  1. Why not? She was BASE jumping. It can happen to anyone of us and those of us who also BASE are only adding to our odds of it happening to us one day. The disturbing thing is that she went in flat and stable. It's not like she was pulling some high risk acrobatics off of a sketchy object. She will be missed though as she was one of the biggest (funniest) post whores we've ever had here. BSBD ... Try not to worry about the things you have no control over
  2. I don't know what's going to happen and I'll deal with it when it does happen. But I sure as hell am NOT going to believe in something written many many many moons ago (by humans) in some dumb book when we had almost zero knowledge of science and the universe around us. There may or may not be a creator and there may or may not be an after life. But I'm positive it's not the man made version so many people want us to believe (and give money to) in order to keep the lies perpetuating. Try not to worry about the things you have no control over
  3. Something about Abbie jerking off in the vistors center bathroom? I could be way off. Try not to worry about the things you have no control over
  4. I was planning on bringing it regardless. So yes you can use it if yours isn't ready. I don't know ... you sure you've got enough jumps to handle it? Yes you can jump it, but not during the comp. Try not to worry about the things you have no control over
  5. Well since I offered to let him jump my backup canopy (which happens to be his old canopy before he sold it to me), I'm guessing that he wants to stay on the side lines giving us shit. So I wouldn't rush. Try not to worry about the things you have no control over
  6. So you'd rather talk shit than compete? Oh well ... bring it on ... Not sure yet what I'll be able to do since I no longer have easy access to a pond. But don't be surprised if there is a big "splash" involved somewhere and yes I fully expect to come in (likely) dead last in freestyle. Shit if you're not competing that just leaves myself and Dave as the only amateurs at this event? Try not to worry about the things you have no control over
  7. Your old 103 will be making the trip and I was only thinking of using it when I was going to try (probably unsuccessfully) some freestyle moves. Plus it's got a new line set on it. Try not to worry about the things you have no control over
  8. I wanted to resurrect this thread when I first head about the bad news today ... but at that time the news hadn't gone public yet. High: To have been able to meet and share the skies and/or and exit point as well as share some drunken laughs with these two great women Holly Kish (FreeFlyHol) and Shannon Dean (GirlfallDown) Low: Knowing that we've lost two great women to the skies. Shannon (if there is a heaven) I know that Holly will be there to welcome you with open arms. We love you both and miss you both. Try not to worry about the things you have no control over
  9. I'm not going to say anything except ... #### me. BSBD to the fallen jumper and all those who have been touched by this person. Try not to worry about the things you have no control over

    TF incident

My comments aren't directed at Jason. They are directed at anyone showing up at a site like this bridge and saying, "Aghh that's just boring, let's do this way instead because it will look way cooler". Yes I know this, I have met him and his brother. Try not to worry about the things you have no control over

    TF incident

First off these comments are NOT directed at TreeJumps ... At the risk of alienating myself from some in the BASE community ... WTF people? Are some of you getting so bored with your jumps that you've decided the only way to have fun is the push the envelope to the point where people are dying and/or seriously getting messed up? After watching the video of the successful jump from last year, it's clear that this is the case. What's next? Oh and don't forget, whatever crazy jump some of you guys feel you need to do because you're bored and/or need to make a name for yourself, don't forget to get video. BASE jumping is not safe to begin with and it sure is as dangerous as you want to make it and the trend is obviously towards how dangerous can we make this. Here's hoping that Jason can make a full recovery, but it's time people start waking up. Try not to worry about the things you have no control over
  12. a) Because they didn't think before they acted (the #1 reason) b) Because they don't want the others crossing it once they left. I'm not fond of my current job and some (not all) of the people I work with. I know I'm out of there in the fall of this year as I'll be leaving the current city I'm living in and going to another one I know I'll like better. But I'll likely need a job reference for my next job, so I need to keep my trap shut and tolerate the crap at my current place. So no bridges will be burned by this camper. Of course if I didn't need the job reference, my dynamite and charges would be getting good usage. Try not to worry about the things you have no control over
  13. Never said mountaineering was a safe activity. There is a woman who I work with who recently summited Aconcagua (South America's tallest peak at 22,835 feet) and while I believe she knows this, I had a hard time at work trying to convince some people that she was taking just as many risks with her life than I was being a skydiver. Everest has just turned into a commercial mountain with many of the world's best climbers now seeking other peaks to get away from the crowds and the litter. 14. I’ve got a ####ed up Canada Customs story for you. Last year while still living in Colorado, my Sony camcorder malfunctioned and I brought it in to a local Denver repair shop to have them fix it. The repairs took a long time to fix (6+ months), so long that by the time the camcorder was fixed I had already moved back to Canada. When the camcorder was ready to be shipped back to me, I told the shop to clearly label on the box as “repairs” which while they could have done a better job with the label, it was labeled. Anyway, Canada Customs wanted to charge me $100 for customs duties on a new product. WTF I said. This was a camcorder which was purchased by myself while I was living and working in the US and the only reason why it wasn’t with me when I returned to Canada was because it was in the shop for repairs. Well after some frustrating telephone calls to FedEx (having to provide proof of purchase receipts and all that sha-bang) I got my $100 duty lifted. But I still had to pay $50 for customs brokerage fees. Sharks I tell you, they’re all a bunch of sharks just waiting to prey upon everyone and anyone in order to make a buck. Free trade my ass … there is no such thing. Try not to worry about the things you have no control over
  15. I don't want to slam you, but yes it's clear that you don't know much about Everest and mountaineering. First off there was a specialty built helicopter which did indeed make it to the top of Everest a few years ago, but it was the exception to the rule. A normal rescue helicopter has no chance of making it up that high. The air is just too thin to allow the helicopter to fly. Secondly, climbers know that their bodies start to die above the death zone (approximately 26,000 feet MSL) and with Everest topping out above 29,000 feet, it takes a monumental feat to be able to rescue someone who's faltered in the death zone. Everest is littered with corpses of failed climbs. A hundred or so of them lay up there along with all the spent oxygen bottles and other climbing gear. It is the highest graveyard/landfill in the world. This seems to be a particularily bad year on Everest (like '96), but climbers are dying on it every year and will continue die now that commercial climbing operations market Everest to the "I need to check that offer before I die" crowd. A few years back before I got into skydiving and was into mountaineering, I wanted to visit the Everest region and climb a semi-technical peek (like Island Peak) and maybe visit base camp. But I have no desire to attempt to climb (and die on) Everest. Try not to worry about the things you have no control over

