Why Does the Army Use Roundies
CanuckInUSA replied to two40's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Rounds don't use up as much altitude when they open plus their openings are more reliable. So the army can let the troops out on low passes with rounds. Try not to worry about the things you have no control over -
How to kill your friends
CanuckInUSA replied to WeakMindedFool's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
huh. You should cut him some slack here. I know in my 4 1/2 years in this sport, I for sure HAVEN'T seen it all and I still have tons more to experience and learn. But if you took his current jump numbers (sure who knows if he can sustain the pace he's been on) and add it up over 16 years, he'll have over 7000 jumps by that time. This sport has a way of people judging others for all the wrong reasons. Try not to worry about the things you have no control over -

1st Cutaway = Scared to Jump?
CanuckInUSA replied to MagicGuy's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Instead of micro analyzing everything said in my post (then pass judgments on what was said for either the right or the wrong reasons) you appeared to have failed so see the progression of the EPs that I've experienced where the first mal was "shit let's get all this bad stuff away from me" and get that reserve out, to my last mal where I was able to calmly save my life and save some gear at the same time. What will happen on my next mal? I don't know I haven't experienced it yet and a lot will depend on what sort of mal it is (spinning on my back versus some other scenario). Plus yes I am perfectly aware of the dangers of going after gear while it's in the air. Even though I didn't know Nate Gilbert obviously if someone of his skill level can be killed going after a canopy, then someone of a lesser skill level can also die (I thought my disclaimer of saying a lot would depend on circumstances would prevent people like you from passing judgement). But also know that my last 900 jumps or so have been almost exclusively been dedicated to canopy control. I am no longer the stereo-typical freefall only type of skydiver. I have time under my belt flying relative to other objects in the air. So pass judgement if you feel it is your right and your need. I don't care. One of the biggest problems with humans is that they can't seem to stop judging others and instead take people for who they are. Try not to worry about the things you have no control over -

So who got a Christmas bonus or gift from their boss?
CanuckInUSA replied to SkydiveStMarys's topic in The Bonfire
What's a Christmas Bonus? I have never received one of these so I wouldn't even know what it looked like if it was sitting under my nose. Try not to worry about the things you have no control over -
You know it's unfortunate some people feel the need to make such comments. I thought we were all in agreement that when it comes to swooping, it's the pilot and not the wing as the largest determining performance factor out there. But I guess I was mistaken. Obviously some people seem to think otherwise. I would absolutely love to be there. This is "THE" event of the early season to be at regardless if someone is a competitor or just a fan of swooping. I would love to renew old friendships and make new ones. I would love to watch some of the best canopy pilots in the world do their thing and I would like nothing better than to be able to compete against some of these world class pilots. I think we all know that this "part-time" competitive swooper would likely finish near the back of the pack when competing against a bunch of people who are "full-time" skydivers and who having been doing this a lot longer than some of us lesser experienced competitive pilots have. But it would still be a blast to be there competing. However ... I regret to say that this JVX pilot, no let me say this Velo pilot (I also own a Velo and have no intention of selling it anytime soon) will not be there because: 1) I recently started a new job and I can not get the time off of work this early in the game. 2) I'd be coming from the other corner of North America about 3000 miles from Sebastian FL and the airfare alone would cost me my left nut, not to mention car rentals, hotels, food, drinks, practice jumps and competition jumps. Finally and most importantly … 3) I'm not current since it's been mid-October since my last swoop (sucks to be me living where I live except to say that I get to live for cheap in a house that I own with a very small mortgage) and I didn't think it was such a smart move to be showing up to such a major high profile event not being current. So here's hoping that you folks who are fortunate enough to be there (competing as well as just watching) have a good time and I look forward to seeing video from the event. I will do my best to get to another swoop competition in the not too distant future when I've built up some vacation time with my new employer and more importantly when I'm current again as a competitive swooper. And you know what, I will be bring my JVX (possibly my Velo as well) and I will have no issues whatsoever with these "full-time" world class swoopers kicking my "part-time" ass because I know it's the pilot first and not the wing which is the biggest influencing factor in how we perform out there. 1st Cutaway = Scared to Jump?
CanuckInUSA replied to MagicGuy's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
On cutaway #1 I threw both handles. On cutaway #2 I threw just the cutaway handle but held on to the reserve rip cord. On cutaway #3 I held on to both handles. Cutaway #4 hasn't happened yet, but not only am I hoping to hold on to both handles, but I'm also thinking of going after my freebag (assuming I won't put myself over a bad place to be landing my reserve). The more we jump, the more acclimated we are to this very much dynamic environment we jump in. Try not to worry about the things you have no control over -

