  1. Marriage statutes can be argued on contract law, IMHO. Equal opportunity to enter business contracts. Government definition of marriage legitimacy has not stood on sexual consummation as a legal requirement in at least the last half century, as I recall. That's only a consideration of religious doctrine and the standing of a marriage in the eyes of church establishments. Nor does government restrict access to the civil marriage contract to those who cannot have, or choose not to have children. Therefore, they can't restrict access to this civil contract arrangement based on the genders of the two consenting adults. At least, that's how I would argue it.
  2. Alito has stated recently that it is an issue that needs to be legislated. Okay -- we need to have a massive overhaul of the US Congress so that the proposed legislation to codify the essence of Roe gets voted on and passed. Federal law would supersede any of these horrible state restrictions, and we could stop having this nonsense discussion. Edited to add: and when I say "overhaul," I mean everyone get out and vote for congressional candidates who would support bodily autonomy.
  3. FIFY (I've signed the same one many times)
  4. I don't know how true this is, but at least you can find the post on Twitter. If it really was a letter penned by a couple of teachers, bravo to them: https://www.huffpost.com/entry/dont-say-gay-he-she-sabotage-teacher-letter-moms-for-liberty-florida_n_62489f02e4b0587dee6a3a1a

    BLM

This story should generate about as much outrage as the report about church leaders (plural) living lives of luxury in their multiple residences, high-end cars, private planes (that in some cases aren't big enough and "the lord" wants them to have larger/newer/better). How many people donate to these pyramid schemes every day?
  6. Also funny that Jones went on his show immediately after his deposition and gave his version of how things went, yet petitioned to have the deposition deemed private (not releasable). So he can publicly accuse the legal team of unprofessional behavior, yet thinks he can suppress the tools for the lawyers to correct the narrative. Glad to see that isn't going to fly.
  7. And why would it be relevant in questioning KJB or any other candidate for Justice? I'm glad I waited to respond to the replies to my post three pages ago. Thanks for having my back, friends. This was exactly my point (just catching up)
  8. yes, I know. Which is why that's my point. Marsha Blackburn's question during a Senate committee hearing over whether Judge Jackson is qualified for the SC is not in line with the job. Want to ask a question about ethics, experience, legal matters? Okay. I'm not a lawyer, so maybe I just don't see how this is an appropriate interview question for this particular job. I'll even concede that the questions over her judicial record -- however misleading and based on faulty premise -- are within bounds.
  9. I think we're really all missing the point, though. What do these definitions have to do with the role of a Supreme Court Justice? We already have amended the Constitution to state that everyone, regardless of race, religion, sex, etc., enjoys the same rights in this country. Isn't that enough for a SC Justice to be able to render a decision?
  10. Reading this I was reminded of the retired woman at the congressional town hall who said afterward it was the first she had ever heard that the Mueller Report contained negative findings against Trump. (The member of Congress escapes my recall, but it was a moderate Republican)
  11. I can follow that. The majority of the former POTUS's ramblings, OTOH, not so much.
  12. You are correct about the criticism bit, and I apologize. I mis-addressed the comment to you, when it should have been directed to BigFalls, who first implied the ramblings of a teenager were actually comments by the VP.
  13. I have no problem with someone criticizing an elected leader for a mistake. I do have a problem with relating her to an ill-educated teenage pageant contestant (or some of the worse comparisons and criticisms referenced in this thread). And if you're so hung up on elected leaders not speaking in a serious manner, please refer me to all of your criticisms of the previous administration. Because... damn.
  14. Oh yes, I know all that. Having been in that position for roughly 32 years (my military career), my problems are that 1) no one called him out for it (so I needed to do so), and 2) this nonsense still happens to educated, powerful women in this country (I'm sure it also happens in many of the other countries whose citizens participate on this forum, but as so-called world leadership goes, some of us still don't live that example). It's disgusting and I refuse to let it slide.
  15. It seems that politicians like to talk and they keep on talking even when they have nothing to say and end up saying things that make no sense. They don't seem to know when to stop talking. Since I can't tell if Bigfalls is kidding (tone does not come through on a post), and no one else is addressing this, I feel the need to speak up. Brent, please do stop. Seriously? Putting the words of a TEENAGED BEAUTY CONTESTANT into the mouth of Vice President of the United States? Wow.
  16. 12-ish years ago -- the last time gas prices went through the roof -- Tampa talked about a train system. Unfortunately gas prices came down before anything could really be approved, so the project was shelved. I was hoping they would think ahead, to the development planned in the outer suburbs and any future fuel increases (so that by the time issues arose, the trains would already be running). Alas, we have entered this round of gas hikes in the same state of affairs as we found ourselves then.

Check out the 2014 NDAA -- specifically the European Deterrence Initiative (EDI). We re-allocated a ton of money to security cooperation build-up to the eastern flank of NATO. It's been going on now for nearly eight years, and has shown significant growth in partner development programs. Its success inspired the corresponding Pacific Deterrence Initiative written into the 2020 NDAA. That one has yet to be funded, as we have had other emerging requirements in the meantime, but Congress has recognized the need for longer-term cooperation and development programs so our regional partners and allies can do the job themselves, with out relying on the major powers to come to the rescue in a crisis.
  18. I just had my retirement request approved. Come Dec 1, I'll be joining the club!
  19. 1) FIFY (I presume you were going for the binary options) 2) non-sequitur. That wasn't the basis of your statement, nor of my response.
  20. She was tested for President and the results came back negative. Actually, the results were quite positive. More Americans voted for her than for her opponent.
  21. I spent three years in Turkey, so I see where you're going with that. Kas is just a short (yet winding) drive west along the coast -- great diving, sleepy seaside town. However, as having worked with the government there -- it was difficult then, and is much worse now. You're going to have issues with internet and having your communications monitored. On the other hand, those coastal Mediterranean areas of Turkey are absolutely enticing! I thoroughly enjoyed it. Might I recommend the South Pacific? Especially some of those small island nations that have direct flights to at least two developed nations (like Japan, Singapore, New Zealand, Australia). Consider Guam, Micronesia, Samoa -- all US territories or protectorates if you want something familiar. Philippines is popular -- your retirement dollars go far there. I also hear great things about Cook Islands.
  22. Not anymore, since she has now been issued a subpoena. She’ll need her own lawyer now.
  23. To continue this topic — Bill Clinton had the magnetic personality, but would never have gotten to the levels he did without Hillary’s counsel and guidance. If anything, he rode her coattails.

    covid-19

Trump only had COVID to deal with for 9 months of his administration, and no Delta variant. People wore masks and observed lockdowns (schools, public events, theme parks). Biden has been in office for 10 months, with Delta, more in-person learning, a lot more travel opportunities -- and fewer deaths during that time. Even with the conspiracy nuts refusing to be vaccinated or protecting their fellow citizens by keeping their germs to themselves, Biden is still doing better than Trump did.
  25. I'm going to disagree with that simple assessment. If deficit caused inflation, we would have already seen massive inflation during the previous administration. These spending proposals have nothing on the tax cuts (causing severe deficit) from the previous administration.
