I guess I somehow missed the point or question. Oops! Its kind of hard to follow things in here. From my experience visiting a number of federal buildings (and bases) over the last 15 years in DC, most security operations are done by outside security contractors (which is a whole 'nother discussion on "cost savings"). They have guns and do a decent job. At this particular base there is a museum that allows regular civilian entrance. That's publicly available information. Also available publicly, the rest of the base has two levels of security. At this point, I don't even know what we're arguing about. But I hear that's pretty common in SC. My friends warned me about this... Ha!

Sorry if I was being a dick. I guess my point was that nuclear weapons (as of now) have nothing to do with this, and I'm just not sure why you brought it up. If you have a reason, I'm certainly all ears and would be very interested to hear you out.

Sorry. Civilians can absolutely get onto the base (to the museum). My apologies for being unclear. Yes, civilians also work there and can get onto the base into that area (with proper ID). There are civilian workers who are there every day (last I was there). Again, my apologies for being unclear. But there is a TOTAL difference between people who work there and what you're talking about. Please expand on what you are insinuating. Law-abiding DC gun carriers who could/would have done something in this situation. Or are you not saying that? Do you have some other point? Thanks.

Don't worry, I'm catching on pretty quick from your last post. Ha!
-
The museum yes. I already said that. Your Monday morning quarterbacking is AWESOME though. How about any other part of the base, "the last time you were there."
-
Please be clear if you want to insinuate something about nuclear weapons or the security of such weapons in the US, particularly at this base. If not, STFU. Also if not, admit that you're going for some sort of shock value here. If so, please let us know your experience with nuclear weapons and the security of those particular weapons, particularly at this facility. Thanks! edit: wow. nevermind...

Oh come on. This situation has nothing to do with civilians. Let's not interject anything about what citizens would have done in this situation. They have no access to this base, even if they were Rambo or a regular john doe. Let's all admit this is a different situation with circumstances that have nothing to do with civilian life.

Now reports are 6 dead. http://news.yahoo.com/shots-fired-at-washington-navy-yard--u-s--navy-confirms-130407614.html

Like almost ALL federal buildings in the district, all of the contracted security personnel on that base do carry guns. I'm not sure what your point is. Can you clarify? I do agree that in all likelihood there were probably no security people near the shooter(s), that had a gun and could act. That's every federal building in the district honestly though. Question is, do you care (edit: I only ask because most people these days don't seem to give a sh*t about anyone who works for the govt, no matter what capacity they work)?

Thanks for the heads up. I don't have a big preference one way or the other on guns. Its a second-amendment right, so there's that. If people want to own guns, I don't care, as long as you don't shoot me or are a moron with said guns. I have shot a ton with friends, which is super fun, but I've never felt the need to own one. And I've lived in some pretty shady places. Live and let live is my philosophy, I guess. I'm sure its WAY more complicated than that here though.

Um... There are PLENTY of guns at the Navy yard. Its a Navy base. What do you mean "gun-free zone"? Except for the museum, you have to present ID and go through security to enter the base. I understand that also, for many buildings there, there is another level of security where you have to swipe your govt ID card to gain access, which is common in many govt buildings. Out of curiosity, are you trying to start a gun rant? I'm new to SC and find it a little hard to recognize sometimes. Not that a gun rant is right or wrong...

My understanding, which could easily be wrong, is that zoos were first set up to make money. They showcased exotic animals (and sometimes humans) from far-off places, and charged an admission fee. It wasn't until very recently in human history that they were free (in only some places) and meant to 'educate.' Now I'm not saying that you're wrong or anything (or right, for that matter), but for the most part, I believe zoos, throughout the world, are still meant to make money. My guess is, that only in the US are people debating the use of zoos as a political chess piece. You have to admit though that's pretty funny. What a world...

Yeah. Ft McNair was locked down for a bit as well. I guess as a precaution. Hope those injured are able to fully recover. edit: for those that don't know, ft mcnair is right near the navy yard

Hearing there were at least 2 shooters. Now down. Not sure if that means they are in custody or were taken out. Don't know what proper LEO terms mean. Secure facility though. So you would think at least one, maybe 2 levels of security. Also rumors of one security officer down and one DC metro LEO down. Heard multiple guns. ATF and FBI on scene. Also heard the cafeteria was targeted. (High volume of people) But that is hearsay at this point.
-
Now hearing at least 10 wounded. Hoping for minimal casualties... Also, not that I care, but for those who love to debate guns, hearing a shotgun was involved.
-
Why do you think zoos exist? How familiar are you with the history of zoos?

Navy confirms there's an active shooter on the Navy Yard in DC. At least one officer shot. Check the news for more.

Renouncing US citizenship..... for tax purposes. Would you?
dorkitup replied to dorkitup's topic in Speakers Corner
It seems some US citizens renounce their citizenship...for tax purposes. I can't say I blame some of them. Like the guy in the article who the IRS forces to share info on accounts that he holds jointly with his Canadian wife. Not the IRS's business in my opinion. Also from the article, the whole "name and shame" thing is an asshole thing for the IRS to do. What are your thoughts? http://finance.yahoo.com/news/tax-time-pushes-americans-hike-204320491.html -
Take a look at this video: http://www.thedailyshow.com/watch/mon-september-26-2011/indecision-2012---the-great-right-hope---the-gop-finds-another-ideal-candidate Stewart has the majority of republicans pegged. Funny as hell. FYI - The soldier that Stewart refers to as "captain creatine" is a gay soldier currently serving. He had asked the republican candidates in the last debate what they would do about don't ask don't tell if elected. I can't say I'm impressed with democrats either. Many policies I don't agree with. I have voted for both parties in the past. But the republican party is a complete mess right now. Politics is funny! And totally sad...

To Gary aka KKrew: Since you've stolen from skydivers, I will share the ancient wisdom of the steps to restore your reputation in the skydiving world: 1 - Go take a vacation in south africa for a while 2 - Get job at sunpath 3 - Test new reserve container and get new TSO on their dime. 4 - When sunpath gets pissed, quit and open gear manufacturing shop with your shiny new TSO'd rig. 5 - Sell rigs and teach rigging. Follow these steps and you will soon be loved again.
