  1. Forget the notion of International Law (as we all know that in reality there is no such thing ... nations are free to do what they what to do and when other nations disagree with what a certain nation has done, sanctions and war are the result). But I would like to know why is okay for one nation (Israel as an example) to have WMD while another nation isn't? Double standard I say. Try not to worry about the things you have no control over
  2. I'm sorry to hear about Fatcat. I have a 14 year old fat cat myself (her name is Scratchy) and while she appears to be in decent health, I'm sure I will be where you are today in the future. Blue Skies Fatty ... Try not to worry about the things you have no control over
  3. Do a little research on how the Liberals have alienated many Western Canadians (like the old National Energy Plan ... now defunct) and you'll have an idea as to what I'm talking about. Try not to worry about the things you have no control over
  4. Don't forget to include a Tonya Harding/Nancy Kerrigan boxing match every Tuesday evening. Try not to worry about the things you have no control over
  5. If you're referring to the War of 1812, we actually defeated you guys back then. But that was when our military used firearms as weapons. Nowadays the Canadian military has to use hockey sticks and beer to beat back our enemies. Seriously, Canada would be better off if both Fox News and Al Jazeera were not allowed into the country. But allowing Al Jazeera and not Fox News is pretty fucked up as far as I'm concerned. Then again it wouldn't surprise me as one of the reasons why I moved to the USA back in January of '98 was due to my frustration with the arrogant Liberal government (which is controlled by Ontario ... or should I say Toronto ... which has this huge Arab population). 6. Yes WGN could have should have been on the list. My bad ... Oh and I always thought that FOX had their heads up their asses in terms of their "fair and balanced" crap. But that was before I made the mistake of watching CBN (the one I voted for). Try not to worry about the things you have no control over
  7. Okay not that I'm confusing you with Jimbo. But why did I think you were living in NJ instead of FL? Maybe I was confusing you with Jimbo. Try not to worry about the things you have no control over
  8. So who do you think is the most bias partisan political TV news media source? I omitted networks such as TBS, TNT, USA because they don't seem to have a nightly TV news show and it is also possible that I left off some networks which you have that I don't have. And if I have omitted something that you feel belongs on this poll, then by all means talk about it. PS: By the way, CBN is the "Christian Broadcasting Network". Plus I also omitted "Comedy Central's The Daily Show" because I felt that it wasn't really in the same category as the networks mentioned in the poll. 9. Well I guess Kerry is just trying to live up to the expectations of what it takes to be president. Clinton == Liar Bush == Liar Kerry == Liar Try not to worry about the things you have no control over
  10. Well I may have painted more of a sinister picture than I needed to. But the bottom line is that when the market goes up for a certain time period (usually a day or two), then you know there is going to be a pull back. In fact I think I had more success shorting stocks than I did going long. It's all fucked up for us little guys when you are not in it for the long run as you never know what'll happen with the futures market (the trading going on before the market opens and after the market closes). 11. Hmmm ... it's also nothing new to sports or other nationalities ... anyone remember Tonya Harding and Nancy Kerrigan? Try not to worry about the things you have no control over
  12. Money is made and lost regardless of whether the market is up or down. The money managers on Wall Street control the trends and we little people have no idea as to what direction it go on a given day (why would they want to share this info with us when it is us they wish to manipulate in order to make their money). This is why we are told not to try and time the markets and to instead invest for the long term and invest at regular time increments to dollar cost average. Several years ago (before I was a skydiver) I tried to play their game and in some cases I got lucky (guessing if I should go long or short on a given day). But in most cases I lost. I still have a respectable amount of money in the markets, but the money managers pretty much fucked me ... or should I say I allowed myself to be fucked by them trying to play their game. So ... several days ago if you remember the market was up (the money managers decided to drive prices up) and now there is a pull back going on (the money managers decided to drive prices down). Remember money is made and lost when the markets goes up and down and unless you are privey to the direction the market is going, there is no way you can win. Is this fair? No ... but that's just how the system works. They do this to make themselves rich to to keep the rest of us poor. It's just how the system works. If you want to invest in the markets, do so at regular increments and invest for the long term. It's the only way to preserve your investments for that rainy day. 13. Crossbraced canopies exist to allow a higher wing loading beyond the point where a non-crossbraced canopy would cease to function properly and thus allow the person jumping the crossbraced canopy to fly at higher airspeeds and get longer swoops. Do you really want to be zooming around the skies at high air speeds in the BASE environment? Maybe I don't have enough knowledge of parachute construction and maybe I'm not looking beyond the box. But to me crossbraced canopies are only flown once you've maxed out the performance of your conventional highly loaded canopy and have little use in the BASE environment (unless you've got balls of steel ... or was that just a steel plate in your head). 14. Give the man a break. I mean after all you didn't think he was smart enough to know any better did you? Now you'd never see Clinton make that mistake. Of course he'd have a copy of Penthouse inside of the children's book. Try not to worry about the things you have no control over
