OK, thanks. I was referencing other vids I've seen, where pilot chute is tossed, and canopy inflates while the two instructors watch it inflate, and they both watch him disappear.....In my opinion, this student was not going to cut-away ( anytime soon ). Having the reserve out gives him something over his head, but the baglock could have drifted to the rear at the same time, maybe causing a wrap. Would you have done anything different ? Life is short ... jump often.

Seems like the only option, seeing as how the main side instructor tracked off before the student's canopy inflated, and the student was not going to cut-away by himself ( which he could have of course, but.............) Life is short ... jump often.

do you have such hard openings only on Safire or did you have it also on other canopies? QuoteI don't think I ever had a hard opening on my Safire. I had a number of them on my Triathlon, and some other canopies, but those were all forward head movement ( chin hits chest ). My only head backwards hard opening was BASE jumping slider down. I was jumping slightly head low, looking at the ground ( on purpose ). I went a little long ( 3.5 - 4 secs. ) The canopy drag at deployment flipped me onto my back, then the canopy inflated. My head went back very hard, it sucked. All of that happened in about 1 second of course. I'm assuming, if you are looking up, to watch your ( skydive ) canopy inflate, this same thing could happen during a hard opening. Life is short ... jump often.

Um....welcome to skydiving....wait until you get a hard opening while you are looking up at you canopy, and the " back " of you head touches your backbone. That will wake you up ( I don't look at my canopy until it is inflated, anymore )....... . Life is short ... jump often.

Some non-jumper will buy them of course......then, thinking a parachute is a parachute, will take them out for their last jump off a bridge, or a building..... Life is short ... jump often.

Consider stowing these long risers in your pack tray..... Worst case, face to face with another canopy when you have line twist.....reach above twist, if possible, grab steering lines, and pull to turn. Life is short ... jump often.
