There are different spellings. I don't know which one he used, I can't read his signature And do those records all say the same thing? As far as I can find, all the accounts agree on all the major points of her life, military accomplishments, trial and death, and were better documented than most anything else during that period, that is why I said she was so amazing. As for being crazy, a person who is a skydiver and base jumper calling me crazy? Funny. But not counting that, sorry I put you with the anti-Christian posters here. I disagree with some of your conclusions but at least you are thinking instead of just spewing, thanks for that. Jan

I don't know what he bases it on but I've got a degree in it and I agree with him. To answer "and all that they learned", we know what they learned because they wrote it down (and drew it). We have that. When it comes to their lives we don't know everything. We don't know for sure what Da Vinci was doing when he was Joan of Arc's age and he didn't even live in a war zone. It's funny how you would think that not agreeing she is by a distance the single most incredible person ever to have lived equates to disrespect. It does not. It's funny how you would think that acknowledging the existence of genuine historical uncertainty instead of assuming the truth of the most favourable possible version equates to disrespect. It does not. (BTW, one thing we do know for sure about Da Vinci is how to spell his name properly. He probably deserves that much respect) I think I spelled copernikus wrong too, the thing you don't seem to get is that everything about Jeanne d'Arc was written down in the trial records and in military records, I don't get why you keep disrespecting the records about her but accept without question records about those guys whos names I cant spell, you people with your degrees seem to pick and choose what you want to believe. you also seem to think it's politically correct to attack a Christian girl and worship a homosexual man. why is that? Whoah no no no. Mark Twain is a persuasive writer and a great advocate for the Maid of Orleans but he's predominantly a storyteller, and in telling a good story he greatly overstates the solidity of what we know about her. We don't know. History is fuzzy. Especially the history of someone as bound up in propaganda - from two sides - as her. When you're going back that far history is about sieving flecks of truth from mounds of bias, it's far more often about what is likely than what is absolute. (And even if every word is true and Joan was a genuine military commander and courtroom genius responsible for every victory claimed on her behalf then it still makes no sense to claim that she was the best person ever in the whole wide world because of it.) Jakee, you at least make reasonable assertions and I agree with most of what you say except your conclusion, Twains story was based on the actual trial transcripts and 12 years research, other scholars say similar things about her and largely agree on the objective facts of her history as told by Twain who said it was his best work, so if she did only 10% of what Twain writes about her and the others agree, she would still be one of the most amazing human beings that ever lived. Certainly more than Joan of Arc. There you go again, changing the subject, the whole reason I brought up J'eanne d'Arc was to make the point that what happened to Turing was not unpresedented - that it has happened to other great people in history, and you use it as an excuse to disrespect a woman, your sexism is showing, better not let your university feminists find out or they'll make you a gelding. The accomplishments of Jeanne d'Arc are objective fact, not myth, shropshire. As for Professor Kallend, he validates all the time his preference for fiction over fact. Jan No history from the middle ages can be considered "objective fact". Really. And what do you base this opinion on? You mean like what we know about Galileo and Copernikus and Newton and Davinchi and all that they learned is propaganda to suit the politics of the time, none of that is objective fact? Funny how you disrespect the most amazing woman in history and worship the most incompetent US president in history, says something about your view of women, I think. Jan

I don't know about the US but I think not many Canadian prosecuters would charge them and less jurys would convict, plus they showed the scum a lot of mercy, they let him live. Jan

What is going to really be cute is the anti gun nuts reaction to the pricture!!! And if you care to look closer, I see only one hand gun where muzzel control was over looked Carry on I see one weapon pointed at a child and the other at an adult. you see nothing of the sort. Jan

And imagine if the powers that be hadn't done the same thing a few centuries earlier to this girl. Turing was surely a genius but he and every other human being pails in comparison to her, be sure to read the whole page. it will blow your mind not just at what she accomplished but that they killed her for accomplishing it. Imagine if they had killed Turing because he accomplished what he did. Jan

Skydiving….Why keep doing it?

Q: Why do you jump from perfectly good airplanes? A: You haven't seen our airplanes. Jan -
Funny how some people think putting a question mark at the end of a strawman statement somehow stops it from being a strawman. So you are a moron? And a weasel as well? Just questions. Those question marks sure come in handy using Jan's logic. Those question marks sure come in handy using Jan's logic. That's right, my logic is asking questions so I can understand yours, asking questions is a good way to learn, that's my logic. You seem to conflate self defense and police shootings and murder if guns are involved, and saying gun violence means violence done by guns like the gun is to blame, so I asked you to clarify. If I had known that question marks offend you, I would have wrote the sentence different. So you are a moron? Sometimes. And a weasel as well? I don't think so, you are the only person in my life who ever used that word to describe me. Just questions. Which I answered, unlike you Professor, and I really do wonder how you treat your students who ask you questions you don't like or don't want to be bothered having to answer, if your as condescending and evasive with them as you are with me. Its really a shame too because I live in a country where hand gun access is limited but rifles are easy to get and I really do want to know what your thinking is. Instead, I get this. Now excuse me, I'm going hunting. Jan

