Huge difference in jump prices
CanuckInUSA replied to CanuckInUSA's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
The DZ charging $15 for a hop n' pop owns their own airplane. This is not a leasing issue. I think CatfishHunter hit the nail on the head. The cheaper DZ (Ogden) is charging their tandems more so that the fun jumpers can be charged less. Try not to worry about the things you have no control over -

Hey I know it's a free market system so there's no need to state the obvious (not really slamming you, just trying to prevent more posts saying the same thing). It was just a really nice surprise when I was told that my hop n' pop at Skydive Ogden would only be $9 and it was out of a Caravan, not a C-182. Just thought I'd stur the pot up a little that's all. I know this one may have already been beaten with a dead horse, but I made two hop n' pops this weekend (with 8 legal BASE jumps sandwiched in between them). On my first hop n' pop I paid $15 (that's right, it's not a type-o, $15 for 4k) and then on the 2nd jump (at a different DZ) I paid $9 for the same altitude. What's up with that? Jumping in southern CA this time of year
CanuckInUSA replied to CanuckInUSA's topic in Events & Places to Jump
I was thinking of heading out to Perris Valley to do some canopy control training in the near term future, but I was wondering if southern CA is still NOT the best place to be this time of year (thermals, dust devils, thunderstorms and all that other fun stuff which goes with a hot climate). So I'm not sure if my money would be best spent if I have to stop jumping at noon or whenever it is that Mother Nature yields her ugly face. Thoughts and opinions anyone? Try not to worry about the things you have no control over -
I'm sure Bridge Day is a great time to be introduced to BASE and to meet many people from the BASE jumping community. But personally I think that the Perrine is a better location for our first 'X' number of BASE jumps. I mean what other bridge in the country is it legal to jump from 24 hours a day 365 days a year. The Perrine is not too tall and not too low and it does have a some what forgiving landing area (though it is still a BASE jump and is still dangerous). I still have so much to experience and learn, but I feel that there is no way in hell I would have my current BASE jumping experience if it wasn't for the Perrine. I am working my way towards jumping other (more difficult) objects, but it's so cool to learn things at the slightly safer comfines of the Perrine. Twin Falls and the Perrine rock!!! Oh and to the original poster of this thread. Make sure you've got your canopy control skills up to snuff before you try a BASE jump. There is some serious stuff out there ready to eat you alive and being able to control your canopy (at least for me) is the most important aspect of the sport. I'm sure some of the more experienced people would have other things to say, but I still feel that canopy control (outside of proper gear knowledge) is the key to having a chance at surviving the BASE environment. Myself and a friend arrived in Ogden at about 5 pm where I proceeded to sign the waiver and manifest for a Caravan hop n' pop (which was tons of fun, in fact it would be nice to pull high and check out the scenery). Then I made a fun cross-wind landing swoop, packed and was back on the road again by about 6 pm. I was hoping to see Johnny and Susy there as I originally met them at the WFFC last year and then got to spend time with them in their magic bus at the Eloy holiday boogie. But I was informed that Susy is ready to burst at the seams and that they haven't been hanging around the DZ too much lately. But both Hunter and Clamor (sp?) remembered me from Eloy and were both very nice to me (as was many other people). I figured you might have been one of those folks hanging around (maybe you weren't there), but I forgot your screen name and wasn't about to walk around the DZ asking who was and wasn't a DZ.COMer. I can't say for sure, but I will try to stop by for another (cheap) hop n' pop the next time I'm coming back from a Twin Falls weekend (I'm planning on venturing out to the Perrine once or twice every month this summer as I prepare myself for jumping in Moab this fall). I'll PM you the next time I'm off to Idaho and maybe meet up on a Sunday afternoon/evening before I make my way back to CO. And I am going to have to take Clamor and Hunter up on the offer one day to check out some of the local exit points they told me about. Who knows, instead of driving to Twin Falls one weekend, I'll just stay in Ogden. Try not to worry about the things you have no control over

Sorry Wingy ... but weren't you supposed to be at the DZ instead of being at home. Hey even though I was only there for about 1 hour, the folks at Skydive Ogden were really nice to me and the scenery was cool too. Try not to worry about the things you have no control over

Damn ... yet another nasty weekend. All the joys and great memories of a good weekend for me (2 hop n' pops and 8 BASE jumps at the Perrine Bridge) are spoiled as yet more people either hurt themselves ... or worse. My heart goes out to all those who cared about Nate (especially his SO, Katie). I didn't know Nate, but it really sucks when things like this happen. B.S.B.D. 0:10:1 No humps ... 10 Jumps in total which breaks down as 1 hop n' pop at the home DZ Friday after work, 8 jumps at the Perrine Bridge in Twin Falls ID and 1 more hop n' pop made at Skydive Ogden on the way back to Denver. Beer owed for jumping at a new DZ to me (Skydive Ogden). Try not to worry about the things you have no control over

