    I think it is a wise move to change dz. First off, for most of us skydiving is a substantial investment and being short changed through lack of attention is poor customer service. We can't always have our preferred instructor, but they SHOULD give you proper time and attention. Secondly I believe it makes unsafe jumpers. Getting your A license is only partly about jumps. A significant amount of ground schooling should be involved and the type of environment you describe makes that virtually impossible. It is good practice to dirt dive jumps, that should start during AFF and stay with you forever. Having instructors rush and grab you just prior to boarding sets a bad example, and results in the kind of jumps that go wrong.     I let it turn off by itself. I can't be bothered to have to use the manual every time I turn it off. The only way I have successfully turned it off is sitting with the manual open and following the steps. Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.

    Australian rules are different, in my opinion it is the best system I've seen. To pack student, rental or tandem gear you need a 'packed b' rating that lasts for 2 years. A person with an A license can pack their personal gear or that of any licensed jumper). However I disagree with milehigh - pretty sure that he could pack under the direct supervision of a suitable person.     If you know how (and you did it for your A so you do) then it comes down to practice and self confidence. Just take your time and practice. If you are very nervous get an instructor to check you packing next time you are at the dz. I struggle with confidence in my pack jobs.     It depends how you define sport. Yes equipment, access and understanding has grown with tandems. Although funnily it still isn't mainstream enough for insurance policies to still hold us at arms length. But I feel the close knit, club atmosphere has been lost. I have fond memories of kicking a hackey sack around waiting for a load to turn in a crappy old aircraft. 20 years on I still have friends from my first club. The dz was a club and strong friendships grew. Personally I'm still very happy to jump into a 182 (in fact my last few jumps have all been 182's).     get away for the weekend and use the two hundred bucks you would spend on the tandem on some lingerie instead and make him happy. when it's your birthday, tell him you want to strap yourself to another dude and jump out of the plane. he can pay for that, and can't complain, because he got what he wanted on his bday sounds to me like you're the one who wants to skydive anyway, so win win.     Strop, in one respect quads is right. Earlier this year the USPA rules were changed such that tandems must comply with the manufacturers age requirements unless specifically wavered. Where I strongly disagree with quade is that he alleges a 16 year old jumping is unsafe. We all know that the rule is there for legal reasons only. I wasn't aware that Mike's dz is not a group member. That just goes to show what a farce USPA memberships can be. It seems that BOD members don't put much stock in USPA membership. However I agree with quads that dz's who choose not to be members of a national body have a reason to do so. If the reason is financial, then what other shortcuts are taken? Generally industry membership helps with sales and removes the fear factor that can otherwise be spread. The only valid reason I can think of is that USPA rules and validation are seen to be a complete joke and not worth the effort. A friend is a TI and he took his 12 year old for his 10000th jump. A boy in my kids class was in the papers for being the youngest jumper in WA at 10 or 11 years old (tandem student). As the article says kids of 12 are doing extreme sports on their own, so a tandem is not a huge deal. Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.

    Quade, the 2 aren't related. Yes I would agree that most non-affiliated dz's need to be assessed carefully. However the age limit has nothing to do with safety. If it did then like the BPA there would be an upper age limit as well. It has everything to do with the US legal system. As squeak said, most of the world it is 16.     For some. I couldn't care less if everybody and their granny skydives, as long as I get to keep doing it. I don't do it because it's dangerous. I sure as hell don't do it because it makes me some kind of elite. I do it because it's difficult, and beautiful, and because the people I love do it with me. I voted 'perfectly safe', so they could keep doing it with me until we all die of old age. Spot on

    Yes I would. People look at me like I am from a different planet when I say I do skydiving for the 'human flight' and not the thrills. Living on a coastal area, where lots of people have experienced scuba diving, I tell them that it is apparently very similar (a perception of weightlessness, and a 3D playground). Most of them seem to get that. But then there is a part of me that relishes the fact that everytime I jump, I conquer very real fears.
