I don't have an issue with the PF zippers either. Tony and Squirrels 2-zip design is better than PFs 4-zippers in my opinion, but PFs design isn't so bad that I'd consider it a real negative. Apex BASE #1816

I haven't heard any complaints about the innie-outtie on the Colugo or Aura...only now with the Funk. Why is that? I can't think of an intuitive reason why it would be fine on one suit and not on another. Which leads to my earlier question which went largely unanswered...any issues with this on the new PF suits? I know innie-outtie was an issue on the old Apaches...maybe there's just a flaw inherent in using zippers (which Tony obviously seems to think at this point). Apex BASE #1816

Non jumping partner giving you grief about skydiving?
Bluhdow replied to MrGrumpie's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Start BASE jumping. Then she'll be super stoked when you decide to only skydive. Apex BASE #1816 -
If I was Squirrel I would look at this and consider adding a skydive only option to the Funk. Stiffened leading edge and no innie-outtie. Especially if the alternative is people start modifying your design. PF offers a BASE only option on some of their suits, so it's not entirely unprecedented. Apex BASE #1816

Hmmm...I can think of one. I would also add that, for me, moderate pressurization is important on an acro suit that I'll be flailing all over the place. I've been able to get my Havok into some funky situations (pardon the pun), and the ability to collapse the wings to regain stability is important to me. I've said a few times that I think any safety gains made by the RAD system are over-ridden by the insane pressurization. You just lose your ability to shut the suit down. Some people are cool with that, I'm not. Also, I think the RAD system is much more important for BASE. For skydiving...whatever. It's a nice-to-have option, but not need-to-have, in my view. The Venom Power and V-Race have these same zip-in systems. Any similar issues on those suits? My Power is on order now. Haven't gotten a chance to see the innie-outtie system and how/if it differs from Squirrels. Apex BASE #1816

"They were planning on using GPS located drones holding the flags, but I dont think they worked quite as well as planned, but I can see those being used in the future." Now that's a clever idea. Awesome! Hopefully they can get the FAA to waive the ban on drones for commercial use.* *I'm not sure if that is even a real law or if it would apply, I've just heard about it a handful of times. "A new phoenix-fly website is currently in the works, with updated color designer, suit features and full presentation on the new PF range for 2014 and onward. More news on that soon." Any updates here? Looks like the PF site hasn't been looked at in a long time. Apex BASE #1816

Seems to me like it might be cheaper (and equally effective) to build gates out of tethered balloons instead of helis. It also seems like that would create more consistency with respect to gate location as long as the winds weren't ridiculous, in which case you wouldn't be jumping anyway. Any insight on that? Was it considered? Apex BASE #1816

I wonder if there isn't a better option for the exit vehicle. My initial thought was a large A-Star heli or something, but I could see that being both more expensive and more difficult to get the timing down for a fair exit. Everyone just hucking out of the back of a Skyvan seems to solve the timing problem (though it seems like you can only get 2 out at a time, meaning two will naturally exit in a "pole position" while the other two are in the second row...how was this determined?). But the problem with the van is exactly as you described...there's a decent chance of interfering with one another on exit. Maybe that's just part of the game (e.g. motocross), but it begs the question...is there a better way? Apex BASE #1816

$999 for a PCA into water? Ouch. For that price you could do a few AFF levels to learn basic canopy control and then have someone PCA you off the Perrine into the water. Apex BASE #1816

Thanks Lurch. Appreciate the feedback! "Your alternative is stick with what you've got and work up a really vigilant prolonged-shutdown-and-drop pull sequence to make sure you've got the necessary airspeed to compensate for the lack of a larger PC." Wouldn't a pitch from full flight also generate higher airspeed to compensate for the smaller PC? Though I suppose higher airspeed (in full flight) would also create a larger burble...not sure how those two balance out. On the pocket slider...is that in reference to a Sabre1? I've got a Sabre2...never had any issues with hard openings. Thanks again! Apex BASE #1816

I'm on a Sabre2 135 (1.3 w/l) with a 9' bridle and a 28" PC. Never had any issues with a Phantom, Havok, or Vampire 4. I've got a Venom Power on order right now...any changes you think I should be looking at? Maybe a larger PC...but keep in mind that I also freefly this setup regularly. Thanks! Apex BASE #1816

Rich Winstock Swoop Incident Cover-Up
Bluhdow replied to skydived19006's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
I just have one question: Is this, or is this not, all Barack Obama's fault!?!? God damn country going to hell in a handbasket! Seriously though. Don't let politics ruin skydiving. It's already ruined everything else. Apex BASE #1816 -
Some of the posts here rival the stupidity in the YouTube comments section. It's not real. It's a marketing campaign, and a very good one at that. Apex BASE #1816

A good friend of mine will only jump a Sabre 1 for some reason. WS, freefly, etc. He has no issues with openings after 900 skydives, about 400 of them wingsuit with two different Sabre 1 canopies. He did have a slightly larger slider installed both times though, which is an important side note. They are good WS canopies and can be picked up pretty cheaply. As mentioned above, I think your PC and slider selection will have more of an impact on the openings. Apex BASE #1816

Yes. One time on the ground to test them. I regretted it shortly thereafter. Apex BASE #1816

Should they be calling it "Velocity" really? Does going fast need any more encouragement!?!?!?!?!? Apex BASE #1816

This was posted up on basejumper. Very cool look into the new suit, with video. http://mineralchicken.wordpress.com/vampire-race-quick-test/ Hopefully he does one on the power too. Enjoy. *Edited to add clicky. Apex BASE #1816

Sabre 2 openings and strategies for dealing with them
Bluhdow replied to darrenspooner's topic in Gear and Rigging
I've got a Sabre2 135 loaded around 1.4. I use it for everything: freefly, tracking suits, wingsuiting. I've got about 250 jumps on it. In my experience off-heading openings (as much as 360 degrees, which is then technically on-heading ) are normal. Openings are soft, but I've found closed end cells to be the culprit during openings that tend to snivel in circles. This isn't slider down BASE. Learn to track and get good separation and you'll be fine. The canopy does everything else exceptionally well. Apex BASE #1816 -
Will do. Thanks! Apex BASE #1816