  15. I made a mistake in creating this poll. But I can't take it back. What's done is done. 1) Yes there are some crazy people trying to kill you guys in Israel and I do understand your desire to try and protect yourselves. 2) You guys helped create the oppression these people feel and yet you offer little towards trying solving the problem. 3) It is possible that there is no solution and for that I am truly sorry for both cultures. But what I don't understand is why the people who have some control over their own destiny continue to want to exist is such dangerous part of the world? 4) I personally want to live somewhere where I don't feel I need to live behind a wall. I want to live somewhere where I can talk to my neighbor and get to know my neighbor. My neighbor and I may not agree with each other, but we respect each other's right to live in peace. Finally (and this applies to many different cultures and countries as well as people here on DZ.COM). I find it sad and amusing at the same time when the patriotism gets in the way of people's rational thoughts. Often you hear people complain that they are pissed that this group or that group is terrorizing me and my people. But very few people ever try to see it from the other guys side. I mean can you blame Iraqis for wanting to kill Americans? Really think about this for a second. Put the shoe on the other foot. What if Palestine had all the weaponry and the support of a super power. Would the Israelis or the Americans stand by while the Palestinians or Iraqis invaded their respective homelands without trying to put up a fight? Geez ... what do some of you expect the oppressed to do? Nothing? Yah right ... you'd be fighting back just as the Iraqis and the Palestinians are. 16. Class I medicals (for ATPs) are only good for six months. Class IIIs (for private pilots) are good for 3 years if you were under 40 when the medical was issued and only 2 years if over 40 on the date the medical was issued. But you are correct in that the medical is still valid for a lower level once the higher level expires. I'm a little rusty on my class II (for commecial pilots) expiration times. It's 1 year if I'm not mistaken, but I'm sure someone like pilotdave or diverdriver will correct me if I am wrong. Try not to worry about the things you have no control over
  17. When you are under canopy there will be objects on the ground which will appear to move below the horizon. If you do nothing to control inputs of your canopy, you will over fly these objects. Likewise there will also be objects on the ground which will appear to rise with the horizon and you don't do anything with you control inputs, you will not make it to these objects. But there will be a spot on the ground which doesn't move up or down. It remains stationary and only gets bigger. Once again if you do nothing with the control inputs of your canopy, this is where you are going. So after opening, you've cleared you skies of other canopies (being close to you), you've done your controllability check and after opening procedures. Start evaluating your sweet spot. If you desired landing target starts rising with the horizon and you can not extend your glide slope. Well it's time to start thinking about finding an alternate landing area. And you need to have selected exactly where you plan to land by 1000 feet. As far as the rest of your story, it's hard to understand what really happened. If I'm not mistaken, are you telling us that you initiated your deployment in the neighborhood of 4k yet you were only under the saddle by 1.5k? Well either you experienced a high speed mal (which you needed to react to faster) or you initiated your deployment much lower than 4k as canopies just don't take 2.5k to open. But it's not my place (nor anyone else here on DZ.COM) to pass judgement. You need to talk to this coach and maybe an instructor at your DZ. But I'm glad things worked out. Don't fall into that trap. Skydiving may appear to be safe. But it's not. It is a very unforgiving environment when the shit hits the fan and believe me the shit does hit the fan (which you may already have experienced if you indeed did have a high speed mal). 18. I was enjoying this thread when we were talking about PhillyKev's up and coming roof top party where some of us wouldn't be taking the elevator down to the street level. But that was before he posted pictures of the roof top and the building across the street. Now it's back to being one of those plain and nasty threads. 19. I'm sorry about your injury. I too hurt myself last Saturday (not seriously) when I purposely downwinded a landing through the swoop course in 7-8 mph winds. I ran out my the landing and never crashed, but the force on my right foot when I first touched down was strong enough to cause some sort of damage and I may miss jumping this weekend. Anyway ... I digress ... If you can believe this, the tandem master did the right thing. When jumping in high winds, the normal flare techniques are not needed. Usually the first portion of the flare is used to arrest the horizontal aspect of landing and the second part of the flare is used to arrest the vertical descent. So in high winds, there is little to no horizontal penetration and that part of the flare should be omited. The risks we take when doing a full flare in high winds is that our bodies can be located forward of the center of gravity and the canopy is then trailing us and the results are than we are slammed to the ground on our backs. I'm not sure if I explained this the best way, but just know that the normal full flare when jumping in high winds is not the thing to do. As to what exactly the TM did with his flare is hard to know as I and the rest of us here on DZ.COM didn't see it. Best of luck with your healing process. The worst part for me is knowing that I shouldn't be jumping anytime soon, but I want to jump now. But I'm old enough and hopefully will use good judgement this weekend. Like jumping my Spectre in moderate winds instead of my Crossfire2 and shooting accuracy landings instead of swooping. Or better yet, just not jumping. Maybe MotherNature will save me by raining on us this coming weekend. Try not to worry about the things you have no control over
