  1. I did my first jump on a 260 from then on I was usually jumping a 240 Navigator through the rest of AFF until I got my own rig. I was 225 naked at the time. Never knew any better at the time.
  2. I have been jumping at Sky's the Limit for the whole summer and only had one day when they were flying the Sky Van. they do fly it when it is there but I think they rent it out a lot. I'd give them a call to see if it's around before heading up there.
  3. Being towed up, thinking that the chest strap will break if he gets into a lock up situation. It seems like it would be much safer to launch from a slope, but of course not so convenient if a suitable hill is not available. Exactly this. It's not the building of the canopy that that worries me, I too am fairly impressed by the progress he has made. but the testing methods. Doing things that are known to be unsafe and not taking enough time to make sure you are being as safe as possible.
  4. I am on the edge of my seat. This just screams bad idea.
  5. This is exactly what I was going to say. 5.samadhi, you are saying the buyer should have the right to buy what they want but why shouldn't the seller have the right to not sell to somebody they don't want to sell to. What about the personal autonomy of the seller? Why should the buyers need trump the sellers? The seller has a role in this transaction and has all the right to decide it is a transaction she doesn't want to be involved in. Your argument would carry weight if there was a third party stepping in to prevent the transaction.
  6. If you are concerned can't you just take it out for the jump?
  7. I would say "no". But the loose fit to your back means the container is going to wiggle around a bit behind you, which can make precision flying a little more difficult, because of the constantly shifting weight. I always find it a little distracting to fly up behind someone in a formation and to watch a rig dancing around on someone's back. And it could shift enough to make it pretty hard to find your hackey. And makes it easier to fall out The hackey or the skydiver?
  8. My experiences have been on par or better than other industries.
  9. I am going to ignore your question and talk about something else. Look at Brian Germain's chart for downsizing. http://www.bigairsportz.com/pdf/bas-sizingchart.pdf At your size (which also happens to be my size) he recommends a 230, unless you instructors disagree this would be a better place to start looking and you should find a lot more options. The reasoning is that at large sizes, canopies are more docile and thus you can increase your wing loading above the recommended 1.0 as long as you go with a more docile beginner canopy (like a Pilot). And why wait to buy a rig. I'd start looking at secondhand stuff now and buy pieces as they become available.
  10. Where are you going to do your AFF? Some place will do the first three jumps as tandems instead of jumping with two instructors for the first three jumps. Then jump 4 onwards will be the same (one instructor).
  11. I think you are supposed to look like this.
  12. You would of hoped so but it seems not http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-tayside-central-15521221 http://www.dailyrecord.co.uk/...ourt-86908-23529702/ Is it the same guy. That's crazy.
  13. I really am glad you will recover. I had a friend who wasn't as lucky. Similar story to you but he wasn't quite as cocky. Unfortunately I don't think he had as many people looking out for him as you did and he was flying a crossfire with a wing-loading over 1.5. The problem is nobody was actively telling him to slow down (at least not as far as I saw) and at around 500 jumps he fucked up a swoop, injured his C5 and is now paralyzed from the chest down. His problem was he was always the guy who picked u things quicker than anybody else. Best Climber/ Snowboarder ect in our group. So when he was progressing faster than others nobody said anything. Not sure if it would have matterd but I wish I hadknown more as I would have said something. VB saved you. and you got lucky by a few feet. Lots to consider. Hope the healing goes well. Keeps us updated, you are very famous now.
  14. Thanks for posting. Would love to hear more details about the day, injuries ect. Glad you're gonna be okay.
  15. What you are wearing helps too. I once jumped a student rig wearing sweat pants on a hop and pop. Hurt like hell the whole way down, never experienced that kind of uncomfortableness wearing a jump suit. I am a big guy and on many of the student rigs I jumped the padding on the leg straps didn't really reach around my thigs well but some were fine. This often made then ride a little uncomfortable but I only experienced the above pain once. Something does seem wrong maybe with the way you are sitting, either while flying or during deployment.
  16. This was posted in the Sangi Incidents thread and seemed appropriate for this discussion. http://people.psych.cornell.edu/~dunning/publications/pdf/unskilledandunaware.pdf
  17. try looking for circle of awareness.
  18. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zVwxkMyrQ5c Here is my first hop n pop. I threw in a few barrel rolls 'cause I have mad skillz and had a few extra feet of altitude (we were at 5000).
  19. That's interesting. That's what happens when you get you information from Wikipedia. Thanks for the correction.
  20. '(USPA) requires in the Skydivers Information Manual that any jumper flying a wingsuit for the first time have a minimum of 200 freefall skydives, made within the past 18 months, and receive one-on-one instruction from an experienced wing suit jumper, or 500 jumps experience to go without an instructor.' Ultimately to get to start wing suit jumps you need to be doing on average 12 jumps a month (that 2-3 days or jumping). If you are working and only really jumping on weekends you will need a DZ close by that you can get to almost every weekend there is good weather. Your goals are long term so your choice of dz should be based on long term goals not short term ones
  21. My Friend lost his iPhone on a Jump. It would ring when you called in but we never managed to find it.
  22. When you are ready to move off the 260, you could also try another DZ. There are quite a few in your area. One of them probably has a nice NAV 220. Phone around.
  23. I am no expert but will have a go based on what I paid from my rig last year but really your best best is to look what others are selling similar gear for in the classifieds. These are all pretty common components so it shouldn't be too hard to find a buyer. Container - 1200 to 1600 Main - 1100 to 1300 Reserve - 800 to 900. Cypress about 950 (this can be priced via the cypress website). total value - 4000 to 5000. I'll give you $3000 for the lot.
  24. To me the obvious choice for this has always been to try land on a hill with snow. Speed skiers travel at speeds of over 125MPH, so there seems to be a solution there. Figuring out how to transition to a belly ride on the snow would be tough but probably easier than building a ramp. These guys look like they could touch down and maybe survive. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B8ZZ0Lra4kc
