California man gets eight years for stealing cheese
DJL replied to dreamdancer's topic in Speakers Corner
I agree, still it must be at the discretion of the court. There's no reason for society to have to deal with a person in their midst who is a habitual criminal. The next instance could possibly result in a conflict that could leave someone injured or dead. So, with that thought is 7 years really enough. If you're talking about a 20 year old who has been stealing since he was a kid and finally the judge decides that he needs to be put away for a longer time then that 27-year-old getting out of jail may emerge as a more mature individual. If we're talking about a 37-year-old then we might want to sent him to the shrinks this time around. "I encourage all awesome dangerous behavior." - Jeffro Fincher -

Mandatory sentences take discretion away from judges and ignore the tenets of our legal system that the penalty must fit the crime and that the punishment cannot be cruel and unusual. This is why we have judges, there must be a human involved to oversee the proceedings and use their esteemed discretion. Any counter argument saying that judges are subject to corruption or inconsistency must specifically address those issues instead of creating a system that allows them to continue unchecked. The alternative to this is to allow stiffer penalties for repeat offenders or allow the judge further discretion in the penalty. If a city/state/nation has a system that can recognize some type of psychological issue with this person then that can be applied. If not then the only choice may be to put him back in the clink. Architecture project involving skydiving
DJL replied to Mark24688m's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
I actually do understand what you're trying to do. But I do think you should look at your motivations. Remember that you're starting with a site that has people, geography, climate, history and scale. In this setting, what is your antagonist? When an architect doesn't think about what is motivating them then we end up with glassy ultra-corporate buildings in historical towns or a neighborhood full of repetitive Tudor houses. You don't have to leave skydiving out, in the same sense that you shouldn't have a structure that looks literally like the sequence of a landing you also shouldn't ignore what it is about this landing that excites you. This is called being self aware. What you're doing here is taking a personal experience and applying it to this project; this will be part of your presentation that you show to relate you and your life to what you're doing. Take this landing sequence photo as block 1 and then create/build/draw something that represents it. Next, now that you've explained what it is that motivates you look for something relevant to the site, people, geography, climate, history, and scale that mimics this form or equally excites your imagination. If you've done your research you know that the Indian Ocean is a very, very, violent place. it shouldn't be hard to find an antagonist there. Also, why this project and what purpose does this structure serve? Again, back to rule #Zero that the point of any structure is to house people. So here you have and extremely violent setting and you need to house people in it. So, how do you meet violence and in the same breath make people comfortable. Hmmm, funny that your prof wants ships or boats, the very things that given mankind a feeling of comfort against the power of the sea. "I encourage all awesome dangerous behavior." - Jeffro Fincher -
Brewdog is damn fine beer. We're having a Brewfest here in Brattleboro http://www.brattleborobrewfest.com/ that Brewdog is coming to. I tried a few of their beers that were aged in whiskey barrels. http://www.brewdog.com/paradox.php "I encourage all awesome dangerous behavior." - Jeffro Fincher

loose change? is that a trick question? I'm asking about the specific points that this video makes. What are they and what do you agree with? For example do you agree that the language they were using (saying they decided to pull the building) is proof that there were explosives, or that the Mayor didn't enter the building to utilize the emergency facility for...some reason. What's that reason? "I encourage all awesome dangerous behavior." - Jeffro Fincher

How sure are you that they don't believe, and how can you be sure they are simply not protecting their jobs by conforming to popular belief. i met an engineer only a month ago that was sure that truthers were kidding themselves, he took the time to study what they were saying and has been and active truth activist ever since. We don't point the finger anymore, we simply state the facts, the simple irrefutable facts. How sure are you that they are aware of the freefall acceleration of building 7? Most people don't know building 7 fell because it was not really reported after that day. If they believe free fall acceleration is possible for a steel framed building by fire alone, they need to re asses their understanding of basic physics. No one, I repeat, No one has explained how this anomaly is possible, they have not tried and will not because it is physically impossible. ANSWER THE QUESTION! I said that I would even say that 50% of the people were secretly on your side. Again the question is: What would you say if an equally large group of engineers and architects signed a petition and actually believed what they were signing? So, is your answer that you'd entirely dismiss it just because it wasn't your own point of view? Yet you say that a group that does support your point of view is absolute proof. Do you see where I'm going? Remember, I'm giving you 50%. How can you say that one equally large group of equally intelligent and educated people is so easily dismissed? At best it means that the data is useless. "I encourage all awesome dangerous behavior." - Jeffro Fincher

