When I was in college we had a similar case. A local woman showed up at the police station with some bruises, saying she had been raped by a gang of teen age boys on skateboards. Turned out she had fallen off her bike, and made the whole thing up. She sure got lots of attention from local feminist organizations--at least until the truth came out. After that, they were oddly silent about the whole thing. I'm thinking "cry for attention". It's a case of "I've got no life--what can I do to get attention?" Just going out and doing something interesting and/or fun would probably work better. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

Where in Alabama? Mobile was apparently beautiful today... -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

It could be. I think that many of the same folks who have stuff on offheading.com were involved in shooting that film. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

The wingsuit clip you're thinking of is probably Fastest Motherfucker in the Valley which is from the same exit. You can see how much further the wingsuit flies than the track. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

He was not. Not even tracking pants, as far as I know. You can see his hand reach up at the end, it clearly doesn't have a wing attached to it. Also, wingsuit flights at that site generally go out past the two meadows you see from the exit. Various other tracking attire has pushed people as far as the meadows, but good wingsuit pilots have to file flight plans off that cliff--out to the river, then left along the river to the bridge, then right and back to the road.... -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

I disagree. I believe that some things can happen without sentient input. Sometimes, random, unplanned things just happen. No one meant for them to happen, no one made them happen. They just happened. That, after all, is the meaning of the second half of "Blue Skies, Black Death." -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

What is it? I read through the SCR web page, and I still don't get it. What, actually, are the requirements for the SCR? -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

Have you considered searching gear and rigging? It's been my general experience that a smaller slider yields faster openings, but I don't think I'd be willing to apply that to every canopy without hearing from someone who has more experience switching them. I've only played with changing slider size on one old PD-235 7 cell--never on a BASE canopy. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

You got me. I've fixed it up now. Good thing you're here to keep me on my toes. Maybe I ought to deputize you into the site naming police. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

I met one of the skydivers from my home DZ at my 10 year high school reunion. The weird thing was, I knew him from the DZ. And I remembered him from high school. But neither one of us made the connection until the reunion. I just had two separate "people" in my brain, for what actually turned out to be the same person. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

Yep. I think human nature was responsible for those things, and similar things can, and would have, happened in an Atheist, Muslim or Hindu society. How high is that rickety bridge? Can I jump off it? -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

It's interesting to note that the Koran _was_ written in Arabic. It was apparently handed down by Allah in Arabic, thus providing evidence that, in fact, Arabic is the language of the divine. This is the reason that many Muslims study Arabic (to read the Koran in Allah's own words), and has also been used as a justification for wars of conquest (to spread the Arabic language, and hence Allah's own words in his own language). -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

For those of you who only visit this forum, and may have missed the recent changes at DZ.com in general: Sangiro has enacted a new set of Forum Rules and Policies. Please take a minute and read over them. Their are some major changes to both the forum rules and the structure of the other forums. While I won't go into them in depth here, I did want to point out a few that may effect this forum: This means that BASE events and expeditions are welcome to post notices here. Please try not to abuse this privilege by posting "come on my trip" threads that don't include much information. I'd love to see trips, classes and seminars posted, with as much description as you can give us. So, be sure you say what you meant to say. For my part, I'll refrain from splitting threads (which may take people out of context) without the permission of the poster. In general, I'll leave in posts saying "I think the moderator unfairly changed my meaning, here's what I meant," in the same thread. I'll remove posts that start a new thread on this topic, or that fail to explain your complaint. I'll also remove complaints about moderation that are made without reference to a specific moderator action. I'd prefer that everyone just PM me directly if you have a complaint about moderation, so that we can try to resolve it. This is an enumeration of the pedophilia policy. I mention it because I recently edited a post that included a valid (in my eyes) comment about child molestation charges filed against an NPS official who was a leading anti-BASE crusader. Under the new rules, I would not have made that edit. So go read the whole thing. Please. Thanks! -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

I do not recommend changing slider size from the manufacturers spec unless you are willing to take the risk of being a test jumper. Move to a small hole mesh (marquisette) slider. BR can easily send you one if you give them a call. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

There's a whole lifetime of BASE in that short post. I hope sometime in the next 30 years I can catch up with even a fraction of that. For the benefit of our other readers... Um, would that "Smitty" be BASE #1? And I'm guessing that "Carl" is better known to most of us as Carl Boenish, father of modern BASE. That's ground crew going above and beyond. You rule, Joy. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

Check out Track or Die on Offheading.com. There also used to be an insane track (something approaching 45 degrees from exit to landing) on AtleDahl.com, but I'm not sure where it's gone to. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com -
Also happening on Macintosh with IE or Safari. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

The electrical tape rule I learned was 2 wraps under the bridle (on the object), then the bridle, then 3-5 wraps above it. I've seen a huge number of things used as break cord alternatives: electrical tape, plastic bags, condoms--you name it and it's been tried. I like the fishing line idea. Break cord itself is cheap and easy to carry, too. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

In general, I've found that the more experienced a BASE jumper is, the more likely they are to feel that BASE and skydiving are relatively unrelated. There are other things that effect those feelings (notably average exit altitude), but I think that BASE experience is the biggest one. I'm not trying to say that all experienced/inexperienced BASE jumpers think this or that. Just making an observation about the general trends I've seen in the last 5 years. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

Uh, oh. She's going to have to slug it out with Joy, who officially claims Ground Crew #1. It's even in her email address (jhgc1@ means 'Joy H., Ground Crew #1). -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
