Edited it for you! Edited it for you! There. Edited it for all y'all. Top, is the poor guy gonna bleed all over his rig or not?

"Low-timers don't need to get distracted by all the fancy gadgets yet." I am a low-timer.

#1- your eyes #2- a nice used analog wrist mount that you can get for $50 on the internet. Yep. Analogs don't need batteries, are much less fragile, & can be seen @a glance regardless of angle or lighting. I say this even though I really like electronics.

Canopy Collision video (thankfully non fatal)
PiLFy replied to Fallcoholic's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Yeah, vids like that are very good to teach us newer guys N gals. It's a shame when they get pulled down. I don't think anyone is bashing the guy. He made mistakes. I've no doubt they were addressed by his instructors. Happily, he didn't get seriously hurt or killed learning them. -
Canopy Collision video (thankfully non fatal)
PiLFy replied to Fallcoholic's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
It sure looks like a planned four-way exit. He never bothers to try & dock w/them, though (?). What really freaks me out is he never looks up at the canopy after the collision (?!). Let alone doing a full controllability check. I think he was afraid to cut away. My Newbie self sees a number of mistakes made. -
I'm so not ready to try something like that. It's not even funny... But, it looked like fun.
-
WOW . That is scary_fast.

"The first thing my coach did was teach me 4 different EPs for various malfunction scenarios when jumping with a camera." & those would be what???

Current delivery time for Mirage...
PiLFy replied to Nealeod's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
"Anyone know what the current delivery time for Mirage is?" Sure, it's about 3-4 times as fast as UPT. -
That's wonderful, Andrew! Now, get yer Butt back up front. We want to jump ...

"...after having all 4 wisdom teeth removed?" Are there Beer Rules for Dry Socket???
-
OK, Thanks.

Agreed, that goes without saying. DZO's own the house, though. They set the house rules.
-
PM on the way. Kids can play w/their other toys anywhere. They can only play w/their GoPros at the DZO's house, in plain view. DZOs set the house rules. I could swear I read somewhere that the FAA shut down a DZ because they had reached a certain number of fatalities within a certain time frame. If three Newbs bounced wearing cameras at "X" DZ. Would that not bring the FAA down on them?
-
Hi, I see your points, & your much higher experience in the sport. You're making the Sex Ed argument that kids have this neat new toy. They're going to play w/them... BUT, they have to have at least tacit approval from the DZO to jump a camera @

Meh...Wear extra cloths & have at it. Winter jumping is FUN .

Broken ankle on a bad landing. Need reading materials in down time.

That's good, Jim. His wife is already pissed. Ya trying to get 'im divorced, too? -
Maybe I didn't express myself clearly. That's what I said. The wind was coming from the video shooter's right. That wind, I'm surmising, caused eddies to come off of the treeline in front of the vid shooter. Those eddies then continued down that treeline, twirling out more as they went. I don't see how the trees far away to the right could have thrown any junk.
-
It's Skydive Hawaii @Dillingham field, right? I can't tell which way she was headed. That runway is really long. It looks wide open. If we still had the video (ahem)? We could possibly judge where they were on the field.

I feel very bad the gal got hurt, too. We can't change that. We can use the bad experience to help others not get hurt, though. If there were anguished screams/suffering of the injured? I could see your point more. Just my $0.02 on that. The trees off to the right (where the wind was coming from) are pretty far away (looked considerably more than 10X their height). Other jumpers landing at about the same distance from those trees seemed unaffected by the wind. She was close to the treeline she had just cleared to turn onto final. On the vid, you can hear the gust & see the effects on her canopy. A clean gust of wind wouldn't do that to a canopy, right? So, I'm working on the idea that (dunno the correct term) eddies of turbulence came off that treeline, & went up the side of it. Like I said. It would be nice for you more-experienced guys to be able to dissect that vid, & teach us just what the H*ll did happen.
-
??? Did you see the vid? I watched it a few times before someone deprived us of its teaching value. The pic only shows us someone got hurt. The vid showed turbulence coming from a new (for me) threat angle: sideways off a row of trees. At least, I think that's what happened to her. Further analysis by more experienced eyes would yield a valuable lesson or three from this vid. Otherwise, others may also get hurt for want of its teachings... Not Cool.
-
& now a few more newer jumpers may make the same mistake... Pulling vids like that isn't giving back to the sport.
-
Damnit. Someone just removed the video from Youtube. How are others supposed to learn from this if it's removed??? I saw the weather you posted about. I could actually hear the wind gust in the guy's video mic. THEN, her canopy collapses a second later. I'm just trying to learn where the line is, so I don't go anywhere near it...
-
OK, that just freaked me out. I won't jump when it's gusting, but have jumped in higher winds than you say. Do you happen to know how high they were gusting? You can hear the wind gust that collapsed her canopy. Edit to add: Or, was it more the low rainclouds bringing funky thermals as Skyper just said?