  17. I was reluctant to vote since I didn't see an option which I fit into. I ended up voting for "No nice and slow" but it was more like "No ... but I've been lucky a few times". I didn't go cross-braced until I had over 900 jumps and only recently found myself on a sub 100 footer (just barely under 100 I might add). Plus I had received some canopy coaching several times before I was on a cross-braced and order up some more coaching soon after going cross-braced. But I did progress at a faster rate than most canopy nazis would recommend. I've had to dig myself out of the corner on a Sabre2 190 and Sabre2 170 a couple of times and I'm sure I would have been a statistic had I been on a smaller canopy. I seemed to fair okay on my Crossfire2 139 and 119 without any major corner incidents, but it wasn't until I got some high performance coaching from Mr Slaton while on my 119 that I started to understand what to do up there. I did come close in the spring of 2005 on a sunset load with a Velocity 111 as I spent too long trying to aquire the red entry gates in the flat light and definitely dug myself out of my grave on that occasion. There there has been one scary landing in competition (I should have aborted and taken the donut) as I tried to carve into the course on a failed approach. Plus I learned how painful a rear riser stall can be during a downwind speed carving course at the CPC Champsionships (don't confuse ground speed with airspeed). So it's not like I haven't been hurt swooping. I just (knock on wood) haven't femured or anything. Each and every one of us (including those with thousands of swoops) is capable of messing up. Don't ever let your guard down. But patience, a good attitude and coaching can go a long way towards making us better swoopers. It's not the canopy, it's the pilot controlling the canopy. PS: I got more serious with my swooping in the summer of 2004 after I came close to taking someone out on a head down freefly jump. After that incident I told myself to slow down (freefly wise) and concentrate on my canopy control. Ever since then I've done tons tons of high and low altitude hop n' pops and my freefly skills aren't as good as they once were. But I am a better canopy pilot because of this. 18. I work with a couple of Iranians and these two guys are very nice people. They are not animals as you claim. As stated earlier, this story was a case of very bad journalism (by my own ####ing countrymen to say the least). But your reaction to some false journalism is frightening. Need I remind people to check your news stories through multiple sources before you believe everything you read. Try not to worry about the things you have no control over
  19. I received/experienced two pieces of news today which put a smile on my face. My US tax return refund arrived today (I paid way too much tax last year only working 3 1/2 months in 2005) and because of this my June and August Colorado trips are already paid for (plus the JVX is now offically paid off as well). And the 2nd piece of good news was that I was able to jog across a road with my bum leg meaning that I should be good to go for this swoop comp. I doubt I'll be jumping this weekend since I'd hate to re-injure the leg by rushing back too soon, but then again, rain is in the forecast (again) for the Vancouver area so I doubt I'd be able to jump even if I was healthy. But hopefully I can get some practice in the weekend before the swoop comp and of course I will be arriving a day ahead in Colorado to get re-adjusted to jumping there. PS: I miss the sun of CO as this daily deluge of rain in Vancouver BC sucks!!! Try not to worry about the things you have no control over
  20. WTF? Comic books? You sucked me into this thread thinking I was going to watch some new Ghostrider and Superman freestyle swooping videos. Try not to worry about the things you have no control over
  21. Okay so I'm not the sharpest pencil in the box. But I'm not dull either. Try not to worry about the things you have no control over
  22. Check out this link to an old'ish post I made in the swooping forums concerning "clickys". Oh by the way ... I don't know who to cheer for in this World Cup. Historically I've cheered for Brazil, but they are starting to come off as pretty arrogant when it comes to soccer (or should I say football) and I'm starting to build that "anyone but Brazil" attitude. I think I will cheer for the underdogs ... but I can't seriously think about the World Cup while the Stanley Cup playoffs are still going on. 23. So how many of you have seen the movie "Waiting"? It's a funny movie about people working in the restaurant industry. There is one aspect of the movie which is kind of disturbing (I'm not talking about the cooks messing with the food) and for those of you who have seen the flick, you should know what I'm talking about. But the reason why they do this "topic" is explained near the end of the movie. As someone who works in the IT world, I got a kick out of "Office Space" just as I'm sure restaurant workers would get a kickout of this movie and/or convience store workers would get a kick out of the movie "Clerks". In closing, no matter how frustrated you are at a particular restaurant, don't #### with the people handling your food. Try not to worry about the things you have no control over
  24. Socially I'm in the middle. But economically I've been a conservative for a long time. Try not to worry about the things you have no control over