Ok...listen. You're trying way too hard to tie skydiving into what you're doing. Not gonna quash your creative juices but think about your motivations. Tits have more to do with ships than skydiving does. That's correct...tits. Velvet, I look forward to using those phrases on the Architect I wake up with every morning along with the ones I work with daily. Most of them know enough art school architects to get the punchline. I don't see anything wrong with a light tasting session beer. I'm a craft brew drinker because I like the taste of real beer, not because I poo-poo the corn and rice beers. ..........Ok, I admit it, I poo-poo corn and rice beers. OH...and just to let everyone know what I did today (and rub it in your faces) :http://www.hereforthebeer.com/kate-the-great-day-portsmouth-brewery-new-hampshire/ Tim will be posting the video we took today shortly but that's from last year. Those of us in FL have long believed that CA creates the trends that spread across the nation. Could it be that the good people of CA have just become fed up to their eyeballs the LGBT weirdos within their midst? You're obviously never seen an episode of COPS. The country would be better off if FL snapped off and sank into the ocean. "I encourage all awesome dangerous behavior." - Jeffro Fincher -

The last video of her life is her climbing into the water with the animal that killed her. I'm not an instructor but I've shot a ton of AFF and Tandem Vid and will give credit to anyone willing to be in the same air as any of us when we started off. Are you just playing the devil's advocate? That's not a very good example. I don't think anyone would say that an organized...we'll just say transporter whether it be a taxi company or and a country's military branch is out of line by asking people to not drink while in their vehicles. Is your four-way team passing a ceremonial bottle of champagne or beer around or are they chugging brews in the peas? It's really an matter of the image you're conjuring. I only saw what looked like no more than the athletes enjoying a beer on the ice, no crushed cans against the forehead. People have a cultural attitude that drinking alcohol in any place other than inside their home or in a bar/restaurant (designated location) is the same as a homeless sod sucking on a bottle of Ripple in a brown paper bag. Now, we know that these were celebratory brews, not my cellaring bottles of St. Bernadus. Also, these athletes know the scrutiny they're under and know it's pretty stupid. I think that in the long run that nobody will care about this any more than they cared about Shaun White and his coach using swear words. Sort of. However, in order to enjoy the thrill of skydiving you have to skydive, you don't have to do low pulls or skydive in crazy wind conditions. In order to be a Killer Whale trainer you don't have to get in the tank with a Killer Whale with a history of drowning people and had been acting aggressively towards the other 9 ton creatures in the tank. I can't find the source right now but I believe reading that trainers had previously been barred from entering the tank with this Orca. I difference I recognize is that this was the head trainer and is presumably capable of making the call on when it is or is not OK to go in there. In this case she was wrong. Good for them, they were having celebratory beverages in a responsible manner. I didn't see pictures of anyone shotgunning, keg standing, or vomiting on the ice - just drinking like civilized humans. There isn't anything morally wrong with responsible drinking. "I encourage all awesome dangerous behavior." - Jeffro Fincher

A quick query for you since you put a lot of credence on this list of Architects and Engineers. My old company consisted of over 100 Engineers in the construction industry. My girlfriend's company consisted of over 100 Architects. Of that group 100% do not believe that there were explosives in any of the towers. To be conservative, let's say that some of those people secretly believe that there were explosives (we'll say 50% to be fair). So, just knowing how many more companies are out there we could say that there are at least 1000 who don't think there were explosives. What would be your reaction if there was an equally large list of Architects and Engineers who understand and state that airplanes were the only reason for the structural failure of all of the buildings? So...she's in the water with the Orca that had already killed trainers in the past, the result of which was a policy that forbade trainers from getting in the water with that Orca. "I encourage all awesome dangerous behavior." - Jeffro Fincher
