  1. There are a few ways it can be mounted -- I have an L-shaped bracket that attaches to the mud-flap using a Velcro loop: [inline 306838_10151244555184658_229018460_n.jpg] Here is the one I use: http://www.chutingstar.com/gear/altimount [inline 548325_10151023177319658_1923351406_n.jpg]
  2. I had a similar experience when I had less than 50 jumps. I was at my first boogie, first time jumping at a different DZ. On only my third jump I had a hard opening followed by a single broken brake line. I decided to chop, as I had not landed on rears before. I also got mixed feedback and I second guessed myself. That evening I thought that if I had to, I probably could have landed on rears just fine. But in the moment, I wasn't sure. So I chopped and I feel like it was the right decision for me then. Deciding to chop is a personal decision. If you look up and you don't like what you see, then you make that decision for yourself. It doesn't matter if someone else would have done it differently, because someone else wasn't sitting in that harness at the time. You were, and if your canopy is not 100% you have another one in your rig that is 100%. If you work on your canopy skills including not only landing on your rears but also flying your pattern, then you will be better prepared for the future if you happen to find yourself in similar circumstances again.
  3. I haven't found it anywhere so I'm pretty sure there are no rss feeds for dz.com forums but on the off chance that there are can anyone point me to them?

  6. http://www.mercurynews.com/sports/ci_23803083/escape-artist-faces-coffin-skydive-at-14-500 whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaat is this? I know times were different back then but you can't tell me a coffin skydive was part of the license progression
  7. This. Entirely out of context. And that is where the quote came from, I saw the why we jump clip recirculating in my facebook feed again this morning.
  8. When you're in the Seattle area, you should call the tunnel ahead of time and see if they have any jumper specials going on. Sometimes they have better rates for jumpers during certain hours or certain days of the week. It is subject to change, though: skydive@iflyseattle.com or 206 456 8609 If you're looking for basic belly flying I know several coaches that are excellent for establishing good belly flying habits early on. Also if you're on facebook, there is a group local and visiting flyers use to share time or learn about visiting coaches and stuff. PM me if you want more info on that
  9. The fatal flaw in your argument is you are basing it all on the "fact" that a hop and pop is more dengerous. Your arguments are all valid logically speaking if you first accept that there is an increased danger. But there is not. A hop and pop is NO MORE dangerous than a skydive initiated from a higher altitude. If you FEEL like it is then you have a big hole in your skydiving toolbox. Maybe taking a few days and doing nothing but hop and pops would do you some good in that you can get over the unfounded fear. Respectfully, this is such a basic skill I'm surprised after all that has been said you are still maintaining your original position that it should be treated as if it was actually dangerous.
  10. I learned on static line so my first ten or whatever jumps were all hop and pops. When you learn that way, hop and pops are not scary at all. In my personal opinion, if you can't exit a plane stable, then you have no business having a license at all. Exiting a plane stable is a basic skill, not an advanced skill. Regardless of altitude. Additionally, performing a clear and pull from a low altitude is good for student jumpers because they can focus only on the canopy flight portion of the skydive. Especially with students, limiting their cognitive load to only a few tasks is actually putting them under less pressure. By eliminating the free fall portion of the jump their brain only needs to focus on a short exit sequence and then it's all canopy flight. Exit, arch, reach, pull, check your canopy. That's your skydive. From there, you have the whole airspace to yourself (if you're on a solo H&P pass) so you can take your time to plan your pattern and adjust for accuracy without the added stress of other canopies. If you don't think that you can get from exit to check your canopy within 10-15 seconds, then some additional training is probably necessary. Honestly, that AFF jumpers are so afraid of a hop and pop that they consider it dangerous and think it should be limited to C or D license holders is a big indicator that if anything MORE hop and pops should be required before getting your A. The plane emergency issue is real, but to me, a hop and pop is a much more fundamental skill.
  11. or you have short brake lines on the sabre 2 and the safire 2 are too long...
  12. Does anyone know if there are any DZs on the west coast that have Stearman biplanes that you can jump? Even if only for a boogie weekend or something? Edited to add: it looks like one was in Eloy in '08? http://www.dropzone.com/videos/Special_Jumps/Skydive_from_a_Stearman_Biplane_Eloy_Arizona_450.html
  13. Good stuff, that gives me a great place to start my convo with my rigger. Thanks!
  14. Fair point -- I'll talk to my rigger and see what kind of solution would work well for my rig (mirage). My initial thinking on chest strap was it is centrally located so either a left or right hand would be equidistant. I can see how it could get in the way there, however (especially the benchmade you linked up thread--it is longer). Where do you generally mount you knife(s)?
  15. Makes perfect sense, thanks for the definition. Having a pair of gloves suited to the task would be appropriate in that case
  16. Does the sheath on that benchmade work well or do you need to find a more suitable sheath? I was thinking chest strap placement?
  17. Sorry for the quick interjection/thread drift, but what is short lining? Is that like an instructor PCA...?
  18. You mean people still smoke *tobacco* cigars? To put it bluntly, that is surprising.
  19. I dropped a bomb in the tunnel once sitting on the bench. People flying in the tunnel could smell it. Cool thing about recirc is your fart hits them in the face at 75% and then comes back around and hits them again. You have to admit that's some serious hang time if even two turbine fans can't blow your stench away ;)
  20. Is it possible to filter out all the SFW threads so we can focus on the good stuff? If not file that as a feature request for next release!
  21. If there is any scandal to be found in this incident, this is probably it.
  22. Thanks for sharing that, I was assuming that this type of testing had to be common with tandem system manufacturers. That's really interesting to me. What affect does an oscillating drogue have on the tandem pair? I know that for reserves oscillating pilot chutes are good because it helps to, as I understand it, catch clean air and wiggle the reserve out?
  23. I see Greek. So I will assume that your equation is more accurate than mine As the total mass of the tandem increases, would the fall rate change at a constant rate or would there be a bend in that graph?
  24. What piqued my interest was talking with some TIs about fall rates and how floaty a light TI + light passenger is. The more I thought about it the more I wondered... well exactly HOW floaty? Can you put a number on it? etc. Check that other thread for dating advice, I've got nothing for ya--I'm a family man. If you want advice on how to child proof your studio apartment (you can't, move into a bigger place) or what car seat works best in a hatchback (there aren't any, buy a bigger car), I'm your man. Edited to add: upon further reflection, here is some dating advice--if you need to ADD weight to keep up with your date you're doing it wrong if you need camera wings to slow down, you're on the right track
