folks who do stupid things while driving and talking will probably do stupid things anyway...
  12. According to the law right now, I'm over the limit if I've had two beers within an hour. I can assure you that I am a safer driver after two beers than if I'm distracted trying to call someone on my cell phone while driving. I've had far too many close calls with people on their phones who were not paying attention. Sure some people are capable of driving safely while talking on the phone, but there are too many who are not capable. A vehicle is meant to get you from point A to point B; it's not the place to eat your dinner, put on your makeup, talk on the phone, or do anything other than drive. Anyhow, I know I'm in the minority on this topic, so I won't waste my time arguing about it on here. I think that champu summed it up pretty well...
  13. Yep. Creating laws that inhibit everyone in order to correct the behavior of some seems to be the popular approach these days. The UK is having great success with that formula. So you don't think there should be laws against drunk driving?
  14. I went parasailing a couple of times when I was a teenager. I really wanted to skydive, but I was too young, so that was the next best thing. I also took a couple of flying lessons, but I can't remember if that was before or after I started skydiving. It was somewhere around the same time.
  15. Perhaps we should have special licenses for such things. If you prove that you can drive just fine after blowing a .3 on the breathalyzer, then you get a license to drive while drunk. If you prove that you can talk on a cell phone and go through a 4-way stop without forgetting whose turn it is to go, you get a license to drive while talking on the phone. (The 4-way stop is one of my big peeves. It's almost always someone on a cell phone who has no clue whose turn it is.) Yep. And because of this, unfortunately, I think it should be illegal to talk on a cell phone while driving.
  16. Pretty much so..... a HELL of a lot of people sure are doing it now arent they... hence that seems... demographically...... to be normal. Unfortunately, I agree with you. But I keep trying to convince myself that it's not really that way and that I just think it's that way because I'm so cynical.
  17. Is cheating on your spouse considered to be a pretty normal activity?
  18. That was funny... I've never tried Marmite, but I like Vegemite... and my cats go nuts for the stuff. (Well, except for my new cat... but he doesn't like tuna either, so I think he's just weird.)
  19. Shotgun

    Fatality

It turns out that the boy had a congenital heart defect... http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20060630/ap_on_re_us/disney_death And I think you make a good point about all of the speculation that goes on before the facts come out.
  20. Oh. I expected you to have some sort of uppity, tree-hugging, environment-friendly reason... Now I am disappointed in you. (And now I should get back to work before I get myself in trouble ;)
  21. Don't laugh at me. I'm feeling sensitive today. It was an honest question. I know nothing of the ethics of In-N-Out, but it seems like the sort of thing Bill might know about.
  22. Because of the taste? Or some other reason such as the company's ethics?
