I thought power failure + brake failure, but your explanation is even simpler if the brake is located between motor and transmission. As mentioned above, there are multiple redundant braking systems. When a Normal Stop is activated from the control panel, the lift will be slowed and stopped using regenerative braking through the electric motor and the service brake located on the highspeed shaft between the gearbox and electric motor. When an Emergency Stop is activated all power is cut to the motor and the emergency brake or bull-wheel brake is activated. In the case of a rollback, some lifts utilize a ratchet like system to prevent the bull-wheel from spinning backwards while newer installations utilize sensors which activate one or more bull-wheel brakes. All braking systems are fail-safe in that a loss of power or hydraulic pressure will activate the brake. Older chairlifts, for example 1960's-era Riblet Tramway Company lifts, have a hydraulic release emergency brake with pressure maintained by a hydraulic solenoid. If the emergency brake/stop button is depressed by any control panel, the lift cannot be restarted until the hydraulic brake is hand-pumped to proper operating pressure. Source: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chairlift#Braking Or, one busy day, the brake keeps malfunctioning, locking things up. The owner/maintenance guy jams it open and makes a mental note to fix that as soon as he can get around to it.

You realize that right here in the US we "marched people into the gas chamber" between 1924 and 1999, right? Nazi Germany was hardly unique in that respect. Holocaust victims were convicted murderers?

But then there's "past practices." We're discussing this like it's a one off for one employee, but try explaining that to the other employees when they want theirs. And they will. -

No, I think he means how on earth do you guys keep fucking up the actual act of killing someone? How is it that 60 years ago we still used a wooden platform and a rope and it was quicker, cleaner, more humane and more reliable than the chemical clusterfuck the US has found itself with? Hell, say what you like about the Soviet Union but it seems like a bullet in the head would be a better way of doing things in almost every respect. Except the blood would offend the spectators who turned up to watch a human being die, which is clearly more of a consideration than gown the chosen method affects the subject of the sentence. They're actually speeding up executions, or at least trying to, to get them all killed before the sell by date on the drugs they use runs out. Around here we have at least one death a day of someone with a needle in their arm but The State needs a machine with three feeds and blinking lights and still screws it up more often than not. If we really need the death penalty, and we really want to be humane about it (two big ifs but that's not a discussion I'm interested in, it never gets resolved) then give them a dose and a half of fentynal. Total cost less than a hundred dollars and the condemned dies with a very large smile on their face. Most people who get this far in the prison system already have an extensive history of drug use so we could probably save another fifty dollars by having them inject themselves. We'd probably see far fewer screwups, too.

The Soviet system was serious punishment. They'd tell the condemned what was going to happen but not when. Then, like their victim, they've lost control of their life. Now every time they hear a footstep or doors clanging open or being closed they know that this might be it, this might be the time they're led to the shower and shot in the back of the head. Or not. Support it or not, it had a genius to it.

Nope, he just becomes an undocumented alien from Hades and has to mow lawns, shovel snow or pick fruit. Or kill someone and take their stuff.

But have you seen his photo? It sounds pretty cut and dry until then. I do have a big question about the death penalty though. No, I'm not talking for or against, please put those thoughts aside. This has nothing to do with that. But, if, and I'm just saying if, bear with me, we're going to have a death penalty then why is it such a pain in the ass to carry out? There are people in the CIA that can pat you on the back as they walk by and the next thing you know you're dead. People die every day, and sometimes from really trivial stuff. When I was at the phone company one of our big concerns was not going into a manhole then suddenly being dead. Techs at NASA were in a fuel tank that was filled with nitrogen and probably didn't even know they were dying. Half our economy is about trying to keep some people alive. And yet you'd think every execution was a Moon shot.

In Athens Oh and the surrounding area the Athens School District if known for being very good and the surrounding ones for being very bad. Athens is a University town in the middle of Appalachia and this is one of the ways it shows. A lot of people move here wanting to live outside the city but put their kids in Athens schools. Along with paying extra they have to provide all transportation. And a lot of time both parents work. They probably wouldn't be able to afford the extra cost otherwise. I don't see how they do it. -
Something I've noticed whenever someone is trying to describe new aviation things as safe is that they talk about one. Things like "This self flying car is absolutely safe because ..." but they skip over the situation with hundreds or more at the same time on the same route. A guy on the radio was defending his flying his new drone over the city's parade as perfectly safe so he shouldn't have gotten a citation and fine for it, but they never mentioned what would happen when a couple of dozen others get one for Christmas and want to join in.

