I've asked the chief engineer of the Terrafugia one that. He didn't seem too excited for me to try...

Great list, but that's 6, no? I really like North Coast's Old Rasputin Russian Imperial Stout, and I've always liked Sam Smith's Oatmeal Stout...

There's skydiving in that video? I didn't make it past the 0:30 mark... -
Should I take a skydiving course?
tmccann replied to gchain's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Didn't vote - missing obligatory "Boobies" option. Also, missing yes or no. -
Nice to meet you in person!

I'll bite, Ms. Withers: what is Mrs. Gibbs' profession? -
Thanks for the feedback. I'm probably thinking of the combination of the strong suggestion not to make more than minor course corrections after final and the "no >90 under 1k". I'll think through trying the flat turns progressively lower - I've taken them through my normal pattern (as low as 250 ft to final), but will talk to my local S&TA about bringing my final down lower to practice further. Frankly, the idea of turning that low to the ground scares me, but I take it that that's supposed to be part of the point.

I'm happy to practice the hell out of my braked turns at altitude, but how would I know that I'm ready to demonstrate this skill at 50ft if I can't gauge the altitude lost when I practice? Also, as a practical matter, aren't turns that low forbidden at many DZs? Some canopy coaches will go up with the student on a full altitude hop & pop and provide a level for the student to practice, while giving feedback. The student can practice his/her flat/flare turns and accurately gauge altitude lost. Same for riser vs. toggle turns. Why not let this substitute? A little more expensive, since it requires a coach, but perhaps the program could be devised to check several in-air skills at once?

My sister uses Petplan, and loves it. It's the opposite of what most folks above has discussed - it doesn't cover regular maintenance stuff, just emergencies. In my sister's case, her (very small) puppy ate a bunch of things she shouldn't have - acorns, household items, etc. The acorns alone would have been a couple thousand dollars at least, but was covered, so she just paid her annual deductible. By the time the next one happened, she had already paid the deductible...

Would you support a wingloading BSR?
tmccann replied to billvon's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
I'm a newbie, and voted yes. However, I will note that I would love to see a BSR take into account the asymmetry I've read about regarding smaller canopies. I'm thinking of the SIM recommendation that anything 150 and below be reserved for D license holders. I like my 170 at 1:1 now, but I can see that getting a little old over the next 450 jumps. -
There's an adage about kissing a lot of frogs that comes to mind. You're looking for a rig with a 170 main/reserve, which is one of the most popular items on the classifieds - that and the 190's are very popular among newbies like us. If you're responding to someone who posted more than a day ago, it's probably already sold. I e-mailed a good number of folks about "complete" rigs before buying a used container with a reserve, a separate used main, and a new ADD. Good luck. T

I wish you excellent weather and a real long build time, so you can put a whole lotta jumps on a rented/borrowed 170 before your rig shows up!

Dropzone.com purchase (Caveat Emptor)
tmccann replied to 43_echo's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Yes she is bad mouthing my name for something that isn't true, why wouldn't I change it? If it isn't true, what do you have to worry about? Pulling your info makes you look like you have something to hide. Your reputation isn't something you take out of your trophy room every once and a while, polish up, and show off. You carry it with you every day, and it'll serve you as well as you serve it... Nobody has a dog in this fight but the two of y'all. Everyone is just giving you both the benefit of their outside viewpoint. -
I like the absolute nature of the WNE (Wing-loading Never Exceed) chart on p. 113 of Brian's book "The Parachute and its Pilot". By "like", I don't mean I agree or disagree, just that, as the target newbie likely to put himself and others in danger by getting in over his head, the chart is clear. You start with a 1.0, and add 0.1 for every 100 jumps. So, as a 150# guy, say 20# of equipment, I'm ok at my 1.0 WL on a 170, but a 150 would be a WL of 1.13, so I need to wait until 200 jumps for that. OK, very clear, and I'm perfectly cool with that. Now below 150SF, he also says to subtract two points, so since a 135SF canopy would be a 1.26 for me, I need to wait until the chart says I'm ready for a 1.46, so 500 jumps. Hey, I'm still a long way away from there, but from where I'm standing now, I don't even see the need to go to a 135. More importantly, though, the rule is very clear...

Very touching, Bill. My condolences to you and her other friends and family. It seems like she died doing what she loved, and helping to make a positive impact on the world through shedding light on the darkest of human experiences. She's truly an inspiration.

No comment on the conclusion, but AFFI's altitrack in the corner at the 49 sec mark reads >4k. Student waved off at 30 sec delay. *shrug*

Nice. Enjoy your bling - you've earned it!

So, it's OK to steal from a company because they made the mistake of believing the false information you gave them on an application? It's OK to bitch because you lost paperwork and so don't have the documentation to fight something they do, but if they lose documentation, it's OK to steal from them?
