I expect that there will be some reasonably official clarification of this matter in the next day or two. HW

The FAA has released it. See attachment. Note that (contrary to earlier info), it will take effect 30 days, not 90 days, following its publication in the Federal Register. So if it's published tomorrow (Wednesday) it would take effect Dec. 19 (if my calendar counting is correct, which it might not be.) The rule document is interesting reading. HW

Charlie Pierce is a very good writer. He writes eloquently on everything from urban poverty to Tom Brady and the Patriots. Sometime he's very funny. In my emails with Skwrl, I said only that I hoped humor-impaired skydivers would not feel it necessary to write responses of the "you're a fat commie and you don't have the cojones..." sort. (It was, of course, not necessary to suggest that to Sqwrl, who understands the term "ad hominem".) Probably we would not be having this discussion if I hadn't scanned the Globe magazine and seen "Dear Justin Shorb" leap out at me. HW

USPA has posted on its web site information that the FAA will publish the new rule for the 180-day repack cycle in the Federal Register this week, to take effect 90 days after publication. That would make it take effect sometime around Feb. 17-19, 2009 (just after the PIA Symposium and USPA Board meetings in Reno.) As the USPA bulletin notes, the rule change results from a joint effort by USPA and PIA. HW

Err, I already posted that the pix are dated Sept. 86. Hw

OK, I know who this is and who took the picture where, and roughly when, but I don't know the story behind it. Anybody? HW

No question Smitty was a pioneer (as well as a character.) I met him several times at boogies, and have a couple of his pamphlets, autographed. But though he (and Tiny Broadwick) were warmly embraced by the sport skydiving community, I don't think he would have considered himself a sport jumper. HW

Here's a decal from PI. The design is kinda similar to the skydivers on the National Skydiving Museum logo. HW
-
Possibly, if you don't count freefall activity as a component of "sport jumping," as suggested by the original poster. No. I discussed this with him a few months ago. He had talked in the mid-fifties with another person (who has been credited with coining the term) about using it but considered it "too acrobatic" for the activity he was starting to promote -- he preferred "sport parachuting." Much later he registered the term "The Skydiver." (see ® mark on the attached bumper sticker.) HW

Gaah... where to begin? When did something else (a barnstorming stunt, a combat jump, a test jump of an bailout rig) turn into a "sport jump?" Were the thousands of young Russians doing training jumps in the 1930s doing it for "sport," or training for combat? My off-the-top-of-my-head answer is that somewhere in central Europe in the late 40s or early 50s some people decided that since they were jumping out of airplanes anyway, they might as well call it a sport. In any event, I wouldn't call Tiny Broadwick a sport jumper. So the next question is: "Who invented the term "skydiving?" HW

Here's a nice C-130 shot from the cover of the Dutch Sport Parachutist magazine (Jan. 2005). Photo by Leo de Bruin. (As my Dutch is somewhat limited, I won't attempt to provide more info about when and where.) HW

Hmm, I just looked at the back of the prints. They're dated Sept. 1986. HW

A news story here. And another here. Check out the 10 pix in the slideshow. Looks like the Brit papers love this story HW

I hadn't thought of a WFFC because Dick was probably not an active skydiver at the time of these pictures. Was there something there -- some record attempt, maybe -- where he might have been a judge? HW
-
This time, I don't know. These are from a huge box of mostly unlabeled pictures from the late Dick Barber, who was a frequent judge at Nationals and other big meets. So I'm kind of guessing they're at a Nationals, but I don't know where or when. But certainly some of the planes are very familiar. HW

User name: rickerby. Total of 48 posts. Rigs with original Rickerby pilot-chute caps are treasures (though probably not many of them are still jumped regularly.) How sad. HW

Mine has ~250 jumps on it and my doctor knows. HW

The next Pioneers of Sport Parachuting reunion will be held in May, 2009, in Raeford/Fayetteville. Attractions include some free jumps and tunnel time, along with food, drink, and the usual collection of jump stories. Most of the last reunions have been held in the west, so it's time to move back east to be able to include new folks. Details available at the new reunions website or the PIA "low numbers" website. I have a bunch of additional pictures of the June, 2008, Salt Lake City reunion courtesy of DSE, and will be putting them on the PIA site soon. HW

Well, those of us in the frozen northeast are glad to have VPJr, Emiko, 121PM and the two white 206s. All will be wintering in Massachusetts/New Hampshire. Here's the newly-painted tool truck with the proud owner. HW -

Massachusetts this weekend?

Both Jumptown (Orange) and Pepperell have freefly types who could probably be persuaded to jump with you. Why not try Jumptown Sunday and Pepperell Monday? (Jumptown's not open Monday.) The weather is pretty bad now but it looks like Sunday will be clearing. HW -
Jumptown may be open occasionally if the weather is good. Pepperell will have at least one Cessna 206 available all winter and plans to open on good weekend jump days. And, as noted elsewhere, Connecticut Parachutists Inc. (CPI) will be open with a Cessna 182 weekends. You should get yourself on the local "Banter" email lists for late-breaking info on who's open when. HW