Damn ... it looks like a few people didn't read this thread since you started it (as there has been several fatalities as well as injuries in this time). Let's try to be smart out there this weekend people. The sky is a great place to play, but it can be unforgiving to some of the errors we make. I have dated a couple of single moms on different occasions in my life and while I currently have the mindset that I won't go looking to hookup with a single mom, it's not out of the question if and when the fireworks start to fly. So I never say never to dating a single mom. So being interested isn't out of the question. But any potential mate of mine either needs to be a jumper herself or she needs to understand my need and desire to hurl myself out of an airplane or huck myself off of some fixed object. Never-say-never ... Try not to worry about the things you have no control over

Hey Brian, even though I wasn't competing, I too had a total blast and it was good seeing you again. I have you in my sights (just talking shit of course as I have tons of work ahead of myself before I can even remotely think that I'm ready for the "Advanced" PST tour). Last year when I was 39, I briefly dated a whuffo woman who was 24 (initially she liked the idea of dating a skydiver until she found out what it really meant to date a skydiver). For the most part, age was not an issue. But our life experiences were different and in some respects because of this, the relationship didn't work. Of course there were bigger issues than our age difference. But it didn't help either. I wouldn't mind finding someone again who's in their mid to late 20s (assuming they'd be interested in me), but it's more important to find someone who you can share your life's experiences with that worry about age. But age differences can be a hurdle for some. Are there any 20 something year olds who would be interested in a young looking and very young acting 40 year old out there? I didn't think so ... I'm not sure why this thread was started to begin with. I'm going to reply to you Tim because hopefully you know that I respect you, respect your knowledge and your skills and maybe I'd also reply to Nick and/or Doug. But to my knowledge I have not met either one of these guys and it's easier to respond to someone I know and someone I have met. Yes I do agree with Nick that there are multiple personality types in this sport and the newer people tend to be pretty vocal and exuberant towards the discipline. But not all of us newbies act the way Nick portrayed the Stage One people act. Yes video is cool and good to have. But you don't see me running around showing my video to everyone and surely you won't see me running around telling people "look how cool I am, I just went belly to earth, stowed for two seconds". I mean I know that the jumps I make off of the Perrine belly to earth stowed for two seconds are the right types of jumps for me to be making right now, but they are by all means not anywhere close to being bad-ass jumps. They are jumps a newbie like myself make. So that brings me to think why some of the older jumpers (not all of course) are hostile to the new jumpers. Okay if from this point on, no first-timers will be allowed to jump because it's spoiling things for the old timers, well then I guess we are all involved in a dying sport. As far as Dwain and the newbies perspective. Why would I think he was one of the pioneers. I do believe that he was the most talented aerobatic BASE jumper to walk this earth ... to date of course. But for sure I did not believe that he started BASE. In fact who started BASE is not important. The important thing is that BASE does exist and we must respect it. I'm not sure what to say about Doug. I'm sure if I met him in the right environment, that we'd get along (at least I like to tell myself this). But I know he doesn't like skydivers and well I'm a skydiver. I'm sorry, I have fun skydiving (freeflying, tracking, swooping and wingsuit flight). But while I'm a newbie to BASE, I also like to think of myself as a BASE jumper too. Maybe I'm not the sort of BASE jumper that Doug likes, but I'm sorry I'm not BASE jumping for Doug, for Nick or for anyone else ... but myself. In this thread Doug did mention something about this latest fatality in WA state and how people aren't talking about the real issues. So I will ask a few questions: 1) Was the deceased qualified to take a wingsuit off of a cliff. Wingsuit BASE is the main reason why I'm getting into BASE. But you won't see me doing wingsuit BASE jumps until I have a shit load of skydiving wingsuit jumps and a shit load of BASE jumps before I put the two together. 2) Is the object that the deceased died on really safe for wingsuit BASE jumps. Obviously it's doable (two of the three guys succeeded with their jumps). But is a 66% success rate really safe? Is this a marginal wingsuit BASE site? If a newbie like myself starts spewing stuff about being this and that in the sport of BASE. Then yes you more experienced guys and gals have the right to shit down our throats. But not all of us are type "A" personalities who think that we are all that. Some of us are actually out for a few shits and giggles and some of us realize that we have a long road ahead of us. I'll be back at the Perrine Bridge this weekend building some much needed experience, hopefully being safe and maybe some of you out there will also be at the bridge (not directed at you Tim as I'm sure you'll be in CA). New Friday poll: Are you going to, This weekend.......
CanuckInUSA replied to josheezammit's topic in The Bonfire
I was orginally planning on staying local and skydiving ... but my plans have changed. I will travel to Idaho by car with a friend this evening (into the wee hours of the morming) jump the Perrine bridge all day tomorrow, maybe party a little with some of our Twin Falls friends Saturday night, sleep, get up and make a couple more jumps off of the bridge before I make the long drive home back to Denver. So I can't vote in your poll seeing as you didn't include BASE jumping in it. Try not to worry about the things you have no control over -
No the bird Jib speaks of was seen waddling right next to the pond. This is the bird I'm assuming that was hit. But who knows? Try not to worry about the things you have no control over