but these all refer to homicides, not murder, right? So wouldn't these numbers also include self defense and police shootings? Wasn't their some famous person who said there are liers, damn liers and statistics? Jan Aren't shootings by police or in self defense themselves indicators of gun violence? (Of course, we'd have to remember the NYPD shoots people for holding a wallet, but in general...) So you think self defense is the same as murder? And you think guns are animate objects? Isn't changing the subject the way you always... oh never mind, try this instead, it actually sheds some light on which of you Yanks are doing what http://www.usnews.com/news/articles/2013/11/14/gun-violence-significantly-increased-by-social-interactions Jan STRAWMAN arguments get you nowhere. Then why do you keep using them all the time? Like now, I did not argue, I asked you a question! Jan "A rhetorical question is a figure of speech in the form of a question that is asked in order to make a point." Stop weaseling. It doesn't work here. Their you go talking to yourself again and FYI, none of my questions are retorical, I would like to know the answers as I am having trouble wrapping my little canuck back woods head around what point you are trying to make. Maybe I am just not smart enough to see your wisdom, is this how you treat your students who don't undersntad you and ask questions? Jan

I think you missed my point... ~ I doubt 100% that she was being insensitive to families with diverse make ups, trust me she's had training regarding those matters - in fact has had training to question when something is 'different'. By YOU using the term 'different' you obviously understand that IT IS...so, different meaning not of or out of the normal - when confronted by someone who is on the look out for things 'not normal', acting offended is either extremely naive or just looking for drama. She was doing her job. BTW...how do YOU know she isn't from 'blended' a family? Rather insensitive to assume someone doing their job as required, makes them somehow ignorant to societies make up. If one is looking for something to be offended about, it can certainly always be found... ~I'm not trying to jump on or insult you 5, but you asked. Simply...she could have either just answered the questions - with the understanding this person was doing both their job AND a service for society, and should be congratulated for the conscientious effort OR made a big issue of being treated 'different' when it's obvious that the situation IS different. You are right about not getting "offended" even if someone is a little over the top, I have neighbors who are Muslim, from Lebanon, the kids are late teens early 20's and the father 40something. They go back to Lebanon, they are ALWAYS profiled and scrutinized in Europe and they are cool because they know they FIT the profile. They think the USA is braindead because the was TSA doesn't profile, they go through USA security and don't get stopped but a 80 year old white lady gets patted down. I respect them for their good humor and wisdom to see that weird stuff happens at airports so don't walk around looking for reasons to get upset. Jan

Based upon my own personal experience & observations during drops tests, I am convinced that a 2-pin reserve container ( all other factors being equal ) will open faster than a 1-pin reserve container will. JerryBaumchen Wonder what the viability of a 2 pin 'vertical' set-up would be, on the modern tapered containers... Isnt that what a racer has? Jan It does...but it's a pop-top, like comparing apples & alligators. why is that? isn't the fundamental function the same? Pull pins, reserve opens. Jan 'Basic' fundamentally perhaps, but that's an extreme oversimplification. That's like saying all parachutes are alike because they 'slow the fall'...there is a lot more to it. When the pilot chute is outside of the pack tray it doesn't have to push the flaps clear of itself prior to inflation...it's faster - period. ...and IIRC - Racer did use a one pin reserve for a while but it created a harder pull than the 2 pin configuration & didn't hold the pot-top as symmetrically as the 2 pin. so I'm wondering why all reserves don't have a pop top if it's so much faster and more sure. Every rig has a 3 ring that is licensed from bill boothe, why not license the pop top from whoever made that? Jan

Longmont City Council will take up skydiving noise

Correct me if im wrong, but isn't the joke that no one jettisons fuel AFTER takeoff to deal with high density altitude, meaning these people are so clueless about basic physics. Jan -
There are people in Canada who say JFK was the worse USA president because he started the nuclear arms race as a campaign tactic, the missile gap, he allowed federal workers to unionize, he forced sientists to quit designing planes to fly into space so he could beat the Russians to the moon using a Jules Vern idea to shoot a bullet at the moon, space capsules. He also got USA into Vietnam. But maybe Lincoln was worse because he killed more Americans than anyone else and made it so the federal government was too much stronger than the states. Jan

She's managing to get paid $10 Million to rub her butt on things. Seems smart to me. That's all she has. No voice. Her butt will be replaced in three years by some other 18 yr old's butt. I was in Linda Ronstadt's time. Miley is a pimple on Linda's ass. A pimple who will bank more than $10 Million by the time her butt is replaced, you have a problem with that? Jan