I wonder, under Romanian law, do you actually have to drive the stake in before declaring him dead? "Wait one minute! This is my home. My people cleared the land. We tortured innocent peasants for it. We even murdered for it. By Romanian law, that makes it ours." Nobody respects tradition anymore. Oh, remember when they dug the Ceaușescus back up to make sure they were dead? -

My first thought was "wouldn't the fact that he was standing there prove he was alive?" Then I saw his picture. -
I disagree. IMO it is not 'who make their living producing guns.' 'Find out which politicians represent constituents who salivate whenever they see a gun.' IMO it has nothing to do with protecting oneself; how many gun owners ( %-age wise ) have ever used a gun to actually protect themselves? It is an emotional thingy; they get all horny everytime they see a gun. I'm Mech Engr & a gun fascinates me from the construction & function of it. But, that is about it. Jerry Baumchen You don't think an exec from a place that makes guns has as much influence over their politicians than they guy who buys them? Either way, so far the gun makers have been ignored. That can't help. And the fact that they can't be sued can't help either. I can't remember ever seeing that making the headlines.

When I started jumping the Spanish Fly and Green Star (not Green Star's fault. I always point that out) fatalities had just happened and when the beer light came on we'd talk a lot about how to survive a bounce. And we were only half joking. When I watched him go through a couple of hundred feet with his hand on his chest strap but his blast handle back behind his ear I had that eerie feeling of looking at someone who was alive but dead. Then and during the bounce I mentally saw all of that crap go out the window. After that we spent the time we used to talk about surviving a bounce going over our gear and emergency procedures. Reality had just landed, at 120mph.

(Sarcasm) Well, according to some the knife and crossbow industries will go through the roof. (Not sarcasm) Can't stand Mother Jones. (Serious Reply) Yeah, we'll see a loss in a sector for a specific product but we're not exactly held hostage over the issue. Great economy, great sales elsewhere and AR makers have already flooded the market so it's not worth as much anymore. They should be happy for a spike in sales surrounding any threat/restriction. My point is that there may be more to the delays and reluctance to do anything about gun violence than just the standard nobody getting around to it or the NRA. If people want to do something about there being so many guns it's important to know why there are so many. As usual, money. Find out which politicians represent constituents who make their living producing guns and confront them about it.

I watched a man who was basically my mentor bounce when I had about 50 jumps and was still a novice. The spot was "straight up" so he was just a few hundred feet from us. We were a very small DZ that only jumped on Sundays but we got everyone together to jump the next Saturday which was as soon as possible or us. We needed to get back up on the horse. That next jump helped a lot. Not as much as I'd hoped, but a lot. Just keep skydiving. That's about all you can do.

Guns seem to be one of the few remaining successful industries in the US. What would the hit to Massachusetts be if we did ban AR-15? And the list goes on, and usually not to places you'd expect. Take a look at these articles then see if the lack of action against guns seems like a mystery. https://www.motherjones.com/politics/2016/06/fully-loaded-ten-biggest-gun-manufacturers-america/ https://www.motherjones.com/politics/2016/06/do-you-own-part-of-a-gun-company/ edit: I forgot to do the thing to make those urls so I tried doing it now. I hope it works.

Damn, and he just did the latest Hitchhikers Guide to the Gallery Well in early March he was saying he know what happened before the Big Bang. https://mashable.com/2018/03/05/stephen-hawking-video-before-big-bang/#0ZuEb9IP3aqP Maybe I'm just a dumb ordinary person, but WTF? That was one big fat polysyllabic nullity. Well, he was smart enough to stick with subjects that people weren't going to show up with a video and prove him wrong.

Some places put the camera on the student's hand and get a mix of good and bad video. It's argued that it's no less safe than a TI with a hand cam and may even be an improvement over a possible entanglement around the TI's arm which makes him/her unable to deploy the reserve. As far as it being allowed the USPA is very aware of it. Edit: I personally would be happy to have the student wearing the handcam rather than me so I can focus on flying and safety. Do they still charge tandems for video ? - ie. you can wear a camera but your still paying us for the privilege. You can wear it and get crappy video or let us wear it and get a much better quality result. I can go into McDonalds and have a burger but bring my own bun. It doesnt stop them charging me full price for the burger (without the bun) that they sell me. Video is a service that the DZ offer. Plus this wasn't the usual tandem one off. This was his third jump which makes it likely that he wants to become an actual skydiver, but he seemed to concentrate on the camera during the entire jump.

The Room takes "bad" to a whole new level - I love it. I was so excited when I heard Seth Rogen was a fan and wanted to do a movie about it. I showed The Room to my boyfriend a few months ago and when we get a bit of time we are very much looking forward to watching The Disaster Artist together. Franco is incredible at imitating Wiseau and from several side-by-side YouTube videos the attention to detail is amazing. I. Can't. Wait!!!!

So a NATO Ally has been Attacked by Russia with Banned Weapons.
Bob_Church replied to Phil1111's topic in Speakers Corner
You know what, I think it's well understood that if you're a double agent against Russia you can assume that someday you'll be walking down the street and feel a slight prick somewhere on your body. They're like the evil counterparts of the jewish forces that hunted down Nazis after the war and even some terrorist attacks.