how did you decide yours?
CanuckInUSA replied to josheezammit's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
I think you find that your interests will evolve the longer you're in the sport and the more different things you try. If you find something that you like, go for it. With 34 jumps, it's best to concentrate on RW right now, but don't be afriad to try FF at any time from here on out. If you want to learn how to fly your canopy (especially if you've had no formal flight training), then seek out canopy instruction and maybe get some jumps in with the CReW Dawgs. And if you feel comfortable under canopy (and people aren't always talking to you about bad things you may have done under canopy) and you want to learn how to swoop. Then go talk to a swooper and start the long road towards becoming one. But remember that becoming a good swooper takes hundreds and hundreds of jumps on each canopy you try from the big ones down to the smaller ones. With so many cool things to do with jumping (for me: freeflying, tracking, swooping, wingsuit, BASE, etc, etc, etc). It's hard not to find something cool to do when I'm jumping. Home ownership is a good thing. Just don't borrow beyond your means and become "House Poor" in order to live in a certain type of house. My mom once gave me some very good advice when I was considering leaving Canada to work in the USA (6 1/2 years ago) and that was: Don't get attached to physical objects. And the funny thing is that the logo will come off all on it's own within it's first 100 jumps. Obviuosly some people have some issues with Icarus and their lack of customer service. I have yet to experience this problem, but then again I haven't asked for anything from Icarus ... yet. I do like the end product though. I am on my 2nd Crossfire2 canopy (in case you didn't know I picked up Jim's 119 off of him) and I love how the Crossfire2 performs. Often I hear or see other people flying different wings complain about this or that and not being able to do this or that with their canopy and I think to myself "hey I don't have those problems". And then I'm left to wonder, am I just a better canopy pilot (probably not) or am I just flying a better wing? Maybe it's one or the other and maybe it's a combination of the two. There are a lot of good canopies out there. I'm just very happy with my Crossfire2 canopy. Try not to worry about the things you have no control over

4th of July Wildwood PST Beach Boogie
CanuckInUSA replied to CanuckInUSA's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
I wanted to talk a little about my 4th of July long weekend experience at the Wildwood PST Beach Boogie. Things didn’t always go as planned during my 4+ days in Wildwood. The fun jumpers had to compete for slots on the Porter after the Skyvan went back to Crosskeys on the weekend to a replace a broken Otter. Plus Mother Nature also decided to mess with us what with her winds and her clouds. So that didn’t help. And because of all of this, some PST rounds were canceled and many of the fun jumpers seemed to have left Wildwood early. But I had a great time nonetheless and got to see the best high performance canopy pilots in the world do their thing. One of my younger brothers and a nephew are in Wildwood, NJ this summer working on the boardwalk and I hung out with them as well as their friends late in the evenings and I got to see these young people’s perspective, who are working the pier, concerning the boardwalk and the people who visit it. But what was best about my weekend was that I met some great people, I experienced some awesome visuals what with jumping onto the beach with amusement park rides to watch and the whole boardwalk atmosphere. And I ended up doing some really neat things in the sky with some good people. I would like to thank all the folks from Crosskeys who made a jump with me in one form or another (Johnny, Jimbo, Dave, Clark, Bert, Stuey, Matty, Doug, Storm, Adam, Will, Elisa, Sarah and Tom). Plus I got to make some fun jumps with Alex and Jeremy from Raeford as well as Jessie from the Ranch. I made 17 jumps in the 4 days of jumping that I was there for (not bad considering the weather, the lack of a big airplane on the weekend and a 30 minute drive to the airport from the beach). I made 8 Skyvan jumps, 5 Porter jumps and 4 Helicopter jumps (including a ride from the airport Sunday morning in the Helicopter to the beach at 1k above the ground). I got to meet two new DZ.COM people while I was there. Dave otherwise know as Vertify was there and Elisa know to us as Dove was there as well. But I’m a little bummed that I now find out that Freeflybella was at the Boogie and I would have liked to have met her. But I didn’t. Anyway, it was also cool to renew existing friendships with the DZ.COMers who were there that I had met before. On the downside, I would have liked to have watched more of the PST rounds. But between myself jumping and Mother Nature canceling some rounds. I will have to be contempt with what I did get to see. Finally, I would like to thank John (DZO of Crosskeys), Jack, PJ, Becky, Mel and Kimmy as well as any others who were a part of organizing and supporting us jumpers this weekend. I did so many cool things and those memories will forever supercede any negative things which may have happened. I hope that the Wildwood PST Beach Boogie returns next year and I hope to return. Oh and on my way back to JFK to catch my return flight home yesterday. I had some spare time so I stopped off at ground zero where the World Trade Center once stood and paid my respects to those who's lives were lost on that horrible day. Try not to worry about the things you have no control over
