  1. Thanks Rob! Now, if anyone wants to buy a Classic II in the same size, I might be interested in selling mine. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
  2. I just read your profile, and you, SkyDaemon, earn 50 bonus geek points just for your name. How's Caramon? -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
  3. I am trying to improve my max track. Does anyone know where I can get coaching on flat out, maxed, full speed tracking? Do you think it's better to look for coaching from freefly coaches or RW coaches on max tracks? I have a good handle on the theory, and have done lots of practice on my own (and with friends who have cameras). Now I'm looking for a recommendation for quality professional coaching. Anyone have any ideas? -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

  5. I'm so with you. I have used several different motorcross and ski helmets on parachute jumps (mostly with very hard openings). In my experience, the "can't look at the canopy" business is not true. I've never had trouble with the extra weight either. The best helmets I've seen are the ones used by skiers or skeleton (that's the headfirst sled event) riders. They're low drag, full face, and offer much better protection than skydiving helmets. I also like the motocross helmets I've used, except that they tend to create weird drag at terminal, and also have too many snag point for my personal comfort. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

  7. I've gotten two from them in the last 3 hours. Maybe a once in a while boogie announcement (especially from a DZ somewhere near me) is ok. But this business is ridiculous. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
  8. Myself: Zippo (not counting the medical scars I've acquired parachuting). Most skydivers: Way more than average. I hypothesize that our natural conformity and dullness makes us seek a way to prove that we aren't as boring as we seem. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
  9. Hey, that guy is one of my friends (and a heck of a nice guy, to boot). Ground Whuffo: "Whuffo you jump out of them planes?" Skydiving Whuffo: "Whuffo you do that stunt/jump off them cliffs/go head down?" Skydiver: "Why not?" -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
  10. Devil's Tower has been jumped. Unfortunately, jumping Devil's Tower is illegal (to the tune of gear confiscation, $2500 fine, and a night or more in jail), so I'm pretty sure that no particular person who can be named has actually done any jumping there (that would be illegal, after all). The jumpers have kind of mutually agreed to follow the voluntary climbing closures (to avoid drawing attention to themselves, as well as to respect the religious beliefs of the indigenous people). If you're going to jump, make sure you are familiar with the climbing rules. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
  11. And that is the real reason that Style chicks are better than either RW or Freefly chicks. Sorry to mix threads, but I couldn't resist. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
  12. This is the weapon that all women can and will use on their guys... Make no mistake males of the world... It can and will happen to you. Any woman who uses sex as a weapon is just asking her guy to get his sex elsewhere. Make no mistake ladies, if you use sex against him, he'll find someone else to get it from. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
  13. My solution to the Graduate School and Jumping Issue: Take a year or three off school. Get a Tandem Rating and a Rigger's Ticket (at least--it will also help if you learn to fly camera and a Cessna). Go back to school. Work at the DZ on weekends. Now, your DZ work will pay for your fun jumps, and probably even generate a little extra income (always helpful while in school). Another choice is just to take up BASE. Then you don't have to pay for your jumps. (Disclaimer: that's a joke--BASE is more expensive than skydiving.) -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
  14. Don't they have 500 and 1000 jump licenses (I think they're called E and F) in Australia? My instructor signed my log book when I was doing static line, and I remember him signing an 'F' license number, and getting really confused about what that was. Turned out, that funny accent wasn't a speech impediment after all. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
  15. I thought you had to turn 6 points on a 9 way... "What do you get when you multiply six by nine?" -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
  16. iPod's rock! "Oh, a compact disc. How quaint..." Plus Quade's music selection almost matches my iPod. Except I've got a pretty damn big Beatles section, and a totally complete Jimmy Buffett section. Oh, yeah, and lots of country. What's wrong with you people? No country music? -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
  17. Take up BASE. One parachute. No girlfriend. More than two drinks. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
  18. I've got about as many night jumps as day jumps (in my peculiar parachuting discipline, that's often necessary). I think that the night jump requirement for a D license is a good idea. It's important to prepare people for situations they may find themselves in (emergency or otherwise) at some point in their parachuting career. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
  19. Naproxen Sodium (aleve), as well as many other popular anti-inflammatories, have been reported to delay bone growth and healing. So, if you have a broken bone, it's probably a bad choice. Read the article in the New England Journal of Medicine. 20. Not a flame! Not a flame! I just wanted to point out that BASE PC's are virtually all ZP, in case anyone reading this isn't familiar with that. There are a lot of misconceptions about BASE gear floating around the skydiving world, and I'm trying to do my part to stop them. Thanks for the info, Dan. I'll do some tow tests this week and see what I can observe personally. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
  21. Hey Dan, Can you elaborate on your PC oscillation tests? You results are in total contradiction to tests performed by Consolidated Rigging and Basic Research, both of whom now manufacture apex vented pilot chutes, specifically to combat the oscillation which you did not observe. This oscillation is very well documented on BASE deployments, on delays from 0-terminal. I'm curious as to why your tests didn't reveal it. Could it have something to do with PC size? Bridle length? Maybe deployment method? Anyway, if you could give me any information about your tests, I would really appreciate the data. Thanks, -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
  22. Either: Carhart work pants with double knees, long sleeve shirt, full body motorcycle armor, and paragliding boots, or; T-shirt, shorts and a Birdman Classic II (navy with white wings)--but I'm hoping to get my new Skyflyer next week. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

Um, I did know that. Darn internet. It's so hard to convey sarcasm, humor, etc. Sorry for the misunderstanding. I'll try to use smileys more often to show when I'm joking, sarcastic, or whatever. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

    Query

It must be my weak constitution, then. I seem to be totally lacking in guilt feelings for anything that doesn't hurt someone else. I'm pretty sure it's not a guilty conscience. Haven't you ever been so stoned, for so long, you just wanted to come down? Or been so drunk you just needed to stop and go to bed? I think it's mostly about physical or mental exhaustion. Too much of anything and eventually I just need to stop and do something else for a while. Look at it this way. Backing off of something for a while makes it all the more rewarding when you get back to it. Never backing off makes the reward continuously diminish until it's just no fun anymore. What if you were banished to a strange foreign land where there was no skydiving? I bet your first 100 jumps back would be a whole lot more fun than the corresponding 100 jumps if you had been jumping all along. It's late. I'm rambling. I'm just sure it's not guilt. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

    Query

Too much of anything can make it not so good anymore. I've had too much of lots of good things--drugs, alcohol, sex, skydiving (yes, I know that's sacrilege around here), love. Everything in moderation (especially, on occasion, moderation itself). "Like candy, emotion, too much and sugar can turn to sand." -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
