Ground to Aircraft handheld radios?
jumpsalot-2 replied to tkhayes's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Keeping in mind how far away a fight path may be. I was calling out to the plane for high winds in the landing area once. I could not reach them, but the airport heard me and sent the message out to them. Power supply and line of sight all matter. I was on a line voltage radio and still could not reach them. A good antenna is probably also an issue. Life is short ... jump often. -

This is a set up I have seen and used. Then under canopy, if you have a red strobe in front of you, you are flying face to face with another jumper. If you see green, you are following another canopy. Red for STOP, Green for GO. Life is short ... jump often.

Night Cross Country?
jumpsalot-2 replied to FlyingRhenquest's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Ah, but ........... the ability of another aircraft to differentiate if a distant light is somewhere in the sky or in the distance on the ground may be the fact that it is blinking. The pilot might think, that light is blinking, maybe I should pay attention to it. Life is short ... jump often. -
What I have seen recently is two wheels up front and one in the back ........ same question. Motorcycle or car ? Life is short ... jump often.

Save the in depth learning of the make-up of the engineering of your container until the day after your packing class ..... then learn all you can. You will over load otherwise before your class. that is "my" opinion. The one thing that every beginner packer struggles with while staring into the center of the canopy while it's hanging on their shoulder is how to pull the fabric to the outside, Concentrate on that. On the right side you are going to make three U shapes outward and on the left side you are going to make three U shapes outward. ((( ))) ((( ))) ((( ))) A 7 cell has 3 pieces to pull into the U shape, per U shape. A 9 cell has 4 pieces to pull into the U shape, per U shape. (((( )))) (((( )))) (((( )))) Your instructor will teach you the rest. About doing line checks, placing the slider properly, S folding, putting the slippery mess into the bag, and stowing your lines properly, etc.. If you have a canopy already, trying separating the material as shown above...................keep trying. Then shake it out and do it again and again. All of a sudden you will see what I am showing. Learn this and your packing class will be much easier. Don't jump your first few pack jobs without your instructor's approval. Life is short ... jump often.

For clarification, I believe the seat belt FAR already existed when the Perris incident occurred but belts were not used in practice at most DZ's. FWIW, I believe we will revisit better restraints again someday. Unfortunately it will likely not happen until after another high-profile incident. Let's face it, most aircraft restraint set-ups are not effective. One remedy would be to use 2 single point seat belts for each jumper. One fore and one aft of each jumper at maybe 45 degrees on the outside wall. Then attached to the jumper at the same point around a harness piece then snugged. One side of the jumper would still move back and forth but one side should remain stationary. Color coding the belt pairs would help to identify pairs. Dual pairs would become difficult near the door. The jumper would need to be away by half a spot. Life is short ... jump often.

Are you setting up by climbing outside first into a prone position, or just stepping out into the relative wind ? I prefer just stepping out into the wind ( King Air / Otter ) ..... never jumping up of course. What type of plane do you jump from by the way ? Life is short ... jump often.