  20. Welcome to our world. Isn't it great? Can you fill in a few missing details for us here? How long did you track and were you tracking through clouds? On most of my freefly jumps I will break off with the people I'm jumping with at about 4.5k and will track like a MotherF###er for about 5-7 seconds at which time it is time to start thinking about deploying somewhere around 3k. Now my freefly speeds will be different than the speeds you were jumping at, but the point I am trying to make is that there is a finite amount of time that you can track before it's time to get down to business. Seperation is good, but you don't have to be a mile away from the person you jumped with to have a safe deployment. Plus I asked you about falling through the clouds as clouds do have a way of taking your breath away. And I'm not talking about not being able to physically breathe, I'm talking more about anxiety levels. Please please please please don't fall into that "get-back-i-tis" syndrome. Too many people have been seriously hurt or killed because they thought they could make it back when they couldn't. By 1000 feet AGL, you already needed to have selected the landing area that you know you can make. If this means landing off, then that's what you do. Do you know about the sweet-spot trick under canopy? Try not to worry about the things you have no control over
  21. Once again, I am a member of P.E.T.A. People Eating Tasty Animals So don't fuck with me. I all seriousness. This thread was started as a joke in the "Bonfire" area and was moved over here by a Greenie when some people started to get serious with their talk. But little did I know when I started this thread that there was actually a PETA thing-a-ma-bob controversy going on with KFC and some chicks. 22. I watched a very small amount of the Tour de France tonight on OLN and what I saw when they showed Lance Armstrong was a lot of people cheering him on. In fact virtually everyone along the roadside was cheering him. Sure the French are more likely to cheer for one of their own, but at the same time they are cheering on Lance because of what he is doing, not where he is from. Did someone spit on him? If they did, then they are no better than an ignorant fan at who littered the when things didn't go their way. You really need to lighten up dude. You are taking things on these boards way too seriously. And of course you're not alone. I'm sure you enjoy skydiving and I don't want to assume things. So if what I'm about to say isn't 100% correct, then please know that I am saying this as a joke first (possibly as a friend even though you and I have done nothing but butt heads these last few days) and being serious second. But maybe if you jumped more, you'd be thinking more of why we are on this website to begin with and not here to slam each other because we see the world differently. But if you really are more interested in confronting people with different politcal views, then might I suggest you go hangout on some Yahoo forum where slamming people is the norm. Sangiro has given us a gift and we should be jumpers first and share our jumping experience and knowledge with each other instead of spending all our time fighting with each other. I mean look at your moniker "PeacefulJeffrey", but lately you've been anything but peaceful. Hopefully you know where I'm coming from? Okay enough of the olive branch ... let's drop'em ... but don't forget that I've been playing hockey for 35+ years and have played at some pretty high college calibre levels and have had my share of fistycuffs in the corners. And I am a very young and fit old guy. Try not to worry about the things you have no control over
  23. Hmmm ... looking at the current results of the poll (obviously not scientific), we see that GWB and Clinton are well ahead of everyone else with TheAnvil holding solid in 3rd place ... now how did he manage to be grouped in with all these presidents? Could this be because these two presidents are fresh on our memories or could it be because: 1) Clinton is a liar and a womanizer. 2) GWB is a liar and just down right dangerous. News at eleven ... Try not to worry about the things you have no control over
  24. Hey Jib ... I'm not sure what the prices are in Joisey, but here in CO at McAir Aviation (Jeffco's largest FBO) a 160hp 172 will run you about $80/hr, a 180hp 172 will be about $90/hr to $110/hr (they have some modern SP models). The 182s I was checked out to fly ranged from $90/hr to $120/hr (it all depended on the avionics package in each aircraft) and the 206s (I never got checked out in these because they wanted 500 hours and an IFR rating which I didn't have) were over $160/hr. One of my favorite aircraft was a low wing 230hp Piper Dakota (because hardly anyone rented it and I could get it virtually whenever I wanted it) and it ran at about $110/hr if memory serves me correct. And you've got to remember that if you want to fly above the rocks (mountains) here in CO you needed a high performance aircraft (200+ hp). Try not to worry about the things you have no control over
  25. It'll cost you a lot more than that if this is what you think you'll spend to be commerically rated and flying jump planes. Remember to get you commercial you'll need the hours, plus you'll need time on a retractable. Plus while you don't need an IFR rating and/or multi-engine time to be commercial, you are going to want to fly more powerful and advanced aircraft. And the insurance companies will like you a whole lot more if/when you are IFR rated. I ran into the guy who runs the FBO I trained at yesterday while at lunch and explained to him why he hasn't seen me in over a year and we got to talking about how the FBO has expanded. They're added two Seminoles and when I asked how much those puppies cost to fly he told me over $200/hr (not including the instructors time to get checked out in them). And a Seminole isn't even a turbine aircraft if I'm not mistaken. Now I'm not sure about what DZ you may be thinking of working at, but when I first started skydiving, I talked to the DZO about his basic pilot's requirements and he told me at a bare minimum he wanted 500 hours, but that he had plenty of other guys with many more hours than that and that I would likely need to whole sche-bang 1000+ hours, commercial rating and multi-engine (turbine). I don't want to discourage you from becoming a pilot (being a pilot rocks). I'm just want you to know that it'll likely cost way more $$$ than you are currently thinking. Try not to worry about the things you have no control over