I've always been a night owl, but in the last week things have gotten really bad and why I must ask? Well at least this week the answer is an easy one. A few days ago I spontaneously started (legally) download a whole slew of music (it was time to get with the times as soon I will be buying an iPod) and I love the fact that I am now it total control of what I listen to and only downloaded the songs that I like. So now I sit here in front of the 'puter with tunes blazing away. I know I need to sleep, but every time a new song comes on, I want/need to listen to it and say to myself I'll stop once this song is over. But then another killer song comes on and the pattern repeats itself until all of a sudden it's much too late and I need to get up for work. Fortunately tomorrow is Friday (one more day or work) and I'll get to sleep in on Saturday. I'm out of here ... shit another good song ... okay I'm going to bed once this song is over ... really I am ... we'll see. PS: I'm having a brain fart. Can anyone tell me the name of the band where there are these two goofy looking Scotish like brothery type guys wearing glasses singing a song that goes something like "If I could walk a 1000 miles". How to kill your friends
CanuckInUSA replied to WeakMindedFool's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
We all make mistakes. I've come close to taking out people on two different occasions on head down freefly jumps which could have been their own potential fatality incidents. I (knock on wood) learned from my mistakes. You'll learn from yours. Try not to worry about the things you have no control over -

The best weather is in the fall, but that won't help you as far as training is concerned. April through early June are reasonable months since the daily summer afternoon thundershower season hasn't kicked in yet. Try not to worry about the things you have no control over -
How to kill your friends
CanuckInUSA replied to WeakMindedFool's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
I didn't like the incident, but I liked how the video was presented. I'm guessing it was a drop of at least 20 feet (probably more) once that skydiver got into the base's burble. Let's be careful out there people. Try not to worry about the things you have no control over -

Well you got some exercise. We'va had snow up here in Alberta this season. But nothing like what you guys got. I don't mind shoveling my two car garage driveway at all (and I'll do it multiple times during a storm if I'm home) since it doesn't take me that long. But I dislike cutting my grass since it takes so much more time. Try not to worry about the things you have no control over

Don't under estimate the intelligence of the animal kingdom. We may be a little smarter than they are, but my cat knows how to communicate with me when she wants something from me and I swear she's saying "thank you" every time I feed her. If she's capable of independent thought and shows signs of intelligence, why is she excluded from a so called heaven? Plus while I know I can't group you into the stereo-typical burble thumper, too many of them say "God made us the way he intended us to be". Yet too many of these stereo-typical burble thumpers reject things like homosexuality and/or the transgendered community as immoral people. Yet they "the burble thumpers" tell everyone that God made us the way he wanted us to be. I see nothing but hypocricy coming from these burble thumpers. If God made people one way, why can't the burble thumpers accept these people for who they are. PS: I'm not a homosexual or transgendered. But I dislike people who judge others who are different from themselves. These two groups are just easy examples of the hypocricy of the stereo-typical burble thumper. If God made us the way he intended for us to be, why can't the burble thumpers stop judging these people. They have enough turmoil in their lives without having society constantly passing judgement on them. Certain morals of Christianity are good morals to follow (though shalt not kill, shall not steal, commit adultury, etc, etc, etc). But Christianity crosses the line the way they judge others who are different from themselves. Then again, I shouldn't just be picking on Christianity. I really should be picking on all man-made religions. Try not to worry about the things you have no control over
-
No now you're stereo-typing. Remember I'm agnostic. I don't claim that there is or isn't a God. All I'm saying is that I reject Christianity since it is a man-made religion. But I will say I like the way you've presented your arguments in this thread. It shows us that you're not the stereo-typical burble thumper. Try not to worry about the things you have no control over

If I'm not mistaken, what you guys have is classic upslope conditions where moist air coming up from Mexico is meeting the cooler air coming down from Canada and since there was/is a low pressure system hanging over the front range (the winds rotate counter-clockwise) and all this cool moisture is stalling over Denver due to the mountains. I guess you guys can blame Canada (like you always do what with CO being SouthPark country). But don't forget to blame Mexico as well. Remember to keep the rubber side down if you do/can take to the roads. Try not to worry about the things you have no control over
