Just For Turtle--Have You Ever Gotten A Medal?

Lots of good answers here but the key point everyone has missed is that more or less, round, non-steerable parachutes will all drift with the wind at the same speed, direction and decent rate. Yes there will be some differences because of weight but generally they're all wind dummies. If they had steerable canopies it would be a total goat fuck with lots of injuries. 505 Parachute Infantry Regiment, 82d Airborne Division 1986-1990 Card carrying member of the Nanny State Liberation Front

Oh believe me I understand where you're coming from, I use to do tandems for the same reason...but finally decided that the money I was making 'part-time' wasn't worth the commitment it required from me...and my circumstance didn't lend to doing it full-time...also that the guys doing it full-time were probably better than me, and didn't need some hack like me skimming what money was available. Oh yeah, I've thought about that too. I'm sure the guys who are working full time at it wouldn't appreciate a freelancer coming in and "taking their business". Ah well, I'm sure I'll have a better perspective once becoming a TI is more of a reality for me. Interesting thread though! Card carrying member of the Nanny State Liberation Front

Hours are long, the money is not great and you always have the chance to getting busted up and losing what income you were pulling in...that being said, there are a whole lotta guys out there making a go of it because thankfully...money isn't their primary motivation. Just being honest and practical. If I was just going to jump for fun, I'd stick with wingsuiting and that would be that. But tandem jumping seems more like a business to me. And like I said, It would be a way to keep the cost of the sport down. I'm not thinking of it being a full time job. Card carrying member of the Nanny State Liberation Front

I'm thinking a bit further down the road than I should as I won't be jumping again for a couple years. But I figured if I had a tandem rating, it would help me pay for my fun jumps. However tandem rigs appear to cost well over 10K so it's definitely a business investment. Now I really have no idea what tandem masters make per jump but I would think it would depend on who owns the gear being jumped. I know if I dished out money for a new tandem rig, I'd want the bulk of that $200 charged to students to pay for my investment. However it sounds like the money I was thinking of is no where near what folks make. I'm not sure what my point is. I'm just sayin'. Card carrying member of the Nanny State Liberation Front

Hell yeah... Sons is awesome. But I'm thinking more along the lines of maybe a dramatic/comedy like Weeds. The story of a semi-dysfunctional skydiving team and their merry band of adrenaline junky friends as they train for this meet and the other meet and so on and so forth... Coming up with novel ways to make money to pay for their jumps, find sponsors, whatever. And put it on Showtime so it can include adult language and situations. THAT would rock. I'm thankful the semester is almost over which means I'm one semester closer to graduating, finding a decent job and skydiving again!! It's been 20 years since I jumped regularly. I walk around everywhere with my eyes fixed on the skies.... and looking at towers and buildings thinking, "hey that's a base jump!" I can't wait to start jumping again. I've been away too long. Happy Thanksgiving to all here.

So glad I left and moved to Texas. Funny how in San Francisco, it's OK to give junkies free syringes to shoot up with, but giving toys to children with their McDonald's happy meals would just give the wrong message. Card carrying member of the Nanny State Liberation Front

The same can be said for electric cars and such. But it's only a matter of time and advancing technology before water cracking can be done cheaply and easily. At that point we'll have the cleanest and most plentiful fuel source in the universe... make it from water, and the exhaust is water. It's really a no-brainer. Ya know, I'd been wanting to add one of those to my list for years. Then V and I are in Thailand jumping the tailgate Hercs, and we made a couple of demo loads out of the turbine DC-3. Very cool, but the Hercs were a hard act to follow. -
OK, I remember the first pie in the face usually happens at 1000 jumps. But these days I'm seeing people getting pied at 100. I've got over 500 and never saw a pie. What's up with that? Card carrying member of the Nanny State Liberation Front
