wow. you guys are pretty quick to pass judgement on someone because of their opinion. if i had my child or mom or husband killed by a drunk driver, there's no way i'd buy beer either because i think i'd have a slight aversion to alcohol based on my experience. shame on you guys for slamming him and calling him prejudiced without knowing his reasons. as far as crack being illegal and alcohol not...legality doesn't make it any less harmful. blues, arlo

i think it would be more to help someone who has been disabled in a skydiving accident - a way to help out a fellow skydiver. the reason i'm asking is because our friend's mom may want donations to go to a charity for disabled skydivers. thta's all i really know. her son died on july 4th at crosskeys and the memorial service/ash dive is being held on the 23rd. i think she's looking for a way to "in lieu of flowers..." but i'm not 100% sure. i'm just throwing the feelers out now so i have some info. sorry it's clear as mud.

alright, rickster and i were talking about this thread today (he doesn't frequent the internet that much). he said he was swooping the shit outta some Stingray 145 but that was back in 1984. he also added that this dude named joey d who ran the pro shop at the ranch was ripping it up back then too. he said he remembered joey swooping like a madman and looking at it going "i wanna do THAT." god bless these little nuggets. he had no idea that his name was still "out there" or that anyone really remembered. it's pretty cool to see his reaction to this. of course, chris hayes has now started a trend of "kissing the ring" of the godfather.

hey guys- is anyone aware of a charity specifically set up for disabled skydivers? this is a serious question otherwise i'd be asking for ticket donations in MY name. ;) but any help would be greatly appreciated. i am aware of the group "pieces of eight" so i'll research that a bit as well. specifics would be appreciated. thanks in advance! arlo

good idea. thanks. this is a request from our friend ron's parents (he died in x-keys on the 4th) so i think they're interested in donations being made to something like that. i'm trying to find what's out there and reputable asap. thanks... a

Wednesday, July 13, 2005; Posted: 3:49 a.m. EDT (07:49 GMT) WASHINGTON (Reuters) -- The compound that makes curry yellow could help fight skin cancer, U.S. researchers reported Monday. They said curcumin, found in the spice turmeric, interferes with melanoma cells. Tests in laboratory dishes show that curcumin made melanoma skin cancer cells more likely to self-destruct in a process known as apoptosis. The same team has found that curcumin helped stop the spread of breast cancer tumor cells to the lungs of mice. Bharat Aggarwal of the Department of Experimental Therapeutics at the University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston and colleagues treated three batches of melanoma cells, known as cell lines, with curcumin at different doses and for varying times. The curcumin suppressed two proteins that tumor cells use to keep themselves immortal, the researchers write in next month's issue of the journal Cancer. "Based on our studies, we conclude the curcumin is a potent suppressor of cell viability and inducer of apoptosis in melanoma cell lines," Aggarwal's team wrote. "Future investigation to determine the effects of curcumin in animal models of melanoma and clinical trials are planned." Earlier research has shown that curcumin, which acts as an antioxidant, can help prevent tumors from forming in the laboratory. Aggarwal said people who eat plenty of turmeric have lower rates of some cancers, although the spice itself has not been shown to reduce cancer risk in people.

i have seen several AFF-Is (and i use that term loosely) who couldn't fly their asses our of a paper sack bring students in the tunnel (SVO) and damn near take them out (by burbling, colliding, etc). i even asked one from the maryland area if he thought he was a good instructor in the tunnel and he said "absolutely!" f-ing ridiculous. for those AFF-Is that frequent the tunnel and are good tunnel flyers, that's great! you get to build a rapiore with the student both on and off the dz (so to speak). but if someone tries to tell me any AFF-I would be best at teaching in the tunnel i'll call bullshit right away. i saw a lot of that while at SVO...a few years worth and the ones i saw that sucked might have been the world's best AFF-Is (which i HIGHLY doubt) but they put their students closer to harms way in the tunnel than the students did for themselves. the tunnel instructors can (and do) teach most people basic body flight and do a damn good job of it. they're not trying to teach them to be world champs...they're teaching the students how to fly stable and do BASIC moves. for instructors keeping students in the tunnel for more than 1 minute at a time: do you find that this decreases their altitude awareness because their internal clock (that's now being created) fakes them into expecting longer freefall times due to these extended "freefall" times in the tunnel? i've talked to alot of guys that started skydiving in conjunction with tunnel flying and several thought they had more time than they actually did during the skydives. just curious if you consider this to be a potential issue. blues, arlo

hey guys, if anyone wants to extend their condolences to the family, i would highly recommend doing so. you could send a card to the address in the previous post. i met ron's family yesterday (mom, dad, younger sis, older bro) and they can use all the support we can give them. they are awesome, awesome people...as is annette. it really touched them and meant alot to them to see the love and friendship that is shared within the skydiving community. thanks...

i just received this PM: "My condolences on Sunday's tragic deaths. I'm a reporter with The Star-Ledger and I've been assigned to write a story about her and Ron. I understand you and she were very close. Could I trouble you for an interview? I'd be interested in learning what kind of person she was, what inspired her, what her personality was like, what hobbies and interests she had beyond skydiving, etc. My phone number is 973-392-4230 or you can send me a number where I might reach you. My e-mail is jmalinconico@starledger.com. I'm writing this story for tomorrow's paper, so please respond as soon as possible. Thanks, Joe Malinconico " everyone, please be aware this is going on and choose your wording carefully. what's so lovely about this media request is that i only met sara once. i knew ron from zhills.... sorry for the "interruption" of the thread.. arlo
